Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, League Challenge Cup Second Round tie against our friends from AFC Blackpool. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. This afternoon sees our attentions turn to the League Challenge Cup, the final cup competition we remain in this term. Tuesday saw us exit the Liverpool Senior Cup at the hands of our landlords Ashton Town 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw which saw us have the better of the chances but fail to have the cutting edge we needed in front of goal and this allied with home stopper Nathan Brabin making some fine stops when we did manage to hit the target including an exceptional stop from Andy Newcombe late in the piece and the lottery of a penalty shoot out saw us come out on the wrong end of things and exiting the competition. One of the positives from Tuesday’s Senior Cup tie was that we looked more solid at the back and we kept our first clean sheet since the FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round win at Daisy Hill on 15th September, some six matches ago. Once we get our goal scoring boots back on and add that much needed bit of composure in front of goal then I am sure that the results will start to turn around. We have now drawn the last three matches (excluding the additional periods/shoot outs) and hopefully we can make the next step and get back to winning ways starting this afternoon. Should the scores be level the end of 90 minutes there will be two 15 minute periods of extra time and if the scores are still level then the tie will be replayed on a date to be advised. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory and a place in the hat for the next round. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . AFC Blackpool was formed in 1947 under the name of Blackpool Metal Mechanics and played at Stanley Park for two years before moving to the current Jepson Way ground. They played in local leagues before taking the step up to join the West Lancashire League. During this period in local league football they won many awards, taking the Division Two title of the Fylde District League in 1950/51 and in Division One were champions twice and runners-up three times in five consecutive years between 1953/54 and 1957/58. Numerous local cup competitions were also won, including the Lancashire Junior Shield in 1957/58, a competition they were to win again in 1960/61.

As the 50's drew to a close, Blackpool Mechanics decided to take the next step up and join the West Lancashire League. They were an almost immediate success, being runners-up in 1959/60 and champions for the next two seasons. Various cups and trophies from local competitions still regularly found their way to Jepson Way. The club then took another step up the football ladder by joining the Lancashire Combination. The jump in standard meant the cups and honours that had poured into the trophy room dried up and it was not until the turn of the decade before many more honours were to come their way. In 1972/73 they won the Lancashire Combination Bridge Shield and in 1974/75 they finished runners-up in the league, just one point behind champions Darwen. They remained a strong team throughout the 70's although towards the end they suffered some poor results. With the advent of the North West Counties League, Blackpool Mechanics were placed in Division Three and in 1985/86 were promoted to Division Two. At the end on 1991/92 they were promoted to Division One, but it was not a happy experience and the club returned to Division Two. After a few seasons of struggle, the club is now financially stable and looking forward to developing the club's potential both on and off the pitch. In the summer of 2005 Blackpool Mechanics FC merged with Lytham St. Annes FC who had just won the West Lancashire League Division One title. Lytham St. Annes resigned from their own league and brought their resources and manpower to Jepson Way in a bid to launch the new look Mechanics in their push up the non-league football pyramid. The club was re-named AFC Blackpool in




May 2008 when Blackpool Mechanics FC and Squires Gate Junior FC got together to form one club. It was decided to mark the start of a new era by re-naming the club and the name 'AFC Blackpool' was chosen. The club leased a further piece of land adjacent to the ground in Jepson Way to accommodate the enlarged club and investment to improve the facilities was begun. The club ground in Jepson Way retains its name 'The Mechanics' to maintain a link with the past. Season 2010/11 saw the club have probably its best season ever. The first team were promoted to the Premier Division as Division 1 champions with a record breaking 28 wins and three draws in 34 league matches. They also reached the semi finals in both the 1st Divison Trophy and the League Cup. There were notable sucesses in the Junior section too with the under 16s doing the league and cup double, the under 10's and 11's winning their respective Divisions and the under 14s also winning promotion. With the club now providing football from under 6 through to open age the future is looking secure.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for today's league challenge cup second round game against AFC Blackpool. Today's game is our 3third home game in seven days! Last sat we drew 2-2 against Alsager Town; a game which saw us leading 2-0 until we conceded two late goals. It was again a bitter pill to swallow after playing so well in the second half. We then moved on to Tuesday and an away game (at Edge Green Street) against Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup. The game finished 0-0 and we bowed out 4-3 on penalties. Again, I thought we controlled most of the game and were unlucky not to win the game in normal time but we need to start converting our chances if we are to progress in these sort of

