Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Padiham. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Padiham to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. Town are looking to bounce back this afternoon after a poor result at Glossop North End last Saturday when one of the most decisive decisions of the afternoon was the home side winning the toss and playing with the sun at their backs during the first half. The hosts took an early lead thanks to an over hit cross that Graeme McCall lost in the sun. Town levelled from the spot through Ben Kay, after Rob Hanley had been felled by the keeper who astonishingly managed to stay of the field. Things were to get worse for Town as they saw themselves 5-1 down after 75 minutes before Iain Dyson added a late consolation. Since we were last here against New Mills we also visited Squires Gate and left with all three points after an excellent display. Rob Hanley netted an excellent first half brace before Mike Fargher was given his marching orders and an excellent rearguard display saw the visitors ensuring the points with a 2-1 victory. This afternoons visitors are making their first visit to Knowsley Road although the sides have met twice recently in Cup ties with Padiham running out winners in both ties including knocking Town out of this season’s FA Vase with a 4-3 win. Padiham secured an excellent 1-0 victory over Congleton Town this past Saturday with an added on time goal to take the spoils. Gary and the lads will know they will need to on top form if they are get back to winning ways and gain a little bit of revenge for the FA Vase exit in September. This afternoon sees the start of sequence of games that could go a long way to defining how successful Town will be this season and I am sure a few wins will make all the difference! Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier

Division encounter with our first time visitors, friends and rivals Padiham FC. Let’s hope their

players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support

have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter!

It’s been a mixed bag of results since the enforced weather break with two wins and two

defeats from our four outings. Since our last home fixture against New Mills, which saw the

lads suffer a 4-0 reverse, we’ve been on the road with a trip to Squires Gate a couple of weeks

ago which turned into a thrilling encounter. Two first half quality strikes from Rob Hanley put

us comfortably in the lead but the dismissal of Mike Fargher was to put the lads under

significant pressure during the final 35 minutes or so. A late ‘Gate’ goal and a lengthy period

of stoppage time had us all biting our nails but we held on to avenge the earlier home defeat

by the seasiders.

Last Saturday we made the journey across to Glossop North End and a beautiful sunny

afternoon was to conspire against us as Town went down to a 5-2 defeat. Our hosts played

very well, especially in the second half but they made the most of the blinding sun as Graeme

McCall ‘lost’ the ball on two occasions and was embarrassed to see the ball nestle in the back of

the net from what appeared to be harmless crosses! Glossop made it to the break 3-1 ahead

with Town having earlier equalised through Ben Kay’s penalty - on reflection this was another

turning point as the referee could have easily chosen to dismiss North End’s ’keeper rather

than issue a yellow card! A fine break-away goal and a penalty against Neil Jones added to score with a late header from Iain Dyson ending the game in style for Town.

We welcome Padiham for the first time to Knowsley Road but it’s not the first time our two

clubs have met. Earlier this season today’s visitors knock us out of the FA Vase at the Arbories

ground courtesy of a 4-2 victory. Previously in 2007, as NWCFL Division 2 side, Padiham

ousted Town from the League Challenge Cup with a 2-0 home victory and going back to our

Lancashire Combination Division 2 days there were regular battles which Town seemed to

slightly edge (10 meetings, Town 6 wins, Padiham 4 wins). Let’s hope we can take some home

advantage and the spoils this afternoon!

Congratulations to Phil Mitchell and his partner who last week celebrated the arrival of a new

baby boy - hopefully Phil will be in action this afternoon, it’ll be a distraction from nappy

changes!!!

Our congratulations go to Rob Hanley who has been voted the club’s Player of the Month for

January 2010 and he will receive his Toyota car (for a week) in due course!

Our next game sees the lads travel to Bootle next Tuesday evening before two more home

fixtures. Next Saturday Bacup Borough will make the trip to Knowsley Road as they attempt to make up ground in their league programme and on Tuesday 23 February we entertain Wigan

Robin Park in the Vodkat League Cup quarter finals - I am on the look-out for a match and

In Town Today . . . It might be hard to imagine today but in the

immediate years following the establishment of

Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the

"Caldersiders" as they were then known were

considered one of Lancashire's soccer pioneers and

one of the better Club sides in England.

