MASS TIMES & INTENTIONS Sunday 18 th January Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Peace Day) The Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity 18 th 25 th January 9.30am Jenny Brown RIP 11.15am People of Parish 6pm Anne Henaghan - Ints Monday 19 th January 10am Mass @ Nazareth House Tuesday 20 th January 10am Mass @ Nazareth House Wednesday 21 st January St Agnes 10am Mass @ Nazareth House Thursday 22 nd January 10am Mass @ Nazareth House Friday 23 rd January 10am Mass @ Nazareth House 1-4pm Exposition in Adoration Chapel including 3pm Divine Mercy Prayers Saturday 24 th January St Francis de Sales 10am Mass @ Nazareth House No Confessions Sunday 25 th January Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 9.30am Anna & John (Thanksgiving) 11.15am Dermot Gallagher RIP 1pm Tamil Mass 6pm Parish Community Reflection for 18th January 2015 By Fr Adrian Graffy The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Peace Day) Gospel reading: John 1:35-42 Other Readings: 1 Samuel 3:3-10, 1 Corinthians 6:13-15, 17-20 Our reading this Sunday is taken from the later verses of the first chapter of John, which is generally read during the Christmas season. These verses cover the early days of the ministry of Jesus. We have a last glimpse of John the Baptist, who heralds Jesus for a second time as ‘the Lamb of God’. Jesus is the one who is to lay down his life like an innocent lamb ‘for the sins of the world’. This is the purpose of his coming into the world, the purpose of the Son of God ‘becoming flesh’ and ‘living among us’. Attention quickly moves away from John the Baptist to the conversation between Jesus and the two disciples. They follow Jesus, but he challenges them with the question ‘what are you seeking?’ This is translated here as ‘what do you want?’ They counter this question with another, ‘where do you live?’ Jesus invites them: ‘Come and see!’ The time they spend with Jesus makes a deep impression on them. Andrew cannot contain his enthusiasm. He is convinced that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. He calls his brother Simon Peter. When Jesus meets Simon Peter, he does not hesitate to enlist him among the disciples and immediately gives him the new name, Cephas, which means Rock. These verses are marked by the enthusiastic response of the first disciples to Jesus and their eagerness to spread the news about him. This eagerness is an echo of the first reading, in which Samuel is called as a boy to be a prophet. When the good news of salvation comes, when the encounter with the word of God arrives, it cannot be contained or suppressed. It is imperative to let others know! ‘What are you seeking?’ What would be your response to Jesus’ question? How often do you invite others to ‘come and see’ something of your life of faith? We pray that, as another year begins, we may meet Jesus with new enthusiasm. Let us have the courage to make Jesus known to others, as the first disciples did.

Our church of Our Lady Help of Christians & St Helen was designed by the architect WJ

Goodman and was built at the cost of £1,700. The Archbishop of Westminster opened

the church in October 1869.

As a listed, Victorian building, regular work needs to be carried out to ensure that the

building remains in good condition all of the time. As long as we keep contributing to the

Building and Restoration Fund, work can be done when needed.

The Fund has been set up to fund essential repairs and maintenance of the fabric of the

buildings. Maintenance forms one of our largest annual expenses with £26,000 spent

over the last 12 months resulting in a need to use our very limited reserves.

Please help us meet our quarterly target of £2,000 that's just over £20 a day and just

over £150 a week. This would help cover the shortfall we need for the year ahead.

The task of keeping our church and its buildings weatherproof and fit for purpose is an

ongoing challenge. With your help we can preserve this lovely ancient building.

Please give generously – Gift Aid envelopes or Letters of Pledge are located in

the box below. Thank you Fr. Joseph Whisstock and Parish Finance Team
