Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Carlsberg Vase, First round tie against fellow Vodkat League outfit Oldham Boro. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us at our new home, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after the game. Tuesday was disappointing for a number of reasons, after the late notification from the powers that be at Knowsley Road the planned send off of football at the old ground was shelved after plenty of work had been put in behind the scenes with various events planned for the evening of the game. On the pitch whist we played well in spells we did not look likely to cause an upset against the leaders and in the end a lack of firepower with Liam Pearson serving the final match of his suspension for the sending of at Glossop in the FA Cup and Iain Dyson unable to play due to a calf injury, both will hopefully be back in the squad for this afternoon’s game. On the plus side we became the first side to score two past the Millers in the league this season as their miserly defence had only conceded five goals in their nine league contests before Tuesday evening. We had plenty of possession in the opening period and both of the visitors goals in the first period came against the run of play including the second when Town were enjoying their best spell of the contest. Even after falling 4-1 behind 15 minutes after the restart the lads did not let their heads go down and pulled a goal back with 10 minutes remaining through Mike Deakin and pressed trying to further add to the scoreline. This afternoon sees us back in cup action in the FA Vase and our third home tie of the competition so far after having beaten NCEL outfits Brodsworth Welfare and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic in the First and Second qualifying rounds respectively. Today’s opposition are a little closer to home with Oldham plying their trade in our First Division and currently lying in 16th position having won one and drawn two of their opening seven league contests. They advanced to today’s tie with a 3-2 replay victory over Abbey Hey after the initial match finished in a 0-0 draw, incidentally Oldham’s solitary league victory also came at the expense of Abbey Hey, a 4-3 success back in August. There were a few “spies” from Oldham in attendance at Alder Street on Tuesday and Lee and the lads will know they will be in for a battle this afternoon. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round Proper tie against fellow Vodkat League opponents Oldham Boro FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a pleasant journey, enjoy our hospitality as well as an entertaining encounter. While we have played at Ashton Town before (both as the ‘home’ and ‘away’ side) today marks our first fixture at our new home and we must thank the Ashton Town committee for their continued support as we now plan for a return to St Helens and the new stadium as some point next year. The manner of our departure from Knowsley Road was a huge disappointment and like other incidents over recent seasons has again left a sour taste in the mouths of Town officials, players and fans alike. There’s no doubt Tuesday’s planned final hooray at Knowlsey Road had generated a great deal of interest but our plans were scuppered (while we understand the reasons it doesn’t make it any more palatable). Our attempt to mark the occasion as well as raise some much needed funds fell by the wayside and our ten years, 240 competitive games and the 859 goals scored at Saints can now be consigned to the history books - Jeff Voller has collated some very interesting statistics about our time at Saints which are available elsewhere in today’s programme. Tuesday evening’s home game against New Mills was staged at Atherton Collieries and our league leading visitors proved why they are favourites and front runners for the Vodkat League Premier Division Championship. Both side were under strength but the ’Millers’ had a real cutting edge which ultimately proved the difference between the two sides. There was a good tempo to the game and Lee Riley’s men never gave up - it was nice to seen both sets of fans and officials applauding the teams as they left the field. I personally felt our performance would have earned us maximum points on another night against different opposition. Today’s visitors progressed in the FA Vase courtesy of a hard fought victory against fellow Division One outfit Abbey Hey. Oldham found themselves 2-0 down with just a minute of normal time remaining in the replay (after the first game finished 0-0) but last gasp goals from O’Sullivan (89) and Hughes (90) sent the game into extra time an it was Tom Hughes who struck within two minutes of the re-start to complete a stunning comeback. No doubt our visitors will want to take that attitude into today’s game and will provide another tough hurdle for Town to overcome. The winners of today’s encounter will go into Monday’s draw (subject to extra time and any possible replay)! Interestingly, as we temporarily part company with our Rugby League counterparts Boro have recently entered a partnership with Oldham RLFC at the Whitebank Stadium - let’s hope it proves to be a fruitful relationship. Match Report Tuesday 28th September 2010 Vodkat League, Premier Division - St Helens Town 2-4 New Mills Town fell to their first defeat of the season at Atherton Collieries, Alder Street at the hands of League leaders New Mills this evening. The early stages saw the hosts have plenty of possession without looking too dangerous in the final third with the firepower of Liam Pearson and Iain Dyson both unavailable for selection. An early cross from Daniel Mahoney towards Daley Woods just evaded the striker and the visiting stopper claimed the ball. At the other end Leon Grandison had an effort cleared off the line by Luke Faulkner before moments later the visitors opened the scoring. Josh Ford’s cut inside from the right of the area and his shot was blocked by a Town defender but broke kindly for Grandison to slot the loose ball home. Matters could have been worse on 23 minutes when a left wing corner broke to Grandison and his effort was cleared off the line by Faulkner at full stretch when the striker looked certain to score. At the other end Ian Frazer played an excellent through ball and Woods rounded his defender before collecting the ball and poking the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper the ball rolled in what looked like slow motion before nestling in the net off the inside of the right hand upright. With 36 minutes played Marc Stephens received the ball centrally and advanced goalwards his effort from the edge of the box took a deflection off a defender and made the collection easier for Ingram-Hughes in the New Mills goal. After a spell of Town pressure it was New Mills who ended up scoring Grandison latched onto a through ball from what looked like an offside position and found the bottom left hand corner of the net. The visitors could have gone in at the interval with a two goal lead but for a great save from Dale Newbrook and Ford missing a sitter. Grandison was denied by Newbrook who again showed his worth to the Town cause before the loose ball was chested down by Ford and his effort at an open goal struck the crossbar and the danger was cleared. The game was over as a contest by the hour mark as New Mills netted twice before the hour mark. Right back Mike Bowler found the freedom of the right wing before his cross into the box caused problems, Newbrook could not get a decisive touch and the ball struck Carlos Meakin on the side for a fortuitous third goal for the Millers. The fourth goal came as a result of a flowing move with this visitors moving the ball at pace it culminated in Grandison’s crossing into the stride of Dave Swarbrick who made no mistake to put the game beyond the hosts. In the closing stages Town had plenty of possession and indeed netted a second goal, the first time New Mills have conceded two goals in the league this season. Marc Stephens sent a free kick into the box which Ben Kay headed back towards goal and Mike Deakin headed the ball past the keeper. Despite further pressure the hosts could not net again and the Millers ran out winners. St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town Football Club 1946 - present