games. As a team we are looking organised and hard to break down, which is something we have been working really hard on. Now we have to push on and start scoring some goals and winning games. I am a firm believer in if we work hard results will start to go our way and also you need that little bit of luck along the way which at the minute we aren't getting. Today's game will be a tough encounter Blackpool will be looking to bounce back from a 5-0 league defeat at Colne last weekend. I hope everyone enjoys today's game and has a safe journey home. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Challenge Cup 2nd Round game against our visitors from AFC Blackpool. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. It’s been a frustrating week for all concerned as we failed to take the spoils in both our games. Last Saturday saw the lads throw away a two-goal lead against Alsager Town eventually having to settle for a share of the points. Ste Edwards and man of the match Phil Williams gave Town a deserved lead but some tactical and personnel changes when the game appeared to be won saw the lads lose momentum and Alsager took advantage, scoring two goals inside the final eight minutes. Tuesday evening saw us back at Edge Green Street as the ‘away team’ as we were hosted by our landlords Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup. If was a pretty drab affair with both sides edging a half each - we did have a cluster of great chances and Nathan Brabin in the Ashton goal pulled off at least three excellent saves while Lee Novak had very little to do inside the 90 minutes. Brabin was continue his excellent performance in the penalty shoot-out as Ashton made the next round winning 4-3. AFC Blackpool arrive on the back of some poor recent form with no wins in their last eight games culminating in last Saturday’s 5-0 drubbing at Colne. Prior to this the sea-siders had earned two creditable draws against Padiham (1-1) and Glossop NE (4-4) and will be looking to hit back with the pressure off in terms of league points. Don’t forget the club are holding a Sportsman’s Evening next Saturday (3rd November) with Howard Kendall and comedian Frankie Allen. We have a small number of tickets still available at £20 which includes a hotpot supper, raffle, etc. All proceeds go to the club. NWCF League News . . . Leek CSOB’s next home game (Saturday 10th November) will be dedicated to the memory of former manager and chairman Chris McMullen. Chris passed away last month following many years of service to the club, and as Programme Editor Stan Lockett explained, the club have decided that the game against Daisy Hill at Harrison Park will be designated as a day to remember Chris. “As many people will be aware, Chris was well respected in the game and he was well liked”, said Stan. “Therefore the Club is intending this game should be dedicated to Chris’s memory as it will be our first home game following his passing. The Match Programme for

that day will be dedicated to Chris and I am hoping to get articles in it from former players who played under Chris at Leek CSOB, and from his former Manager at Leek Town, Neil Baker, who is now Assistant Manager at Crewe Alexandra. “I am also hoping to receive contributions from one or two of his former team mates at Leek Town who played with him in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley in 1990”.

The League’s leading scorer, Formby’s Jason Carey, will be missing from the Squirrels’ line up on Saturday 17th November when they head to face his old club Runcorn Town in the Second Round of the FA Vase. It’s not a game he would have chosen to miss under normal circumstances, but there is a very good reason for Jason’s absence. Over the weekend Jason is to take part in a “Tough Mudder” event, a 12 mile-long obstacle course designed to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie, and not for the faint hearted. However, Jason is putting himself to the test

