Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Congleton Town. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Congleton Town to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. Tuesday night saw the visit of Ramsbottom United here to Knowsley Road and it was a rollercoaster of a game in terms of impetus and emotions. Town took the lead through Mike Fargher on 16 minutes and looked to be keeping the visitors at bay as Ramsbottom were reduced to shots from distance which Graeme McCall in the Town goal dealt with easily. A mad five minutes saw Ramsbottom level and then take the lead. Gary Bickerstaffe’s halt time team talk motivated Town into action and Rob Hanley netted just after the restart to level matters. On 55 minutes Mike Scully made it five goals in three matches to put Town into the lead. Town were looking comfortable for the three points until Luke Faulkner was harshly dismissed for a second yellow card on 68 minutes and this changed the face of the game. Ramsbottom buoyed by this stroke of luck took the game to the 10 men of Town but some stoic defending looked to be securing Town the maximum return until a speculative shot from the edge of the box took two deflections and evaded Graeme McCall to give Ramsbottom a share of the spoils that they scarcely deserved. The positives from Tuesday can be taken into this afternoon’s game we played well in spells and looked comfortable against a team above us in the table for the first time this season. The lads will be looking to gain a modicum of revenge today against a Congleton Town side that secured a 2-0 victory under the lights at Booth Street in October. St Helens were not at their best on that evening and will be looking to improve on that display against a Congleton side that have been struggling of late. It is important that we take something for the games against teams around us in the table to ensure that we don't get cut off from the leading pack. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for

this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends

and rivals Congleton Town FC. Let’s hope their players,

officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and

our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy

our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining

encounter!

Today sees Town take to the Knowsley Road pitch for the third time in a week! Following a

2-0 victory last Saturday versus Abbey Hey we entertained Ramsbottom United on Tuesday

evening in what turned out to be a thoroughly entertaining 3-3 encounter.

Another great build-up and neat finish from Mike Fargher saw Town take an early lead

before two goals inside three minutes around the half hour mark put ‘Rammy’ in front

against the run of play. The first half had been a case of two good chances for each team

with our visitors taking theirs while Mike Scully’s early bullet header found the arms of the

Ramsbottom ‘keeper.

The second period started with Town making the most of the strong wind advantage and

some hesitant defending when Rob Hanley coolly slotted home to regain some of his early

season form. Mike Scully hit his fifth goal in three games

when he gave Town the lead on 55 minutes - again a lengthy

and very accurate clearance from ‘keeper Graeme McCall found Scully who danced past the on-coming defenders before

rounding the ‘keeper to slot home. The game turned on the

very disappointing dismissal of Luke Faulkner who harshly

received a second yellow card for a challenge in which he

cleanly won the ball. Prior to this Ramsbottom had been

under significant pressure and Town looked to be in total

control. The man advantage boosted the visitors confidence

and although dominant in possession the Town goal was

rarely threatened. When the equaliser came it was in the

cruellest fashion, taking a double deflection past Graeme McCall in the Town goal just three

minutes from time!!

There were a number of excellent performances on Tuesday with Mike Scully in great form,

Mike Fargher back to his best as well as ‘Man of the Match’ John Elias (pictured above).

On to this afternoon and yet another encounter with a top four team. Town will be hoping

to build on Tuesday’s solid performance against Ramsbottom and take some revenge for

the 2-0 defeat we suffered at Booth Street in mid-October. Congleton will also be looking

to get back to some semblance of their early season form which has surprisingly dipped

over recent weeks. Our visitors have not won since late October when beating Bacup

Borough 2-0; since then they have had six defeats and three draws from their nine outings

and have failed to scored a goal in their last six games - not something anyone could have

imagined a few weeks ago!!

I’m sure Town boss Gary Bickerstaffe and the players will not be taking anything for

granted as we all know the quality in the Congleton outfit - nothing more than a top quality

performance will secure Town the three points and close the gap between ourselves and



today’s visitors.

Our mid-week encounters appear to be over until the New Year so the lads will have a short

break between now and next Saturday when we make the short trip to Ashton Athletic. A

week later (Saturday 19 December) we’re back at Knowsley Road when we entertain

Silsden and our ‘Boxing Day’ encounter should be a cracker as we travel to our friends at

Bootle FC.

