Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this the first home game of the 2010/11 season an FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay against KoolSports Northern Counties East League, Premier Division Nostell Miners Welfare. Let me open by welcoming the players, management, committee and supporters of our visitors. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this evening after their trip from Wakefield. We are here this evening after the two sides drew 1-1 on Saturday at the Welfare Ground. Lee Owens put Town into the lead just before the interval poking home a Marc Stephens’ cross and a good save denied Liam Arnold a first competitive goal for the club soon afterwards. A lacklustre second period saw Town sit on their lead and the sucker punch came with five minutes remaining as Liam Coughlan netted from close range after good work by Ernest Boafo. Casting our minds back over the first 10 days of the season we have had mixed fortunes and have been quite frustrating at times. We started out by losing 2-1 at Alsager Town in a game which we dominated but failed to kill the game off and turn chances into goals. After having two efforts chalked off we finally broke the deadlock through Marc Stephens only for the hosts to quickly level. Despite plenty of pressure from our boys the hosts netted a counter attack winner late on to take the maximum return. The following Tuesday saw us venture to Winsford United who had won 2-1 at Formby on the opening day. Despite an early goal from Liam Pearson we found ourselves 2-1 down after 15 minutes before Brian Hatton levelled and Dave Garnell netted a second half winner to earn the first win of the new season. This evening’s game starts a run of home matches with Barnoldswick Town visiting Knowsley Road on Saturday and this is followed by the visits of Congleton Town the following Tuesday and the possibility of a home FA Cup tie the following Saturday (28th) should we advance this evening. The winners of this evening’s replay will play host to either Glossop North End or Wigan Robin Park, who are also replaying this evening after having draw 2-2 at Glossop on Saturday. Should the scores be level at 90 Minutes, extra time will be played and should the scores be level at the end of extra time the tie will be decided on penalties. Let’s get behind the lads and hopefully cheer them on to victory and a home FA Cup tie in the next round. Enjoy the game . . .

Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay against Nostell Miners Welfare FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a good journey from Wakefield and enjoy our hospitality for their short stay, but not the result. Tonight’s replay means we’ve lost our planned Vodkat League encounter with Formby which will now be re-arranged. This evening sees Town start their tenth season at Knowsley Road and as many of you will know it will be our final campaign here before moving temporarily to near neighbours Ashton Town from the beginning of October (exact date to be confirmed). We will be rejoining our Rugby League partners on completion of the new stadium sometime later next year. Although only a few miles down the road, we’re unsure how the move to Ashton is likely to impact on attendances and I’d like to ask everyone to make their best efforts to support the lads both ‘home’ and away and spread the word about our fixtures (match posters available). Tonight we welcome our new Main Sponsors Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have built on the support they offered the club throughout last season. I’d like to offer my thanks to Gareth Shone and Steve Pearce for their continue help and support. There’s plenty of club news to discuss over the next few home games and we’ll be giving you details of all the new players (as well as details of those who have sought pastures new). In Town Today . . . Records exist that a team from Nostell Colliery won a Wakefield District football competition in the 1890s; the club has photographs of Nostell Colliery teams from 1915 and 1921. At that time, the football field was not in its present location but on two sites close by. The Miners Welfare was formed in 1928 after the purchase of the land by the Miner's Trust Fund. The sum of £400 was paid to a local land owner for 4.5