The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside

area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at

. . . A Brief History Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.

St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann (pictured right), who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago last season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes (pictured right below) was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil (pictured opposite), who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games to pull clear of the relegation zone.

The close season saw Bickerstaffe step down and Lee Riley promoted to manager. A number of new faces have joined the club and this combination of youth and experience will be looking to improve on last season’s impressive ninth position and success in the cup competitions. The Knowsley Road ground is being demolished this autumn, necessitating a temporary move to Ashton Town, but August 2011 will see the club re-locate to the new stadium, sharing once again with Saints rugby league club.

Steve Prescott’s Engage Mutual Challenge

The Steve Prescott Foundation is delighted to announce its next amazing challenge - five marathons in five days ahead of this year’s Engage Super League Grand Final. Of these five marathons, Steve Prescott himself will run four in four days, with the fifth marathon being opened up to fans on the day of the final. The inspirational Steve Prescott MBE, is keen to add this challenge to an already impressive portfolio of physical feats and hopes that fans will get behind his latest fundraising endeavours. This epic challenge aims to raise a significant amount of funds for The Foundation Steve set up back in 2007, benefiting two charities close to his heart; The Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he receives treatment for a rare cancer, and the Try Assist Fund which supports those seriously injured whilst playing rugby league.

Following his ultra marathon, Steve is challenging rugby league fans to run a collective 26 miles of their own in the Grand Final Fanzone at Old Trafford. Engage Mutual will be hosting this fifth marathon in their Health & Fitness area on Saturday 2nd October, where a treadmill will be in place for fans to run a sponsored leg of the final marathon. To be involved, participants need to sign up on the SPF website, www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk. Spaces are limited, but there are other ways to show support for the event, either by cheering the various runners on before they head to their seats for the Engage Super League season finale, or by making a donation. St Helens Town have launched a brand new sponsorship package for the 2010-11 season which will see one lucky participant drive away a brand new Toyota Aygo worth almost £9000. The package forms part of the club’s main sponsorship deal with Bootle based car dealership Johnsons Toyota Liverpool who have donated the car and who will be assisting the club in promoting the event across the region. In addition to raising funds for the senior and junior St Helens Town teams the