In Town Today . . . Events which led to the formation of Congleton Town Football Club, began in the 1890’s, the St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop. They played on West Heath before housing was built in that area, and then became Congleton Hornets Football Club. The Hornets

played at the Willow Street ground famed in Congleton, and competed in the South Cheshire League and recorded its’ record league win, 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season.

Congleton Town Football Club succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, the first three of which saw the club lift the League Championship. Congleton Town FC were formed in 1901 and played in the Crewe & District League. After winning the title in three out of their four seasons in that League, the club moved into the North Staffordshire League in 1905 where they remained until after the Great War.

In 1919/20 Congleton won the League title and decided to take the step up and join the Cheshire County League, regarded as one of the best Leagues outside of the Football League. The Cheshire Senior Cup was won in their first appearance in the final and they also finished as runners up in the League. The following season The Bears were again runners up in the Cheshire County League, but there followed a barren spell which lasted until the Cheshire Senior Cup was won again in 1938. Congleton remained in the Cheshire County League until 1965 when they dropped first into the Manchester League and three seasons later moved to the Mid-Cheshire League. Things began to change for the club when, in 1971/72, they won the League Cup after being runners up in the League that

season. Congleton won the Mid-Cheshire League title on three occassions, 1973/74, 1975/76 and 1977/78, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday cup. When the Cheshire County League expanded to include a second division for the 1978/79 season, Congleton were ready to rejoin the League and their application was accepted. In 1981/82 they won the Division Two title. The following season Congleton became founder members of the North West Counties League Division One, their best season coming in 1985/86 when they were runners up, 1987 saw Town leave to join the new Division One of

the Northern Premier League.



In Town Today . . . Congleton reached the First Round the FA Cup in 1989 saw them drawn away to Crewe Alexandra, going down to two second half goals in front of a crowd of almost 6,000. Initially Congleton secured comfortable mid-table positions in the higher division, their highest position being 6th in 1989/90. In the mid 90’s things

started to go wrong and the club struggled to avoid relegation. In 1999/00 the corner appeared to have been turned as Congleton finished in a strong position, but the following season they finished bottom of the League and were relegated. Congleton’s return to the North West Counties didn’t start well with only two wins out of their first 18 games. manager Sean Connor was sacked and replaced by Kevin Langley and he guided them to safety. More turmoil was in store for the club as they were informed that a large amount of work needed to be completed on their ground, to stay in the League. In April Langley resigned to take over at Kidsgrove Athletic. Congleton immediately appointed former Assistant Manager Bryan Griffiths Kevin returned to Congleton during the 2002/03 campaign and a strong

finish to the season saw them end in 8th place. The 2002/03 campaign saw them end in 8th and the following season saw the club finish in a mid-table 11th position. A relegation fight ensued for the majority of the 2004/5 season and ending finishing in their worst position since their return to the North West Counties League, 19th place. 2005/06 started brightly but swift exits from cup competitions were a disappointment. After many changes in personnel, the team settled to end the season with a creditable run in that held promise for 2006/07. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the managerial reins as the club strived to maintain continuity. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time when

they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup after defeating Witton Albion. At the end of the season Andy Lee stepped down as he announced a proposed move to Blackpool and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were appointed with the task of rekindling the on-field performances. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was re-roofed. After a reasonable season, despite a poor final run in, both Anthony and Darren stayed with the club and the Bears ended in a creditable 4th position, just 1 point away from a 3rd place finish. A final run in of just 1 league defeat in the last 20 matches encouraged everyone. The playing staff has

been strengthened over the off season for a serious attempt to lift some silverware and to complete the ambition for a return to UniBond football.

Vodkat League News Rams Player Critical After Attack Ramsbottom United winger Matthew Edgington (pictured) is in a serious condition at Hope Hospital in Salford following a vicious, unprovoked attack during a night out on Saturday evening in Manchester. Matt, celebrating the Rams' excellent 2-1 win over Alsager Town, suffered a fractured skull, fractured cheekbone and numerous other cuts in the attack which saw him punched from behind and knocked

unconscious. As per Sunday night, Matt is under heavy sedation in the Intensive Care Unit and has remained in an unconscious state, induced by the hospital. Matt's father, John, who has spent the day by his son's side, stated that it is "very distressing for all of us" and he will remain at the hospital with his wife Pauline and Matt's sister Rachael. He has been visited by a couple of Ramsbottom United players, including co-manager Bernard Morley, and good wishes have been flooding in on the RUFC website forum and directly to the family. Ramsbottom United FC issued a statement, stating that they were "deeply shocked by the events on Saturday

night and wished Matt a speedy and healthy recovery and we will do anything we possibly can to assist."