acres which includes the land on which the present ground is situated. A Miners Welfare football team was formed and enjoyed early success. The club owns a medal donated by a former player from the 1930s and a photograph of the team that won the Wakefield & District League in 1938. After the war Welfare provided much needed recreation for the local community and the football team was successful in several annual colliery competitions. In the late fifties a team from the Welfare visited Belgium to compete against local opposition, a feat unprecedented at the time. The club are proud owners of the trophy they won on that successful tour. In the late 1960s, the club had a period of sustained success winning several Wakefield District competitions and eventually being selected into the West Yorkshire League. They lifted the League and Cup double in the 1966-67 season. However, that successful team eventually broke up and the club fell back to the Wakefield League in the early 1970s. They enjoyed relative success the club began to develop again and two teams were formed the first team joining the West Yorkshire League in 1982. Following mining subsidence to the ground, fund raising of over £30,000 allowed the pitch to be leveled off, drainage installed and other ground improvements undertaken. However in 1987 Nostell colliery was closed, the nearby colliery houses were demolished and the Welfare struggled to survive. The football continued through this difficult period and promotions through the Divisions of the West Yorkshire League eventually led to Premier Division status. The most successful period in the club's distinguished history was about to begin, with the appointment of current manager Alan Colquhoun in the late 1990s. After initially struggling in the Premier League, the club gradually improved, eventually being crowned Champions of the West Yorkshire League in 2004/5. The club lifted the Wakefield & District Trophy on six occasions appeared in the West Yorkshire Premier League Cup Final on three consecutive occasions between 2002/3 & 2004/5 winning the cup in 2003/4 and also appeared in two county cup finals. Off the field the introduction of the coalfield regeneration trust encouraged other funders to invest in the Miners Welfare, which was renamed the Crofton Community Centre. Approximately £1.5

. . . Nostell Miners Welfare Million was secured to provide the current facilities. Sport England, the Football Foundation and the FA provided substantial sums of money to help the football side of the developments. The improvements both on and off the field allowed a successful application by the club to the Northern Counties East League and an exciting new venture for the club. Since gaining promotion to the Northern Counties East League, Nostell finished in a respectable fourth position in their first season, 2006/7 and due to the UniBond league adding a second division at step 4 and a NCEL club folding the club were promoted to the Premier League. Nostell had a fantastic first season in the Premier Division finishing 5th after leading the division for the first quarter of the season. This was followed by a disappointing 2008/9 season when Nostell finished 13th after a congested run-in. However despite the lowly league finish the club secured their first silverware in the NCEL beating Scarborough Athletic over two legs to win the Presidents Cup. The 2008/9 season also saw Nostell have their first player progress to the Football League with Oli Johnson being signed by Stockport County after impressing a pre-season game against them. After a season at County Johnson move on to Norwich City. Last term saw Nostell struggle at the wrong end of the Premier Division eventually finishing in 18th position just avoiding relegation back to Division One.

Match Report Saturday 14th August 2010; FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round Nostell Miners Welfare 1-1 St Helens Town 0-1: Lee Owens 42 Minutes, 1-1: Liam Coughlan 85 Minutes. Nostell Miners Welfare & St Helens Town will have to do it all over again at Knowsley Road on Tuesday after a score draw in Wakefield this afternoon. The hosts almost opened the scoring on 4 minutes when a free kick from the right was headed goalwards by Jimmy Jagger and looked to be a certain goal but Dale Newbrook making his debut in the Town goal pulled off a fantastic save. At the other end a corner worked short and sent into the area by Marc Stephens, Liam Pearson got a touch on it with his head but could only steer it at Gavin Ansley in the home goal. Moments later Stephens sent a free kick goalwards from 20 yards out but the home stopper claimed it at his left hand post. On the half hour mark Mike Fargher did well on the right of the area and found Stephens but his header was held by Ansley. With the half drawing to a close Ray Gore found Liam Arnold on the right with a quick free kick and he unleashed a fantastic effort on goal which drew an excellent save from Ansley in the Nostell goal. The deadlock was broken from the set piece as Stephens sent the ball into the box from the right and Lee Owens was on hand to poke the ball home on the far post. Town almost doubled their lead early in the second period when Stephens sent a free kick into the area from the right which struck Darren Rushton and deflected onto the base of the right hand upright before being turned behind off Pearson. Just after the hour Nostell created a chance from a throw in on the left, Matt Denton found Ernest Boafo who headed across the face of the goal from the front post but his effort went wide of the far post. Sam Jackson and Tom Hope both had long range efforts soon afterwards but neither troubled Newbrook in the Town goal. On 75 minutes Town also won the tie with a carbon copy of their first half goal. Stephens sent a free kick in from the left and Owens was again free on the far post but he just failed to arrive in time to steer the ball home. With time running out and the visitors looking to have advanced into the next round the hosts levelled to earn a trip to Merseyside on Tuesday. Boafo caused problems in the Town box with a jinking run and his ball into the danger area was tapped home from close range by Liam Coughlan to ensure the sides will meet again in midweek. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former