The Padiham Football Club were in at the birth of the

Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup

competition in 1879 , reached the third round proper

of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1

and 4-2 in their first four encounters.

Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like

Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to

Padiham F.C.'s ground which was

originally situated on the banks of the

River Calder at the end of Wyre Street

in Padiham and initially leased from the

Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall.

At present the site is occupied by the

Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas

factory and nothing remains of the

Clubs original ground which witnessed

many encounters with Clubs that later

achieved Football League status. In fact

it was the setting up of the Football

League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well

as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended

Padiham's initial decade of success.

Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the

legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham's progressive outlook

at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance

came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to

an ongoing fight for survival.

Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger

surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced

income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the



. . . Padiham FC Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor

leagues

The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club's

involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915- 1916

season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham

Football Club lay dormant until after the end of World War Two when

they were reformed.

The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the

opening of the "Arbories " Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on

August 20th 1949 when 1777 spectators turned up to see the Club's

opening Lancashire Combination

fixture of the 1949- 50 football

season.

In 1982 , Padiham Football Club

became founder members of the

North West Counties Football

League , however in 1990 they

left the league and joined the

West Lancashire Football League

where they played their football

for ten seasons. Padiham

Football Club returned to the

North West Counties Football

League for the 2000- 2001 season and to date have spent over

£400,000 on upgrading their "Arbories" Memorial Football Ground.

Padiham’s period back in the North West Counties League saw them

initially consolidate their position with a couple of mid table finishes

before their third season saw them finish fourth. A blip occurred in the

2003/4 when they finished 12th.

The 2004/5 season saw Padiham start a period where they challenged

for promotion finishing fourth, fifth and third just missing out on

promotion. Another blip saw them finish in twelfth position before last

season’s runners-up spot saw them get to the promised land of the

Premier Division this term.

Vodkat League News Update On Cotto Newcastle Town's John Cotton is now confined to barracks for a couple of weeks as he continues his cancer treatment. Phase two of his treatment is about to begin which will mean he can't attend any games, but Cotto was able to get down to the Lyme Valley

Stadium last Saturday for the game against Padiham. He says he was overwhelmed by the reception he got when he arrived. "Loads of people were there who I knew, and everyone

seemed surprised to see me. I'd like to thank everyone who took time to talk to me and wish me all the best. Our Commercial Manager Geoff Eccleston has christened me John "Chemo" Cotton, and I reckon club officials were pleased I'd turned up because bar takings have taken a dip since I've been missing". Elsewhere on the website, in a separate story John is pictured with fellow

club stalwarts Len Matthews and Brenda Bowden as they received their FA long service awards before the game, suitably attired in headgear for the occasion (see picture above).

"Len said it was no surprise that I turned up, as he reckons I end up in every picture from Town that ends up in the media. He said that once I knew there was a photo opportunity I'd turn up like a bad penny and get in on it. Looking at the pictures now, a suitable description of me would be the prat in the hat, but in my defence it was a cold day on Saturday". (Cotto actually suggested another word similar to prat, but editorial censorship had to be applied).

In the short term Cotto is resigning himself to following Town's fortunes from home for a week or so. "The doctors' have upped the strength of my tablets, which means I'll miss the games against Maine Road and Congleton, but hopefully I'll be able to get to the away game at Ashton Athletic on the

13th. Between now and then, I'll have to keep tabs on what's going on from home, by logging on to the League's Twitter site and ringing Ray Tatton (Town's secretary) during games.

"I had a nice surprise a week or two back when I got a letter from Sean McCarthy, who is one of the club's Vice Presidents. He is out in Malta now, but he saw the story about me on the league website and wrote a nice letter reminiscing about old times. If anyone else out there fancies ringing me up for a natter about football while I'm stuck at home for the next week or so, I'd be delighted to hear from them".