It is with regret Glossop have to announce that Steve Baran (pictured left), whose association with the club extends back over 50 years, died suddenly last week. Steve had been club groundsman right into his

80s, and still liked to do a few jobs around Surrey Street when he could. Although in recent times he had become a little more poorly, he continued to attend games, and watched the Hillmen at Silsden on Saturday. His friends and colleagues at Glossop are in the process of preparing a written tribute, which will be published on the league website in due course.

Town History St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn

were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.

Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953

and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and



Town History Brian Rigby. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause



Town Pen Pictures havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield.

Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this afternoons Vodkat

North West Counties Premier League match against Congleton Town. May the

travelling supporters enjoy the match but not the result.

The last three days have been a time of reflection for myself after the game on

Tuesday night against Ramsbottom United, and the conclusions I’ve drawn are

majoritively positive ones. It was always going to be important for St Helens

Town to show they could compete with the sides sitting at the top of the

division after defeats to both Newcastle Town and our visitors this afternoon

Congleton earlier in the season. And they did just that with a very competent

performance against a big and physical side. It was also an enthralling counter

as Town were leading when they were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes to

go, and eventually succumbed to a deflected goal three minutes from time.

The initial disappointment was replaced with a sense of pride as everybody

gave everything they had to try and grind out a hard fought victory and

although it wasn’t to be, you can’t ask more than that out of a group of

players. A point on the league total is also a bonus and they all count when

the season comes to a close.

This afternoon gives St Helens Town the opportunity

to once again prove they can mix it with the big boys

as Congleton Town visit Knowsley Road. St Helens

Town will be looking to avenge the 0-2 defeat they

suffered at Booth Street earlier in the season when

Congleton were going great guns and keeping on the

tail of Newcastle Town at the top of the league.

However their challenge has

fallen away somewhat in

recent games and they now

find themselves only a single

place above Town coming into

this match. Recent defeats against Padiham, Nelson

and New Mills have seen them slide down the table, but

more worryingly, Congleton Town haven’t scored a goal

in their last six matches so they will be looking to put

that right this afternoon.

The players will be keen to play well this afternoon

after the heartbreaking conclusion to the Ramsbottom

game last Tuesday and hopefully they will be able to

pull something out of the bag to get the points this

afternoon. Let’s cheer them on and hopefully, it’ll be a victory we are cheering

them on to. Stand tall and play proud boys, we’re right behind you.

Vodkat League News Newcastle Town Help Kick Violence Into Touch Players from Newcastle Town FC pledged their support for helping kick domestic violence into touch as they joined the national "Blow the Whistle" campaign last weekend. The team wore white ribbon badges to mark Domestic

Violence Week when they played Nelson at the Lyme Valley Stadium on Saturday, 28 November.

Before kick-off, the players also released 102 white balloons to represent the number of women killed every year due to domestic violence. The white ribbon badges were also offered to supporters, along with information about the effects of domestic violence and local support services. The awareness-raising initiative has been organised by Newcastle Town and the Newcastle Safer Communities Partnership.

"We are delighted that Newcastle Town are joining us as we blow the whistle on violence against women," said Debbie Owen, domestic violence co-coordinator for Newcastle Borough Council. "Teams from many leagues have backed this year's white ribbon campaign, including Premiership sides such as Stoke City and Chelsea."

Newcastle Town also featured an article in the m at ch pro gra mm e h i g h l i g h t i n g t h e campaign.

"We are happy to be involved - by wearing a white ribbon, our players are showing that they condemn violence against women," said Ray Tatton, c lub secretary.