. . . A Brief History German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone. The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club. I am absolutely delighted with our partnership with St Helens Town AFC. When I was a teenager I had a very hard decision to make, Football or Rugby League, I choose Rugby League and fortunately I have never looked back. The partnership with “Town” will be very fruitful, everyone has a great chance to win a great Toyota Aygo, can i take this opportunity to thank Johnson’s Toyota, everyone associated with the club and a special thank you to club chairman John McKiernan. I look forward to visiting and taking in a few games. I have to thank the club for something close to my heart, my son Taylor last year played for the Under 8’s. The excellent coaching given to my son enabled him to have trials at the majority of premiership clubs in the North West. I am pleased to say he was selected to join the Liverpool Academy, I am so proud and hopefully he could develop into the next Steve Gerrard. Every home game i will be writing a article for match day programme, this will keep all town fans up to date with everything involved with the charity. The Foundation is growing and we have some very special events within St Helens in the next 6 months. By the time you read this programme it will have been announced about the highest accolade that can be given to any Rugby League player and my next challenge. I was absolutely elated to be asked to be Guest of Honour at this years Challenge Cup Final. It is a great honour and one that came as a complete surprise. It is good that the RFL have kept it 'in house' and are starting to recognise the work that many past players do for the game and charity. Now that the final 2 teams are confirmed, it will give me great pleasure in awarding any of these two great clubs with the trophy, as the players, staff and fans of both clubs have played a big part in the success of The Steve Prescott Foundation, which I am very grateful for. The 5 marathons in 5 days will without doubt, be the hardest of all the previous challenges we have undertaken as a Foundation. It will be made especially hard due to the lack of time to prepare and train. I think I'll have to do an Eddie Izzard and train while I'm doing it. This is such a tight schedule because our plans have been forced to change, from the original idea of dragon boating to the Grand Final. This had to be discarded due to health and safety issues around the boats travelling through the locks. I have started running again and I’m hoping my marathon attempt in April, will put me in good stead but I know I’ve got a long way to go. I’m on holiday at the moment in Lanzarote, but I’m trying to get some training in. This is proving hard as we are all abusive - sorry, I mean all inclusive and the sun is shining which seems to drain you rather than motivate you. St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Johnsons Toyota Liverpool for their generous support and hopefully the public and business community will get behind the project.’ He added, ‘The Foundation is very well know across the region and has been successful in raising a huge amount of money across a number of activities, many of the sport related, and we thought the Town’s football club should do its bit!’ ‘Steve Prescott is best known for his Rugby League exploits with St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and as a GB Lions tourist; but there is a football connection as his son played for the St Helens Town Juniors U8s last season and has recently been signed by Liverpool FC.’ Gareth Shone, General Sales Manager at Johnsons said, ‘Our partnership with St Helens Town continues to develop and this season we have become the club’s main sponsor. We will be looking at a range of activities to ensure we both benefit from the partnership – with the ‘win-a-Toyota-Car’ project hopefully proving to be a successful start.’ The club have 200 sponsorship packages available at £100 each which will give individuals and businesses the opportunity to win the car. In addition, sponsor details will be added to a ‘roll-of-honour’ in the club’s printed and on-line matchday programme and sponsors will have their details added to the official club website. Vodkat League News "Support Troubled Non-League Clubs", Says Brent

Bacup Borough manager Brent Peters is calling on the FA to set up a fund aimed at helping out clubs such as Nelson, who are forced out of existence because of a lack of financial support. Writing in the match programme for tonight's game against Padiham, Brent says the supports that is given to professional clubs when they get into financial trouble should be replicated at non-league level. He writes: "When I heard the news about Nelson I was saddened by it, but not surprised. By this, I do not mean anything disrespectful to how the