for a very special reason, as he is raising money for Woodlands Hospice, which provides specialist care and support for people in North Liverpool living with life-threatening illness. It’s a charity that is close to Jason’s heart as he explained. “My fiance Emma’s mum died on the 17th February 2012, after being diagnosed with cancer in December 2011”, said Jason. “She was told she would not be here for Christmas 2011, but fought a hard battle over the following weeks and Woodlands Hospice in North Liverpool was really good and very supportive to her. I’m doing the sponsored 12 mile Tough Mudder challenge at Cholmondeley Estates, in Malpas, Cheshire, along with Emma’s brother Richard Wooder and her brother-in-law Gary Grogan. All the money we raise from sponsorship will be given to Woodlands Hospice, as we all want to do something for them to show our appreciation for the support they gave Emma’s mum and family. “We have all been training hard for the event. Obviously I go training with Formby every week, Richie goes to the gym regularly, and Gary is helping out at a Mixed Martial arts club, but we have all been putting in extra sessions in the gym, as well going swimming, running and doing anything else that will help us get our fitness levels up. I am gutted that Formby are playing on that day in the Vase, out of all the teams they could have got it was Runcorn. But I wouldn’t miss doing Tough Mudder for anything, and hopefully we will raise some decent money. All donations are greatly appreciated and I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has donated so far”.




A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town AFC Managers . . . Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side

sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured left) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge. 1992-93 Mick Holgate (pictured right) presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Having previously been the manager of highly successful local league side ’Furnacemen’s Arms FC’ Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the

club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial

responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However, the club decided it could not wait for a repeat and an upsurge in results as the final few weeks of the 2008-09 season unfolded and Town remained rooted in a relegation spot. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games of the season. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season sees Jimmy McBride makes a return to Town following a brief spell in the Cheshire League with Billinge FC but it proved a difficult season and

Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation. 2012 - present Ian Granite (pictured left) is appointed following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC.

Unearthing Town’s History . . . Over the summer St Helens Town was contacted by John Owens regarding a previously unknown item of club history relating to the original Town club which operated between 1901 and the late 1920’s. John made available a photograph of the St Helens Town team from around 1901 which contained his grandfather William Owens. (pictured below) John said, “My grandfather was born in Garston, Liverpool on 28 December 1880 and played for St Helens around 1901. He is pictured on the back row, fourth from the left and appears to be looking away to the right. Although I don’t know the exact date of the photograph I’d say he was around 20 years old which seems right. He was 6’3” tall and played right back. His playing position was corroborated by my father and it was the position he played for Raith Rovers during the 1903-04 season. “At 17 (1897-8) he was reportedly the youngest professional player in Lancashire earning 2s 6d per a game which was more than he was paid working a Saturday afternoon as a saw doctor at Grayson’s Bobbin works in Window Lane, Garston. I believe he had previously played for Garston Gasworks and subsequently for Tranmere Rovers” Club Chairman John McKiernan added, “We were delighted to hear from John and his photograph is only one we have of the original club. There is some thought that the distinctive backdrop could be the Primrose ground in Park Road but at this moment we are unable to say for certain.”

Ashton Town v St Helens Town . . . Town bow out of Senior Cup in penalty shoot-out

Landlords Ashton Town progressed into the Quarter-Finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup,

taking revenge for last season’s defeat to St. Helens Town at Edge Green Street after a

4-3 penalty shoot-out win, the scores having finished level at 0-0 after 90 minutes.

The game itself was a typical scoreless contest, with few clear chances either way, yet

St. Helens started much the brighter, pacy winger Phil Williams causing the home side

several problems in the opening 15 minutes. It looked only a matter of time for Ian

Granite’s side to take the lead, but any number of opportunities were wasted before Lee

Crompton saw his fierce header pushed clear by keeper Nathan Brabin at full stretch

after 25 minutes.