sponsorship project will be supporting local charity The Steve Prescott Foundation who will receive 50% of all profits. Town Chairman John McKiernan said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the club’s profile as well as some much need funds for the whole club and The Steve Prescott Foundation. Dale Newbrook: Signed at the start of the 2010-11 season as cover from Kevin Woods but has already made the number one jersey his own. Played against Town for West Didsbury and Chorlton FC in a pre-season friendly fixture. A great shot stopper who commands his area extremely well. Vodkat League Premier Division 'Goalkeeper of the Month' for August 2010 Kevin Woods: Very good young goalkeeper who is now in his third season with the club. Last season he battled for the keeper's jersey with Graeme McCall and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Stephen Ben Kay: Another player starting his second season with the club after signing from Wigan Robin Park. Can play centre back or midfield and has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. The 2009-10 Players Player of the Year and rewarded with the captaincy for season 2010-11. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club in 2008-09 season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. John will be looking to improve his disciplinary record. Iain Dyson: Former Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club's top goalscorer last term for the third time in four seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Luke Faulkner: Twenty two year old central defender who joined the club last season from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Definitely one to watch!

Town Pen Pictures . . . Liam Pearson: Joined in the summer from Ford Motors, a prolific goal scorer in the Liverpool County Premier League. A big strong centre forward who is good in the air and with the ball at his feet and he will prove to be a handful for opposition defenders. Paul Cliff: Another young player who joined during the close season from neighbours Prescot Cables where he was a regular in their Unibond side. Paul plays on the left wing and has an eye for goal as his pre-season games showed. Marc Stephens: Young midfield player who has had a fine couple of seasons at Town. Signed in the summer of 2008 he came into his own when moved into central midfield where his movement and passing ability are a real quality. He has had a excellent start to the 2010-11 season with goals being added to his repertoire! Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club last season. After some early substitute appearances he's now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who's good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club last season after spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR and Wigan Robin Park. Liam Arnold: A new signing from local outfit Windle Labour FC where he was top scorer in the Warrington Premier Division in season 2009-10. Good pace and creativity have been a highlight of his early season form for Town Lee Owens: A strong and deceptively agile central defender who joined from Prescot Cables during the summer 2010. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defenders and beat them before

sending quality crosses into the box. The 2009-10 Young Player of the Year. Karl Aldridge: Right sided defender or midfield player who is another of the crop of summer signings. Now a regular following a pre-season shoulder injury which kept him out of the team’s opening games of the season. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. He has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian spent much of last season recovering from injury. Former Stockport and Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Dave Garnell: Tall and strong central defender who also has an eye for goal. A great presence in both penalty boxes, signed this summer from Prescot Cables. Daniel Mahoney: A goal-scoring midfielder who joined from Chester FC in September 2010. Good pace and excellent on the ball. His dad Mac also played for Town in the 1990s.

Daley Woods: A speedy front man who has a great first touch and an eye for the spectacular goal. Joined the club during the close season 2010 from Prescot Cables. Phil Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington two seasons ago for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Lee Riley: Joined the club two seasons ago as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition to the club, stepping up to become manager this season. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables and also had a playing spell with Town. Phil Burton: Joined the club during the close season as Assistant Manager to Lee Riley having been manager of the Prescot Cables Reserves. A well qualified coach who has had previous playing spells with Whiston Cross, Prescot Cables and Altrincham

The 1987 FA Vase Final - St. Helens Town v Warrington Town It's now 24 seasons since the teams walked out at the old Wembley Stadium for the FA Vase Final. St. Helens won the game 3-2 before a rather modest crowd of 4,254, due in no small part to the fact that Saints were due to meet Halifax in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at the same venue only seven days later. For St. Helens Town, it was a long, hard road to Wembley that season, having to play 11 games (against Warrington's seven) to reach the Final. Beginning in the extra-preliminary round, they were taken to extra-time before beating Colne Dynamoes (who would win the Vase themselves the following season) 5-4 at Hoghton Road. There then followed home victories over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, before they made the long journey to Wisbech Town, who were beaten 2-0. A 4-1 home victory over Rainworth Miners Welfare set up a home quarter-final against Falmouth Town which ended all-square at 1-1. The long trip to Cornwall for the replay produced a 1-0 victory. The two-legged semi-final against Emley began