club may have been run, nothing could be further from the truth, but I do know just how difficult it is here at Bacup Borough. We occupy a Sports Bar that can be hired out for private functions, but sadly Nelson did not have the luxury of such a facility. So if we find it hard with such a facility, it must have been a real impossible task for Nelson. "They tell me there is a lot of money in the top tier of our game. This being the case I think there should be some sort of trust set up within the FA in order to help clubs like Nelson in their hour of need. Let's face it, how can it be right that a club with such a proud history like Nelson just go off the radar? During my tenure here at Bacup Borough I have seen Haslingden Football Club go, Great Harwood Town go, Darwen Football Club go and now Nelson. Yet within the powerful corridors of the FA there is nothing set up in a way to offer help to clubs. In the Football League the wonderful organisation of the PFA have been seen to offer financial help to clubs that have found themselves in a situation of almost having to finish. Someone, somewhere should look at the feeder clubs within the pyramid - after all, there are clubs such as Nelson and Darwen with proud histories to be protected".

In Other News . . . Update from Causeway Lane

Matlock Town first choice goalkeeper Adam Sollitt faces an anxious battle against the clock in order to be fit for the Gladiators' opening Evo-Stik Premier Division game of the new season at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday week. Sollitt was forced off with a back injury just twenty minutes into the 1-1 pre season friendly draw at Belper last weekend. "He's struggling at the moment" admitted boss Mark Atkins on Thursday night. "It's a spasm and he's due to see someone tomorrow and hopefully then he'll be a little bit better. Obviously we'll not be including him in the squad this weekend, we'll just have to wait and see if he improves sufficiently to make the first game." Atkins confirmed that if Sollitt does not make it, then goalkeeping coach and assistant manager Nick Buxton will play in goal. "Adam's injury isn't long term so we've no plans to bring anyone in at this

stage. Bucko did very well for us when called upon last season so I've every confidence that he'll do equally as well if needed now". Sollitt's injury aside, the manager was pleased with what he saw at Christ Church Meadow. Striker Dene Cropper went between the posts for the remaining seventy minutes as a weakened Matlock side fought back from a half time deficit to level late on through Ben Algar. "We rested a few lads but those who came in did well. We passed the ball quite well without being as progressive as we'd been in earlier games. We were never in any danger defensively, their one shot took a deflection for their goal. We created a few chances and should probably really have created a few more, but this was one of the best pre season games for me as we were able to give some new players sixty or even ninety minutes and I got to learn a great deal about them in a match situation." One surprise name on the teamsheet was Kris Bowler who decided his future lies with Matlock after a telephone call to Atkins last Thursday, after a return to the Gladiators ranks appeared to have fallen through. "Kris did very well, he was well in with the other lads, passing the ball well and working well within the team shape. Towards the end he walked away from a confrontation which was also heartening" said Atkins who was able to give striker Nathan Joynes a brief cameo appearance late on. Joynes picked up a foot injury, thought at first to be a hairline fracture, in Matlock's first pre-season outing at Armthorpe on July 13. "Nathan had no reaction after the ten or fifteen minutes we gave him at Belper and he's also trained twice this week. He's two or three weeks behind the other lads but at least he's on his way back”

Around The Grounds Alder Street – Atherton Collieries

Having been relegated from the Vodkat League Premier Division at the end of the 2008/9 season Colls played their campaign in the First Division last term and as such St Helens never paid a visit to Alder Street last season. Upon arriving at the ground for our penultimate pre-season contest on Saturday I was pleased to see that the ground had had a bit of a make over. Upon entering through the turnstiles the

portakabins that house the dressing rooms are off to your left and after this is two portakabin painted in club colours of Black & White stripes the first of which is for half time hospitality and the second is home to the local pigeon club! As you turn the corner you pass another portakabin which houses the canteen and then comes the clubhouse. This facility has also has a recent overhaul and is now a lot more spacious and light than it was on my first visit many years ago. After sampling the beverages and venturing back outside you approach a stand which has covered standing and at the far end a seating area. Behind the goal at the far end is hard standing and coming back around the side of the pitch towards the entrance to the ground is the main stand which is completely filled with seats. The improvement since my previous visit is that this stand used to contain rows and rows of benches and now is filled with red plastic tip-up seats salvaged from Leigh RMI’s Hilton Park. The ground has improved since my visit and in my opinion is better than some of the present Premier Division grounds in terms of facilities, clubhouse etc and lets hope that Colls can get back into the Vodkat League’s top flight soon. Overall score: 7/10