Shortly afterwards, Adam Howard broke and crossed for Steve Edwards, but he collided with the goalkeeper as

the ball ran clear. A minute later, it was Edwards again who threatened the home line, but his goalbound

header was deflected over the bar. The St. Helens centre forward was enjoying his best spell at this stage and

another chance beckoned after 34 minutes, but he clashed heads with Ashton’s Paul Keenan. As half-time

approached, Chris Williams and Lee Crompton both hit shots high over the bar and, in the final action of the

first period, Edwards almost scored from a half chance.

Edwards failed to re-appear after the interval, Andrew Newcombe coming on, and the game changed

altogether. Ashton were just as dominant in the second half as St. Helens had been in the first, but real

chances were still few and far between. One of those fell to Michael Cummins who drilled in a shot on 53

minutes, which was turned round the post by St. Helens keeper Lee Novak. Soon afterwards, Carl Osman

went off injured, to be replaced by Ashley Rimmer, who created a number of openings, but the ball just would

not run for his team.

As the game drew to a close, Novak was called upon to make only his second serious save and, in injury time,

St. Helens had a clear chance at the other end when an error in the Ashton Town box led to a powerful header

from Newcombe, which Brabin tipped on to the top of the crossbar.

The competition rules do not provide for extra-time, so the game went straight to penalties and, as so often

happens, the team which missed the first penalty went on to win the shoot-out. Novak made a fine save from

the first Ashton spot kick and St. Helens went one-up when Ash Rimmer converted. However, Ashton levelled

only for Newcombe to miss. The home side then went ahead for the first time at 2-1 and Michael Sykes-Wright

saw his kick saved. Novak saved the next kick and Chris Williams put St. Helens level at 2-2. The next two

kicks were both successful, making it 3-3 and Ashton went ahead again at 4-3, only for Phil Williams to put his

kick wide, leaving the home team to celebrate and look forward to a lucrative Quarter-Final tie against one of

the bigger fish.

St Helens Town v Alsager Town . . . Saturday 29th September 2012 North West Counties League, Premier Division St Helens Town 2-2 Alsager Town St Helens Town threw away a lead late in a game for the second week in a row this time in league action against Alsager Town. The hosts started off like a team with something to prove and pushed the visitors back in the first quarter of an hour of the contest. The first chance saw Phil Williams centre from the left plucked off the head of Carl Osman by Tom Harrison in the visitors goal. Further chances saw Osman do well on the left of the box beating his marker getting into the area and firing an effort goalwards which Harrison had to turn behind. Phil Williams was involved again on 15 minutes when his cross from the left wing found Osman on the far post and he turned the ball back towards Scott McNair who could only steer his header wide of the left hand upright. The visitors came into the contest as the half wore on Ryan Broadhead sent a free header wide of the right upright from a left wing corner before Sean Turner spurned a fine chance as he shot straight at Lee Novak in the home goal when well placed. The final clear cut chances of the first half fell to the hosts as first confusion between Harrison and Ben Clarkson saw the defender head past his own stopper who had called for the ball but the centre half recovered well to avert the danger under pressure from Andy Newcombe. Newcombe was again in the thick of the action when he had the final touch after a counter attack which saw Adam Howard and Phil Williams link on the left with the latter sending the ball into the box which the striker got the faintest of touches on and it just went narrowly wide of the right hand post to see the sides level at the interval. St Helens dominated the majority of the second period and looked to press home their advantage, chances fell to Phil Williams who shot wide of the post and Osman who was inches off target with the visiting stopper rooted to the spot. A golden chance to break the deadlock fell to Phil Williams on the far post after good work by Osman on the right wing but the winger could