disastrously, Town losing the home leg 0-1, but a 2-0 win in West Yorkshire was enough to secure the Wembley date. Warrington began in the Second Round, by virtue of reaching the semi-finals the previous season. A trip to Louth United yielded a 4-2 win, then there were consecutive home victories over Barrowash Victoria, Gresley Rovers and, after extra-time, Vauxhall Motors. Extra-time was required again in the 6th Round at Haverhill Rovers and Warrington won both legs of their semi-final against Collier Row. Warrington produced a commemorative brochure to mark the occasion. They played in yellow shirts and blue shorts, whilst St. Helens appeared in blue shirts and white shorts. St. Helens Town's usual colours were blue and white,

right up to their move to Knowsley Road in 2000, when the decision was taken to switch to red and white stripes. The referee was Mr. Trelford Mills of Barnsley. St. Helens Town team was Johnston, Benson, Wilson, Lowe, Bendon, Cummins, O’Neil, Collins (sub. Gledhill), Rigby, McComb and Layhe. The manager was Alan Wellens. Warrington Town, managed by Dave Taylor, were represented by O'Brien, Gratton, Reid, Hunter, Copeland, Cook, Hughes, Kinsey, Brownbill (sub. Woodyer), Looker (sub. Hill) and Whalley. Ian Kinsey and Jimmy Woodyer were former St. Helens Town players. The final itself began at a breathtaking pace. St. Helens captain Tommy O'Neil, ex-Manchester United and 35 years old, set up the first goal after only 4 minutes when, after chasing Barry Lowe’s through ball, he crossed from the left to enable Phil Layhe to head home. Layhe himself crossed from the right four minutes later for Brian Rigby to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Warrington played much better after the interval and Ian Reid reduced the arrears after 54 minutes. Phil Layhe restored the two-goal advantage shortly afterwards with his ninth goal of the Vase campaign before Neil Cook scored for Warrington a minute from time to set up a tense finish. However, St. Helens hung on at the end and it was a proud Tommy

O'Neil who climbed the 39 steps to receive the Vase from the FA's chief guest, the former Arsenal centre-forward and Chelsea manager, Ted Drake.

Town in the FA Vase . . . Saturday 18th September 2010 FA Vase, 2nd Qualifying Round St Helens Town 4-0 Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Town advanced to the first round proper of the FA Vase with a businesslike victory over Northern Counties East League, Division One Worsbrough Bridge Athletic this afternoon at Alder Street. The early stages saw plenty of pressure from the home side with Marc Stephens, Daley Woods and Iain Dyson all ending moves with efforts at goal but with the first two failing to hit the target and Dyson’s header being held by Liam McFadyen in the visitors goal. The deadlock was broken on 19 minutes when Woods advanced down the left and cut into the box before unleashing an effort which was blocked and he was first to react to the loose ball turning it home to put the hosts into a deserved lead. The remainder of the half was to see Town press the visitors with little reciprocal pressure at the other end. Dyson was in the thick of the action as he first had a header saved by the goalkeeper before he latched onto a loose ball in the box before volleying over from 15 yards after a Woods cross was half cleared. With the half drawing to a close Stephens almost released Liam Pearson but for a well time interception from Chris Hilton and in added on time a right wing free kick found Luke Faulkner and the centre back saw his powerful central header held by the keeper. The hosts started the second half quickly and the tie was effectively over ten minutes after the restart. An early attack was started when Stephens won the ball and released Dyson he advanced down the right and his goalbound effort took a nick off a defender struck the upright and went behind for a corner from which the ball was delivered and Faulkner stooped low to head home and double the advantage. More good work from Stephens this time on the right saw him beat his marker before squaring the ball towards Pearson and the August Player of the Month took a touch before powering the ball home to put the tie beyond the visitors from Yorkshire. In between these two goals the visitors had a great chance to pull a goal back when the ball fell to Dean Sidebottom 25 yards out but his effort was well held by the previously underemployed Dale Newbrook in the Town goal. Further pressure saw substitute Paul Cliff provide an excellent first time ball through for Dyson and his effort on the stretch went just over the bar. At the other end Sidebottom delivered a left wing free kick into the area which Wayne Lloyd rose to meet and it took a superb close range reflex save from the Town stopper to keep the visitors off the score sheet. The final quarter of an hour of the contest saw the hosts pressing in an effort to add to their advantage. Mike Deakin did well beating a couple of defenders coming infield from the right before finding Cliff on the right and his effort went just wide of the left hand post. Dyson and Deakin both spurned chances to add a fourth for Town before the latter tried his luck from 20 yards out and got a break as the powerful effort appeared to go under the goalkeeper as he dived and secured advancement if there was any doubt remaining. Vodkat League News New Goalposts At Surrey Street One of Glossop North End's most loyal sponsors has presented the club with new goalposts and nets for the Surrey Street ground. Not content with raising money for charity with a recent veterans football match at Surrey Street raising around £1000, generous Eugene Gallagher has dipped into his own pocket to provide the club with the new posts. The previous posts were getting a little rusty and ready for replacement, and Eugene was quick on the scene to offer help, adding on the new blue and white striped nets that he hopes Glossop players will fill with goals over the course of the season. Eugene, and his company Delta Force, have been providing free security for the Hillmen, since responding to a desperate call for help a few years ago after the club suffered another break-in. Since then he, and his dogs Bobby and Toby, have become popular characters at the club, and can often be seen taking in games on a match day. North End are exceptionally grateful to Eugene and his colleagues for their generosity and work at the club. In the photo above Eugene Gallagher, Operations Manager of Delta Force Security Ltd, is pictured with GNE groundsman Barry Jones and the new goalposts and nets kindly supplied by Eugene.