All Our Yesterdays . . . Town’s demise and reformation It will be remembered that the original St. Helens Town club was formed in 1901. What is less clear is how long the club survived. Some accounts state that Town folded in 1923, but research in the local press shows the club struggled on until at least 1928. St. Helens had two newspapers, the St. Helens Reporter and the St. Helens Newspaper, both of which published twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays, until the mid-1950s. Between the wars, local sport was dominated by the town’s two professional Rugby League, St. Helens and St. Helens Recs. There was also a thriving local football competition in the St. Helens Combination. All three entities commanded most of the space on the sports pages in the 1920s and, as a consequence, very few column inches were devoted to “Town Notes”. Town’s position was further squeezed from 1927 onwards, after rivals Prescot Cables were promoted mid-way through the season to replace Fleetwood in the Lancashire Combination and from that point onwards, the Cables were the principal local football club, Town appearing only occasionally in the local press. League tables featuring St. Helens Town appeared only once every few weeks in the local press for 1927/28 and 1928/29. Indeed, very few match reports appeared at all, so it is impossible to say definitively what matches were played and when the club finally ceased to function. “Town Notes” for 4th May 1928, under the heading “Will the Club continue?” provide interesting reading: “The future of the Town club is very problematical. Some of the officials, feeling that the public have refrained from giving the club their necessary support during the last three seasons, have decided to retire. It is now a question whether or not there can be found a few enthusiasts with sufficient interest in Association Football to take their places. Thanks to the generosity of a few friends, the club is less embarrassed financially than at any stage of its career so that, should anyone offer to come along and help run the club, they will have the benefit their predecessors have not enjoyed. Mr. T. Wall, 217 Derbyshire Hill Road, Parr, will be pleased to hear from anyone willing to take up office.”

The 1927/28 season saw the transfers of five star players: Fairhurst and Thomas had signed for Liverpool, although Thomas was placed with Runcorn to gain experience; Tunstall went to Aston Villa, via Prescot, Peachey signed for Bradford City and Bromilow joined Bolton Wanderers via Atherton. Nevertheless, the club’s finances were under pressure, as it was stated that in one home game that season, although four of these stars played, the gate was insufficient to cover the referee’s fee. The beginning of the 1928/29 season saw two trial games take place at Park Road and players were asked to meet at the club’s headquarters at the Black Horse. The opening game of the season in the Senior Division on 1st September, produced a draw against Bryn Celtic (no match report could be found). Manchester North End visited Park Road in the FA Cup on 15th September and, in a goalless game, Town were represented by: Milligan, Taylor, Gutteridge, Smith, Flaherty, Anders, Fairclough, Pilkington, Whitley, Aspinwall and Middlehurst. The replay, at Blackley, four days later was described as a “scrappy game” which Town lost 3-4, goals coming from

. . . All Our Yesterdays Middlehurst and Anders (2). That appears to be the last Town match report in the local press. Another league game was played that month, which was won, then there was a gap of several weeks until early November, when a game was lost and this appears to have been the last before the club folded. That sad event does not appear to have been worthy of even a mention in either of the local papers. Eighteen years on and, following the end of the Second World War, George Fryer and several other local businessmen, decided upon re-forming the Town club and acquired a lease of the former Sutton Cricket Club ground at Hoghton Road. Filled with undue optimism, the club was entered into the FA Cup but, drawn against Prescot Cables, they failed to fulfil the fixture. Embarking upon a different course, Town took over the Derbyshire Hill Rovers club in the St. Helens Combination during the 1946/47 season. Several of that team’s players formed the nucleus of the Town club, which joined the Liverpool County Combination at the start of the 1947/48 season. The first game, on 27th August, away to Prescot BI, resulted in a 0-0 draw. Town’s team was: Holmes, Jones, Gaskell, Burrows, Farrar, Jackman, Collins, Hughes, Dillon, Burke and Fairhurst. A crowd of around 2000 saw Town’s first home game the following Saturday, against Newton YMCA. The game finished 1-1, Boon scoring the first goal for the YMCA and Hughes opening Town’s account. The first win was obtained in the return game against Prescot BI on 3rd September, Town storming to a 4-0 success, thanks to goals from Collins, Fryer (2) and an own goal by Hobbs. The first season’s highlight was a sparkling 10-4 victory over Everton “A”. There were two goals apiece for Hughes, Pheasant, Northey, Burke and Gregory.