Around The Grounds Church Lane – New Mills

Halfway up a mountain lays the Town of New Mills, a Town which sees a lot of its community based around its football team. In fact typing New Mills into Google

presents you with opening results containing nothing about tourist information or local landmarks, just the football team. New Mills FC’s home of Church Lane is a somewhat basic facility compared with other grounds in the Premier Division and beyond. A basic non league ground really,

with a covered stand containing both seats and standing down one side of the pitch, whilst the rest of it is open to the elements and it’s all neatly

contained down one side with a perimeter fence. The clubhouse and changing room facilities are present at the top end of the ground, with the clubhouse being of medium size for a club at this level. For those that don’t prefer the standard seats in a ground or to watch a game standing, New Mills have taken the added step of installing picnic tables at the top end of their ground. So why not bring a lunchbox and a flask of hot water to your next visit there and keep an eye out for Yogi Bear. One upside to the place though, if the match is boring you can always take a step back and drink in the stunning scenery that this part of the world offers. On the whole, it’s pretty much non league average, caters for

most viewing tastes and allows you to get up close to the action. A bit of a fresher look might have scored it slightly higher, but it’s a respectable score for an ambitious team that believes they should be higher up the pyramid than they are currently. Overall score: 5/10



St Helens Town AFC . . . Re-formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground.

The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953 and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league

ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby.



. . . A Brief History Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was

transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Introduction to the . . . Graeme McCall: Keeper in his second spell at the club after rejoining in the close season. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keeper’s jersey. Kevin Woods: Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets.

Neil Jones: Commanding centre half now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke: Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias: Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Rob Hanley: Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Iain Dyson: Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the club’s top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell: Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond, had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell: Brother of Graeme, followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Adam Gilchrist: Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield. Marc Stephens: Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Dougie Pitts: Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere.



St. Helens Town squad Ian Frazer: Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Mark Evans: Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen ‘Ben’ Kay: Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Fargher: Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Nick McLoughlin: Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Paul Monteith: Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Peter Birch: Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possesses good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces. Luke Faulkner: Seventeen year old central defender who has recently joined the club from Mid-Cheshire outfit Garswood United. Has composure beyond his years which has been evident across a number of excellent performances for club. Brian Hatton: The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Lee Riley: Joined the club last season as assistant to Gary Bickerstaffe and has proved a popular addition. A strong central defender who has had significant experience with Warrington Town and Prescot Cables. Gary Bickerstaffe: Rejoined the club late last season as manager having had a previous spell as a player in the 1990s. His arrival last term ensured we staved off relegation comfortably with eight wins from our last 11 league encounters. A mid-field dynamo at the height of his playing career Gary has graced a number of clubs including Congleton Town, Winsford United and Bangor City and has been assistant Manager at both Warrington Town and Congleton and Manager at Garswood United. Other squad players include prolific strikers David Burns and Jamie Foster along with Andy Gillespie and Danny Clarke who have all stepped up from St Helens Town Reserve team football so far this season.

Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this afternoon’s Vodkat

North West Counties League Premier Division match against Padiham. May the

travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result.

So after the defeat on this ground to New Mills over a fortnight ago, fortunes

have been mixed for Town as two away days have brought two very different

results. A fortnight ago today saw Town travel to the seaside to take on

Squires Gate and the trip certainly proved to be a pleasant one. A gloriously

sunny but cold day saw Rob Hanley steal the show in terms of an individual

performance as he scored two great goals to send Town into a 2-0 lead, but

the Town defence played collectively superbly to right the wrongs of the New

Mills match and hang on for the victory, despite conceding a goal in injury time

to set up a very nervous finish. An achievement made all the more impressive

by the fact that Town had to hang on with a man less after Mike Fargher had

been dismissed from the field for retaliation. The trip to Glossop last Saturday

though didn’t prove quite as fruitful though as Town would return empty

handed after being on the wrong end of a 2-5 defeat. This was largely down to

two identical flukes of goals from the same player that had Town behind the

eight ball at half time, and the award of a penalty in the 2nd half for a handball

against Neil Jones that looked incredibly suspect. Iain Dyson’s consolation goal

in the dying minutes of the match was worth the trip on its own, a superb

header from a John Elias cross that gave the travelling support something to

smile about.