Update On ‘Cotto’ League Management Committee member John Cotton reports that he is continuing to make good progress as he recovers from his cancer treatment. Cotto said: "The war wounds are healing nicely and I'm now having daily treatment at home. From next week I have to go to the walking wounded clinic, every day for the next three weeks, for my treatment. "I've got dates with the surgeon and the cancer man in the next month, and then I'll get a date for my once a week a chemo treatment, to kill off any cancer that might have been left behind.

"You get really tired so I've not been able to get out much, but at least now I can manage to walk to the local shop to get a paper every day. I've been watching plenty of telly, and I've got Sky Sports in the bedroom, so I've watched just about every football and cricket match that they've shown over the past few weeks. It's hard being cooped up though, you feel liek a caged lion. "I did manage to get down to Newcastle Town to see the lads briefly, but I won't be at a game for a while yet. My next target is to see my grandson Mitchell playing for Town's under 11s team. I've managed to go down and watch him training but I've not seen him play yet, so that is one of my aims in the next few months. "For now though, I'm confined to the house most of the time although I've got plenty of time to keep in touch with what is going on everywhere. On Saturday afternoons, I've got the telly on watching the vidiprinter, I've got (Newcastle Town Secretary) Ray Tatton ringing me to tell me how Town are getting on, and I've got the computer on the Vodkat League Twitter site so I can see all the updates coming through.

Around The Grounds Keighley Road - Silsden

Our longest league trip saw us take the trip over the boarder into Yorkshire to visit Silsden’s “new” facility on Keighley Road. This is the original home of the club and where they played before the move to groundshare at Keighley Cougars an arrangement which ended in acrimonious circumstances last season. The clubs committee started work to raise funds in order to bring Silsden home and get the ground up to Vodkat League standards a campaign that was successful and saw the club able to start the season at home.

The site is a shared facility between the football club and Silsden Cricket Club with the cricket pitch on the left as you enter the facility and the football ground on the right with the clubhouse in the between. The site also has another pitch behind the main pitch which is played on by the clubs reserve side. The clubhouse is first class and we were able to settle in and watch the end of the Everton Vs Manchester United game in comfortable surroundings. The building similar to the site has its cricket changing rooms off to the right and the football facilities to the left with the bar itself in the middle. The ground has all of its structures on the entrance side of the ground with the main stand housing all the seating in the ground and after a gap which is filled by the tea hut and committee room there is another stand which houses covered terracing (a stand which was filled with Town flags on our visit). Around the remainder of the ground runs hard standing. The outstanding work put in by the clubs committee over the summer is magnificent and the ground whilst still not completed is a credit to their endeavour. I am sure that on our next visit the ground will have improved again as Silsden relish being back home.