Another good chance saw Adam Howard cut inside from the left and fire a cross come shot across the face of the goal with no St Helens attacker able to turn the ball home. The deadlock was finally broken on 69 minutes when Skipper Osman sent a fine cross into the box from the right wing and Ste Edwards timed his run to perfection to get between two defenders and poke the ball home. It didn’t take long for the hosts to double their lead as Cole Ashton latched onto a poor kick from Harrison in the Alsager goal and he found Phil Williams who got to the edge of the box and fired an effort towards goal which Harrison looked to have covered be he could only push the effort inside the upright. Phil Williams almost added a third as he curled and effort just wide of the right hand upright. A couple of changes for the home side saw the formation change and the emphasis went out of the home sides game allowing the visitors to haul themselves back into the contest. Substitute James Marrow halved the deficit on 82 minutes when he was found on the edge of the area and his lofted effort looped over Novak finding the top right hand corner of the net. The comeback was complete on 86 minutes when a diagonal ball from the right wing found Leigh Skellern unmarked on the left of the area and he advanced before firing home to level matters. Alsager almost took the lead moments later when Sam Aspinwall headed a corner goalwards which Ashton cleared off the line and the loose ball broke to Liam Prince on the edge of the box and Novak had to be alert to tip his effort over the bar. The hosts had two good chances to take all three points late in the contest as Ash Rimmer was released on the right after an Alsager attack but his effort from 18 yards went over the bar before in added on time Phil Williams centred from the left towards Edwards who leaning backwards headed just over the bar and the teams shared the spoils.

NWCF League News . . . The combined efforts of Winsford United officials Bob Astles and Steve Wright have helped a resident of a local care home to locate a copy of a club history booklet written by her late husband. The story began in late September, when Bob received an e-mail from Val Payne, the manager of a care home in Frodsham. Bob explained: “In the e-mail, Val asked if I could help her locate a small paperback book entitled “History of Winsford United F.C.”, which was written by a man called Royston Blackburn and published approximately five years ago. The e-mail went on to say that sadly Mr Blackburn has passed away, but his widow was a resident in the care home

and would dearly like to obtain a copy. Therefore, any information I was able provide would be greatly appreciated. I knew of the booklet, but I didn’t have a copy myself. However, I remembered that Steve had mentioned something about this booklet in the past, so I forwarded the e-mail to him to see if he could help”. Steve takes up the story: “By a strange coincidence, I had two copies of the booklet sitting on my desk when I received the email from Bob. I immediately contacted Val, explained who I was and that I had a copy I would be more than happy to take up to Frodsham straight away. She said Maureen (Mrs Blackburn) would be overjoyed. “I had first contacted Royston Blackburn early last year, as we had discovered a few copies of his booklet and thought it would be a good idea if I contacted him and asked his permission to reprint it in the match day programme. Royston Blackburn was born and brought up in Winsford, and as a boy he was often taken by his father to see Winsford United playing. He became a reporter on a local weekly newspaper in the 1950s and he covered hundreds of Winsford United matches, both home and away. He later became a journalist on evening newspapers in Nottingham and Leicester. “It took a bit of investigation to find Mr Blackburn, but I eventually got a phone number and address from the local library. The head librarian there remembered Mr Blackburn doing a lot of his information gathering in the library, reading old newspapers etc. He managed to get me the details and after a short conversation with Mr Blackburn, he agreed to let us print the contents of the booklet. “Anyway, a short time after contacting Val at the care home, my wife and I set off to Frodsham with the booklet. When we arrived, we were met at the door by Val, who then ushered us into the lift to go and see Maureen. When the doors of the lift opened she was standing there waiting for us. She said she had seen us getting out of the car, me with the book in my hand, and rushed to the lift! “After a few tears in the day room, Maureen and Val explained that when Royston passed away Maureen wasn’t well herself, so the family saw to everything. Unfortunately they got rid of a few things that Maureen really wanted to keep, so they had set about that morning to try and track a few things down. While Val was on the internet, Maureen mentioned the booklet, so they went to the club website and contacted Bob, as they thought being Club Secretary he would be the best person to start with. Then as they say, the rest is history. “Although to us this was just a record of the club’s history, it means far more than that to Maureen, especially as the book is dedicated to: “my dear wife Maureen”. I shall never forget the look on Maureen’s face when we handed her the book - it was a look of joy tinged with sadness”.