Onto today’s game now then and the visit of Padiham to Knowsley Road. This

will be the 2nd meeting between the two clubs this season after we met in

September in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Vase. And Town may very

well have a score to settle this afternoon as Padiham knocked Town out of the

Vase at the first hurdle in a 3-4 defeat. A poor first half from Town left them

too much to do in the second half and despite a late fight back and hitting the

crossbar in injury time that had it gone in would have forced extra time, Town

were defeated by the Lancashire side. Today, league action is the focus as

Town look to get back to winning ways after their defeat to Glossop North End

last Saturday but don’t let the league positions fool you, this match is far

tougher than it looks on paper. Town currently have a ten point lead over

today’s visitors but have played four games more, meaning Padiham could

overhaul Town’s position if they take maximum return from all of their games

in hand. Town will be looking to ensure this job gets tougher with a win this

afternoon.

So it’s down to the action once again with Town looking to get another victory

under their belt. Let’s get behind the players this afternoon and hopefully

Vase Performances in the Noughties

With New Mills going out of the FA Vase last weekend, our league is without a representative

in the quarter finals of the competition for only the second time since 1999. In response to a

number of enquiries, here's a list of our best performers in the FA Vase over the past ten

years.

1999-2000 - Mossley lost 3-1 to eventual winners Deal Town in the quarter final.

2000-01 - Clitheroe lost 8-4 on aggregate to eventual winners Taunton Town in the semi

final. After winning 4-3 home, Clitheroe lost 5-0 in the second leg down in Somerset.

2001-02 - Clitheroe lost 2-1 at home to eventual winners Whitley Bay in the quarter final.

2002-03 - Mossley lost 2-0 at home to eventual losing finalists AFC Sudbury in the quarter

final.

2003-04 - Colne lost 4-3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury in the semi final. After a 3-2 defeat

down in Suffolk in the first leg, Colne were held 1-1 at the Holt House Stadium in the second

leg, and AFC Sudbury went on to lose in the final for second year in a row.

2004-05 - Colne lost 3-2 at home to eventual winners Didcot Town in the Fifth

Round. Didcot inflicted a third successive final defeat on AFC Sudbury.

2005-06 - Nantwich Town lifted the Vase with a 3-1

win over Hillingdon Borough at Birmingham City's St

Andrews ground. This was a particularly good year for

our league, with Cammell Laird reaching the semi final (losing 5-0 on aggregate to Nantwich in an all-NWCFL

semi final), and Squires Gate reached the quarter final,

where they lost 2-0 at Hillingdon Borough.

2006-07 - Curzon Ashton lost 3-2 on aggregate to

Truro City in the semi final. After winning 1-0 at the

Tameside Stadium in the first leg, Curzon lost 3-1 in

the second leg down in Cornwall.

2007-08 - Kirkham & Wesham lifted the trophy with a 2-1 win over Lowestoft Town in the

final at Wembley.

2008-09 - Glossop North End fail to make it two in a row for the Vodkat League, going down

2-0 to Whitley Bay in the final at Wembley.

2009-10 - New Mills are the last Vodkat League representatives to go out of the competition,

losing 2-0 to Norton & Stockton Ancients in the Fifth Round.

Vodkat League News Work Starts On Linnets' New Stadium

Work has kicked-off on the new stadium due to be Runcorn

Linnets' new home from the 2010/2011 season - in a

partnership deal with Halton Borough Council after Club

officials signed a 30-year lease on the Council-owned

site. Constructions of the 1,600-capacity Millbank Linnets

Stadium, at Halton Sports in Murdishaw, Runcorn, was

officially launched with with a sod-cutting ceremony on Friday

5th February. The new Ground was named "The Linnets

Stadium" as an overwhelming winner from the poll of Trust

members, receiving 47 of the 100 votes and twice as many as

the second choice on the shortlist of five suggested names.