All Our Yesterdays . . . Having now played our last fixture at Knowsley Road, it is opportune to look back on the various grounds used by the club. The original St. Helens Town played their home games on the Primrose Ground, Park Road. The ground was used in later years as a greyhound track and survived until the 1980s, when it was demolished and replaced with Social Services facilities and re-named Mulcrow Close. The headquarters of the club were the Black Horse Hotel, Park Road, until the club closed down in 1928. When the club was re-formed after the Second World War, its patrons purchased the site of the former Sutton Cricket Club, later used as allotments, at Hoghton Road, Sutton, adjacent to the St. Helens Junction railway station. The headquarters were, for a time, the Junction Inn, which still stands. The club used what became known as the Town Ground from 1947 until 2000, when title was transferred to Sporting Club St. Helens Limited, the organisation which became the parent company of St. Helens Rugby Football Club Limited and St. Helens Town Limited. The ground was eventually sold for

housing and the substantial sale proceeds were placed at the disposal of Sporting Club St. Helens and put towards the acquisition and building costs of the new St. Helens stadium, which is currently taking shape on the Link Road and which is due for completion in around 12 months’ time. During the intervening period, of course, Town will share Ashton Town’s facilities at Edge Green Street, whilst the Saints will groundshare at Widnes. Town’s ground at Hoghton Road opened for Liverpool County Combination Football on 30th August 1947 when around 2000 spectators saw Town and Newton

YMCA fight out a 1-1 draw. The following season, on 9th October 1948, a ground record of 3012 witnessed the game with Burscough, although a larger crowd assembled for the friendly with Manchester City in April 1950, generally quoted at 4000. The Hoghton Road ground was built from scratch, first of all was the erection of the pavilion. By November 1949, with Town in the Lancashire Combination, the ground had seated accommodation for 250 and cover for over 1300 standing spectators and a small clubhouse was built in 1958, incorporating an office and dressing-rooms. A social club with room for 200 customers appeared in 1962, extended twice to accommodate over 700 by 1977 and floodlights were installed in 1988, following Town’s success in the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 1987. A friendly match against Everton was the first game under

. . . Town Grounds 1946 - the lights on 25th October 1988. Between 1990 and 1994, Town shared the ground with Runcorn Highfield (later Highfield) Rugby League club. Town’s last match at Hoghton Road was against Vauxhall Motors on 29th April 2000. In November 1952, Town moved their operation to City Road, which they shared with Pilkingtons Recreation. City Road was the former ground of St. Helens Recs. Rugby League Club and the ground had previously been used for football when the Recs. fielded an association side between 1898 and 1913. Recs. Rugby League ran from 1913 as an amateur club and between the Wars, they played as a professional club in the

Northern Union and Rugby Football League, often more successfully than Saints. The parent club pulled the funding at the end of the 1938/39 season and the ground was unused during the War. Town played there before some encouraging crowds before re-locating to Hoghton Road in October 1953. Town’s first game at City Road was a Liverpool Senior Cup tie against Stonycroft (which Town won 8-1) on 29th November 1952 and the final game was a 4-0 league win against Prescot Cables on 10th October 1953. Knowsley Road has been used for North West Counties Football for the last 10 seasons. The first game was against Skelmersdale United on 23rd August 2000, the final game being the FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Glossop North End on 28th August 2010. On occasions when the stadium has not been available, Town have used various other local grounds, notably Prescot Cables for league games and holding some friendly games at Ashton Town and Bobbies Lane, Eccleston. In recent weeks, two FA Vase matches have been played at tonight’s venue, Alder House, the home of Atherton Collieries. The record crowd at Knowsley Road was the 1723 attendance for the visit of FC United of Manchester on 12th August 2006. GLYN JONES

A look back at Hoghton Road 1946 A consortium of Sutton businessmen led by Mr George Fryer purchased the one time Sutton Cricket Club site from Pilkington Brothers, to re-form St Helens Town AFC. Extensive work is required to re-cultivate the pitch whilst essential buildings are erected from timber supplied by the local collieries. 1948 Supporters Club secure their own premises with the purchase of a timber building from RAF Haydock, which also acts as a refreshment bar. 1949 Supporters raise money to build a grandstand at a cost of £1000 whilst residue of the money is put into further development. Construction is subject to struct new legislation enforced by the close vicinity of the railway and concern for public safety following the pre-war disaster at Burnden Park, Bolton. hence a heavy duty concrete structure is specified. 1953 The whole estate is put up for sale whilst the team play home games at Pilkington's City Road ground. 1954 The sale is withdrawn due to pressure group led by Mr George Fryer. 1958 Small clubhouse incorporating officials dressing rooms and an office is erected. 1962 New 200 seater club is built on top of the training pitch. Burnley's ex-St Helens Town star John Connelly performs the opening ceremony. 1966 The club is extended, incorporating dressing rooms and a lounge area. 1972 Further extension of the club includes the relocation of both dressing rooms and stage. Liverpool's Ian St. John performs the opening ceremony. 1977 A new lounge is added plus a sauna build into the new dressing room block which also houses a new games and snooker facility. A running tack is laid around the pitch.