With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, B u r n l e y ,

Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Tuesday 1st Dec - Vodkat Premier Division; St Helens Town 3-3 Ramsbottom Utd

St Helens Town earned a point in the top of the table clash with Ramsbottom United at

Knowsley Road but they will have felt they should have taken all the points. The hosts

missed an early chance to open the scoring on 5 minutes when Iain Dyson found Mike Scully unmarked in the 6 yard box but the striker could only direct the header at the keeper.

Another promising move on 13 minutes saw Phil Mitchell latch onto a crossfield ball from John

Elias and advance to the edge of the box where he beat his defender but scuffed his shot and

it was a routine gather for the keeper. Town broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Mitchell

against collected a crossfield ball getting to the area before linking with Scully on the right of

the box he in turn fed Mike Fargher who made no mistake finding the bottom right hand

corner of the net to put the hosts into a deserved lead. The hosts were handling the threat

posed by the visitors well with Ramsbottom reduced to speculative efforts from outside the

area. One such effort was to prove costly for the hosts when Ramsbottom equalised on 32

minutes. In a similar move to the one that had broken the deadlock Carl Lomax found Andy Sensale on the right of the area and he fed Lee Connell who shot home from 20 yards.

Having lost the lead Town fell behind three minutes later when Lomax was afforded plenty of

space on the right and he picked out an unmarked Barry Massey and the striker’s header was

well placed and McCall could not get enough on it to keep it out. Massey had a chance to

extend the lead just before the interval when a free kick was cleared to the edge of the box

but his effort was well over the bar.

Less than two minutes after the restart Town were level. A wind assisted clearance by Luke

Faulkner was missed by a visiting defender on the edge of the area and Rob Hanley latched onto it before drawing the keeper and finding the net with a sublime finish over him. End to

end action saw Town take the lead but only after Ramsbottom had spurned a great chance.

Lomax found Phil Dean in acres of space on the left of the Town box but he could only shoot

wide of the right hand post. The visitors were soon regretting this miss as from the goal kick

McCall’s ball was flicked on by Hanley and Scully collected rounded Campbell in the visitors’

goal before slotting home. Town were in control of the game and looked to be coasting to a

victory when the game changed on a dismissal. Faulkner was harshly cautioned for a

challenge where he won the ball and being his second yellow saw the host reduced to ten

men for the remaining 22 minutes of the contest. This gave Ramsbottom impetus to take the

game to the hosts but in the next ten minutes of the contest they failed to test the Town resolve despite dominating possession, indeed it was Town’s Marc Stephens who had the best

chance of this period on a counter attack Hanley held the ball up well and found Stephens

whose effort from 20 yards saw Campbell have to turn it wide at full stretch. Further

pressure from the visitors saw Lomax have his shot parried by McCall the rebound fell to

Sensale and his goalbound effort saw headed over by Bernard Morley when it seemed easier

to score. Barry Shuttleworth found Connell with a left wing cross but he could not direct his

diving header wide of the keeper. Town looked to be holding on for the maximum return but

a were to be denied by a brace of deflections on 87 minutes. Joel Pilkington tried his luck

from the edge of the box and his shot would have been a routine gather for McCall had it not have taken two deflections on the way through and gave the Town custodian no chance to

earn the visitors a point they scarcely deserved.

Burscough Striker Thomas Moore Signs for Marine UniBond Premier League Marine Football Club have announced the signing of striker Thomas Moore from Burscough. Moore, 25, has played for Skelmersdale United last season and previously was with Prescot Cables. He played in midfield at Skelmersdale and Prescot and was converted to a striker at Burscough this season. Marine Chairman Paul Leary said, “This is a good signing for

Marine and he will add a bit more strength and experience to our young strike force. His signing is well timed as we look for a push up the league into the new-year. I would like to thank Burscough for their co-operation in enabling us to sign him today and I wish them well for the future.” Marine Manager Kevin Lynch said, “I have been tracking Thomas’s progress over the years and I am over the moon that he has joined us. He will give me new options up front and his experience will take a lot of pressure off the other strikers. Gregory Glapwell's Double Hat-Trick Hero Lee Gregory was UniBond Division

One South side Glapwell’s double hat-trick hero in the 7-1 hammering of host’s Willenhall Town at a rain-lashed Noose Lane. The on-loan Mansfield Town striker opened his account less than ten minutes into the game, before doubling his tally just ahead of the half-hour to give Glapwell a 2-0 half-time lead.