The new £230,000 facility, funded jointly by Runcorn Linnets FC, Halton

Borough Council, and the Football Foundation will provide a home for the

Linnets, who haven't had a base in the town since the previous club's ground

at Canal Street was sold in 2001. The sale of the old Ground saw Runcorn AFC

become somewhat nomadic until its demise in 2006, whereupon the fans

formed the new Runcorn Linnets FC. Halton Borough Council's Executive

Board Member for Sport, Cllr Phil Harris, said: "Now the club has a home

ground back in Runcorn they can start the hard work of increasing their

supporter base and moving back up the leagues. "They will also add a much

needed boost to the development of open age football in the borough."

The new 1,600 capacity facility will take a couple of months to construct, and

will be the club's full-time home from the start of the 2010/2011 season.

Club Chairman, Derek Greenwood said "This is a momentous day for the club.

To be able to start work on our new ground is something we've been

dreaming of for a number of years now, and it's great to see it finally coming

to fruition.

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town

Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, B u r n l e y ,

Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players. The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team (pictured above) under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Sat 6th Feb 2010 Vodkat Premier Division Glossop NE 5-2 St Helens Town

The trip to Glossop turned out to be a tale of two goalkeepers are Town fell to a

heavy defeat shipping five against Glossop for the second time this season. The

home side won the toss and this was to prove vital as the sun was to be an asset for

the home side in the opening period, an awful start saw Town behind after 8 minutes

an over hit cross from the right by David Young saw Graeme McCall lose it in the sun

and it found its way into the net off the inside of the left hand upright. On 11

minutes Rob Hanley collected a through ball and beat his marker as he was rounding

the keeper he was felled and the referee pointed to the spot, it was a blatant

goalscoring opportunity as the striker had knocked the ball past Cooper and would

have slotted the ball into the empty net. Mr Tankard somehow decided that none of

this was important and produced a yellow card, when it was a red card offence. Ben

Kay stepped up and slotted the ball confidently home past the keeper who should

have been in the shower. The home side responded to this gift horse and almost

regained the lead when Richard Bailey created an opening but his shot went just

wide of the left handed upright. The lead was restored on 26 minutes when Andy

Hurst cut through the Town defence on the left of area and squared for Darren

Hamilton to tap home centrally. Town carved out an opening on 27 minutes when

Mike Fargher linked with Mark Evans and he sent in an excellent cross that Young’s

attempted clearance flicked towards the far post, John Elias collected but failed to hit

the target. On 34 minutes Young found Hurst with a long ball and the striker found

himself 1on1 with McCall but the stopper made himself big and saved well. McCall

was to have another aberration on 40 minutes as another cross from Young on the

right eluded him, again in off the left hand post. Just before the break it could have

been worse as Hurst centred from the left and Hamilton somehow managed to hit the

upright when it seemed easier to score.

The second stanza started with the hosts on top, Kiel O’Brien centred and Hurst hit a shot which hit Neil Jones on the arm from point blank range and Mr Tankard made

another interesting decision by pointing to the spot. Young given the chance to net

his third made no mistake although McCall went the right way and almost denied

him. It was 4-1 on 75 minutes as Richard Bailey released Hurst and he rounded

McCall and slotted home. A Town revival saw Brian Hatton send a corner in from the

right and Dougie Pitts rose highest but could only head over the bar, in the dying

stages Elias did well down the right and sent a pinpoint cross into the box which Iain

Dyson rose and headed into the bottom right hand corner of the net to add a touch

more respectability to the scoreline which could have been different had Mr Tankard

dealt with the first half penalty incident as law dictates.