1978 The ground is completely walled in. 1982 Final phase of the club development is completed with a new roof and new toilet blocks. Covered accommodation built at the Hoghton Road end of the ground to enclose the refreshment bar. Sauna sold off. 1983 Elevated Director's box built over looking the pitch at the Hoghton Road end of the ground. 1984 New players' entrance constructed. 1988 Floodlighting system installed after months of fund-raising. Everton send a strong side to officially open the lights. Salford City are the first team to play Town under floodlights at Hoghton Road. 1990 Runcorn Highfield Rugby League Football Club outfit become tenants at Hoghton Road. 1994 Runcorn Highfield RLFC move to Prescot Cables and St Helens Greyhound Company join Town as tenants. Significant changes are made to the Hoghton Road ground as a new track is laid around the pitch. 1995 Players' entrance 'caged-in' as part of new FA ground Grading requirements. 1996 Floodlighting system upgraded and a new exterior wall is erected. Dressing rooms are upgraded. The ground is used as a location for an episode of the BBC hit comedy/drama series 'Common As Muck' 2000 The final game is played on Hoghton Road when Champions elect are beaten 1-0. St Helens Town relocate to Saints' Knowsley Road and the land is sold to Barratt Homes.

A young cowboy in the Wild West has dreams of becoming the best gunslinger around. Passing through Deadwood one afternoon, he decides to call in at the saloon for a drink and settles himself down at a table with a bottle of whisky. Casting his eye around the saloon, he sees there is a man dressed in black playing a piano in the corner, and also recognises an old man with the reputation of being the greatest gunfighter of his day, sitting alone at another table. The youngster picks up his whisky, strolls over to the old timer, and offers him a drink. With his hospitality accepted, he engages the old man in conversation and soon confesses his dream of becoming the best gunfighter of all time. The old

man looks him up and down for a few moments. “Well, if you’re so determined, I have one or two suggestions that are sure to help,” he offers. “Please tell me,” begs the youngster, excitedly. “For a start, tie the bottom of your holster lower down on your leg,” says the old man. “Will that make me a better gunfighter?” enquires the youngster. “Definitely,” replies the old man. The youngster unties and adjusts his holster as instructed, then draws his gun and shoots the bow tie off the piano player. “Wow, that really made a difference,” he beams. “Do you have any more suggestions?” he asks. “Yeah,” replies the old man. “If you cut a notch in the top of your holster where the hammer rests, it will prevent any risk of snagging and your gun will come out smoother,” he explains. “And will that make me an even better gunfighter?” demands the youngster. “It sure will,” replies the old man. The youngster takes a knife and cuts a notch in the top of his holster, replaces his gun, draws it again, and shoots the cufflink off the piano player’s sleeve. “Wow, this is really helping me a lot,” he says. “Is there anything else you can share with me?” he continues. “Just one more thing,” replies the old man, sagely. “Get that can of axle grease from over there in the corner and rub it all over your gun.” Without hesitation, the youngster obeys the instruction and starts to cover the barrel of his gun in axle grease. “No, the whole gun,” instructs the old man. “Barrel, butt, trigger - everything. And, when you’ve done that, empty all the bullets out and leave them on the table for safety. Make sure that every chamber is empty. The youngster looks puzzled. “How can that possibly help me in a gunfight?” he asks. “It won’t,” replies the old man. “But it won’t hurt as much.” The youngster looks horrified. “What won’t hurt as much?” he asks, his voice trembling. “Well, replies the old man, a smile spreading over his face. “When Wyatt Earp finishes playing the piano, he’s going to shove that gun up your backside!” Compiled and edited by John Shepherd (Sheffield FC) with cartoon by Paula Shepherd.