Vodkat League News Harry's Name Game

Anyone visiting Ramsbottom United this season will see a few changes to the place since the end of last season - none more so than the new sign above the extended main stand to announce the new name for the Riverside Ground. "The Harry Williams Riverside Stadium" is where Ramsbottom United will be playing their matches from the 2010/2011 season, in honour of the man whose vision back in 1966 created the club from scratch and is now reaping the rewards of his efforts, some 45 years later.

The sign, which appeared overnight following some sneaky work from supporter Ian McColl and a band of other Rammy fans, took the hard working Harry by surprise. But, following a poll on the Ramsbottom United FC website which showed that over 90% of the supporters backed the move to honour the club's Chairman and Founder, the move took place and the ground changed forever more. Whilst stunned by the sign, Harry was delighted all the same and now joins his fellow worker on the ground, Jack Wolfenden, in having their names shown proudly on the arena that they lovingly work so hard upon. As many people around the league will know, Harry is not a man who seeks publicity, especially when it comes to being recognised for the work he does for the club. But with his customary humility, he admitted he was very pleased to be honoured in this way, and after 45 years of involvement with the club he founded, to see his name above the ground was very special. Harry said: "It's not the sort of thing you can do for yourself, it's something that someone else has to do, so it's nice that a few lads got together, decided it was a good idea and everyone else agreed. "At the end of the day the club and facilities are for the people of Ramsbottom to use and enjoy, but I've been involved with the club for 45 years and it's nice to be able to say I've finally arrived!". With all the changes made to the ground, the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium is now one of the finest non-league grounds at this level and is now completely ready should the club achieve their goal of promotion in the near future with the dug-outs now on the same side of the pitch and the perimeter fence moved to allow full disabled access around the ground. Some £7,000 has been forked out to pay for the changes but it was money well spent to continue to improve the already impressive stadium.

Two elderly women are out driving in a large car from which both can barely see over the dashboard. As they are cruising along they come to a set of traffic lights. The lights are on red, but they just go straight through. The woman in the passenger seat thinks to herself, “I think I must be losing it - I could have sworn we just went through a red light.” After a few more minutes they come to another set of lights showing red, and again they go right through. This time, the woman in the passenger seat is almost sure that the light is set at red, but still has a niggling doubt that she’s losing it. By now she’s getting extremely nervous and decides to pay very close attention to the road ahead, and to the next set of traffic lights in

particular. At the next crossroads, she sees that the lights are definitely at red, but they go straight through once more. “Do you know you’ve just gone through three red lights in a row?” she enquires of the driver. “You could have killed the pair of us!” Her friend looks at her in disbelief. “I thought you were driving,” she gasps. Two blokes meet up in the street and, not having seen one another for some time, start catching up. One of them has his wife with him, and after a while she pipes up, “I’ve done the Pennine Way, you know.” The men take no notice and carry on, but a few minutes later she interrupts again. “And I’ve been all round Snowdonia.” The men carry on talking but she persists, “I walked the full length of Hadrian’s Wall last summer.” Her husband can see that his friend is starting to get a little annoyed by these constant interruptions. “You’ll have to excuse the wife,” he explains. “She does tend to ramble!” A young man eating in McDonald’s notices an elderly couple sitting down to have lunch. He sees that they have ordered just one meal and drink, but have also taken an empty cup. As he watches, the gentleman carefully divides the hamburger in half, then counts out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each has half of them. He then pours half of the soft drink into the extra cup and sets it in front of his wife. The old guy then begins to eat while his wife sits watching, with her hands folded in her lap. The young man decides to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they wouldn’t have to split just one between them. “Oh, there’s no need to do that,” says the old gentleman. “You see, we’ve been married for sixty years, and have always shared everything 50/50.” Rather touched by this story, the young man asks the old lady when she is going to eat her portion of the meal. “It won’t be long,” she replies. “But it’s his turn with the teeth.” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