Caretaker Manager given full appointment. Former Peterborough United midfielder Richard Scott has been appointed manager of Spalding United. Scott, who joined the Tulips in January ‘09 as a player, has been looking after the team as caretaker manager since the resignation of Mark Hone at the beginning of November last year, was offered the manager’s position at an executive meeting of the

club on Thursday evening and readily accepted. Club press officer Ray Tucker said that Scott was one of a number of candidates interviewed for the manager’s job. “And all ticked the right boxes”. “After stepping into the breach following Mark Hone’s departure Richard was guaranteed an eight match sequence in which to prove himself. Throughout that time his enthusiasm and desire to succeed and to maintain the club’s Lever-4 status, have been wholly evident.” “We have every confidence in Richard’s management abilities and look forward to a lasting and successful partnership”. On his appointment Scott said: “From the outset I made it very clear that I wanted the job and

nothing has changed. I want to take the club on to better things”.

Emil on the hunt for Colls information! Work is set to begin soon on a new book outlining the distinguished history of Atherton Collieries. Atherton Collieries Secretary Emil Anderson has decided to take on the task of writing the book, and with the club having been formed in 1916, he's got plenty to go at. Emil and his family have a long association with the club and therefore he is ideally placed to take on the job, but he says that he would still like to hear from former players and officials at the club before he starts the job in earnest. Emil said: "I've begun sorting through all the information I've got already, such as old programmes, newspaper cuttings and handbooks, to try and get it into some sort of order. But when you take on something like this, you want to be sure you don't miss anything important. So I'd like to have as much as possible gathered together before I start.

"There must be many former players and officials and their families who have information, memorabilia and old pictures from the past. If there's anyone out there who has anything related to the club that they think would be of interest, I'd be delighted to hear from them".

As previously reported, the club hopes to take up membership of the Vodkat League next season, and will be playing in the FA Vase for the first time in its history. To help find new sponsors as the club moves forward, Town has put all of its sponsorship packages for next season together and will give them out as prizes to companies who join their "100 Club". Prizes last for two seasons and range from shirt sponsorship and perimeter board advertising to programme sponsorship. Commercial Manager Glyn Davies says "We hope that next season will be massive for the club on and off the pitch. On the pitch we will hopefully be playing at the highest level the club has played at, and in national cup competitions for the first time". Saint’s Alive . . . A couple have been married for forty, stormy years when the wife

suddenly passes away. The funeral is quickly arranged and, at

the end of the service, the pallbearers are carrying the coffin

slowly out of the chapel when they accidentally bump it against

the wall. Almost immediately they hear a faint moan from inside,

and frantically prise open the coffin lid to find that the occupant is

still alive. Following a thorough check-up by baffled doctors she is

given a clean bill of health, and goes on to live for another fifteen

years. Upon the wife’s eventual death the funeral is arranged for

the same place and, when the ceremony is over, the pallbearers

are again carrying the coffin slowly out of the chapel. As they approach the

doorway, the nervous-looking husband calls out, “Mind that wall.”

Seamus and Paddy are on a fishing weekend, and hire a boat to go out on a

popular lake. After they catch their fill in a particularly fruitful session, they

decide to finish for the day and are heading back to the quayside when Seamus

suddenly turns to Paddy and asks, “Did you mark the spot where we caught all

these fish so that we can find it again?” “Certainly,” grins Paddy. “I chalked a

big X on the side of the boat before we left there.” “You idiot,” yells Seamus.

“What makes you think we’ll get the same boat tomorrow?”

A trainee barber nicks a customer badly while giving him a shave. Hoping to

atone for his mistake, he apologises and asks, “Do you want your head

wrapped in a hot towel?” “No thanks,” replies the customer, sighing deeply. “I’ll

just carry it home under my arm.”

Two teenagers are arrested and taken to the local police station, where the

desk sergeant tells them they are entitled to one phone call. Some time later, a

man enters the police station and asks for them. “Are you their solicitor, or a

parent?” demands the sergeant. “Neither,” replies the man, heaving two boxes

onto the desk. “I’m delivering the pizzas.”

With all the tragedies and disasters around the world at the moment, it is worth

reflecting on the sad death of a very important person, which almost went un-

noticed recently. Larry La Prise, the man who wrote The Hokey Cokey, died

peacefully at the age of 93. The most traumatic part of the preparations for his

funeral proved to be the process of actually getting him into the coffin. They

put his left leg in - and then the trouble started.