Gregory completed his first hat trick with an unstoppable 22-yard free-kick ten minutes into the second half and then added a fourth eleven minutes later. Willenhall’s Rory Curtis spoiled the party by pulling a goal back shortly after that, but Glapwell substitute Ian Brown got into the act three minutes later to restore Glapwell’s four goal advantage. Gregory’s fifth came with less than ten minutes to go and he completed the rout with his first-ever six-goals-in-a-game by way of a wonderfully-crafted effort five minutes before the end.

St. Helens Town in the Mid-Sixties A large part of Town’s records were destroyed some years ago following the death of a long-serving secretary, so when former player and reserve team manager Eric Bond loaned the club official records for the 1965/66 and 1966/67 seasons, it presented an unexpected opportunity to look in detail at the club’s and individual players’ performances. Player-manager at the time was ex-Bolton Wanderers star, Derek Hennin, who was in the middle of a four-year spell in charge at Hoghton Road. The club’s performances were, if anything, a little disappointing, finishing the 1965/66 in 17th

position in the Lancashire Combination, improving to end the 1966/67 season in 15th spot. The individual results were as follows: 1965/66 1966/67

Liverpool have dropped to the Liverpool County Combination. Town’s leading scorers in 1965/66 were John Atherton (20), Ray Fairweather (11), Hurst (8), Norman Turner (5), Colin Frodsham (4) and John Smith, Jackie Anders and Stainton with 3 each.

Leading marksmen in 1966/67 were Jim McKiernan (19), John Atherton (9), Jackie Balmer (8), Dennis Winter (5), Norman Turner (4) and Henry Oakes (3). Geoff Nulty, who went on to play for Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton made his Town debut at Barrow Reserves on 30th April 1966 and played twice the following season.

Saints Alive . . . A man asks his wife what she would like for her next birthday.

“I’d love to be ten again,” she tells him, wistfully. When the day

arrives he gets up early and pours her a big bowl of Frosties for

breakfast, followed by two boiled eggs with bread soldiers, and

orange juice. Then he whisks her off to the local theme park.

What a day! He takes her on every ride: the runaway train, the

pirates’ galleon, the corkscrew roller coaster, and many more.

Several hours later she staggers out of the theme park, her head

reeling and her stomach feeling upside down. Relentless in his

efforts to make his wife’s wish come true, he then takes her to a

McDonald’s restaurant where he orders her a Happy Meal with extra fries, along

with a large chocolate milkshake. Then he takes her to the cinema to see the

latest Disney feature, complete with popcorn and a fizzy drink. Finally, she

wobbles home with her husband and collapses into bed, absolutely exhausted.

He tucks her in, kisses her gently on the forehead and whispers, “Well, darling,

what was it like being ten again?” She opens her eyes, glares up at him and

replies, “You buffoon - I meant my dress size!”

Quasimodo passes Esmerelda on the stairs to the bell tower of Notre Dame

Cathedral and notices she is carrying a wok in her hand. “Are we having stir-fry

noodles for tea?” enquires Quasimodo. “Certainly not,” replies Esmerelda. “I’m

going to iron your shirts.”

A newspaper correspondent visiting Afghanistan for a second time notices that,

since the fall of the Taliban, wives who used to walk ten paces behind their

husbands are now walking ten paces in front. Intrigued by such a change in

culture, he approaches one of the men and asks if it’s a sign of a new equality.

“Oh, no,” replies the man. “Landmines.”

A man pushing a trolley round a supermarket turns the corner at the end of an

aisle and collides with another man pushing a trolley in the opposite direction.

“I’m ever so sorry,” he apologises. “I was trying to find my wife and just wasn’t

looking where I was going.” “Oh, that’s alright,” says the other man. “Funnily

enough, I’ve lost my wife in here too.” “What does she look like?” asks the first

man. “She’s gorgeous, in her early twenties, with blonde hair, a terrific figure,

and legs up to her armpits,” replies the second man. “What does your wife look

like?” he asks in return. “I may have seen her on my travels.” “Oh, forget about

her,” replies the first man, his eyes lighting up. “Let’s just find yours.”
