Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Carlsberg Vase, First Round tie against our Northern Counties East League colleagues from Parkgate. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant if somewhat familiar trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street having vanquished our landlords Ashton Town in the previous round, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. It has been a fortnight since we welcomed Runcorn Town to Edge Green Street and whilst we turned in an excellent performance against one of the teams expected to challenge for the title we did not get what we deserved and some decisions and breaks went against us and we fell to a 2-0 reverse. We then took the long and difficult trip to Yorkshire to take on Silsden who put us to the sword netting seven goals in the contest with Town’s single reply coming from Shaun Judge around the hour mark. Whilst the score-line looks particularly one sided reports suggest that the contest was closer than this and it was one of those afternoon’s when everything Silsden hit went in and Town were in the wrong place at the wrong time to fall to their heaviest defeat of the season. Our opponents this afternoon are not a new team to us this being the fourth meeting of the sides with the initial meeting coming with a trip to Rotherham in a 2002/3 FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round it took a Town goal deep in added on time to ensure that we did not exit securing a 2-2 draw and won the replay by a 3-1 score-line. The next meeting took place in the 2009/10 season in the same competition at the Extra Preliminary Round as Town again visited Rawmarsh and this time came away with a 3-1 win. This afternoon’s contest will be the first meeting of the sides in the FA Vase. Parkgate have been in excellent form this season having been at the higher reaches of the NCEL Premier Division table for much of the term and the squad know they will be in for a tough contest. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them on to victory and a place in the hat for the Second Round draw on Monday afternoon. Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Parkgate F.C. was formed September 1969 out of the Parkgate Steelworks Wire Department who were four times winners of National Wire Drawers Cup. They joined Division Two of the Hatchard League, losing the first game away to Telephone Sports 3-0. In 1971 joined the Sheffield & Hallamshire County F.A. Senior League then two years late in 1973 joined the Yorkshire League as B.S.C. Parkgate F.C., which, is now the Northern Counties East Football League in which they compete today.

The club was winners of the Rotherham Charity Cup in 1983/1984, 1998/1999 and runners up in 1996/1997. They were runners up in the Mexborough Montagu Hospital Cup in 1979 and 1987 and again in 1991/1992 when they lost 2-1 to fellow Northern Counties East League team Brodsworth Miners Welfare. In 1992 the Club installed floodlights at their Roundwood home ground and David Bassett, then the Manager of Sheffield United, brought along a team for the switch on. The 1997/1998 seasons saw the Club reach the final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Competition, where they lost 3-0 to Emley. They also finished fourth place in the League, their highest place for a number of years. 1998/1999 saw the Club reach the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, where they lost to Yorkshire Amateurs. After Challenging for Promotion all season they finished in fourth place again. 2001/2002 saw Russ Eagle take over as Manager with a lot of new signings the club were hoping for a good season. In March 2002 Russ left to become Assistant Manager at Belper Town. Stewart Evans stepped in to be Manager. Stewart was again appointed Manager for season 2003/04 after a good finish to 2002/03 Season. Season 2003/04 saw the Steelmen finish in eighth place. Manager Stewart Evans and his assistant Vinnie Brady were appointed for season 2004/05 but after a run of bad results Stewart resigned leaving his assistant Vinnie Brady in charge. During the 2005/2006 season the Steelmen finished in sixth position just missing out on a promotion place and lost 2-1 in the final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup to an injury time goal. The 2006/2007 seasons saw Parkgate win the Wilkinson Sword Trophy and the Division One Championship, which saw them promoted to the Premier Division. The great surprise was the resignation of Team Manager Vinnie Brady after a successful season; Parkgate appointed Assistant Manager Russell Eagle to the position of Team Manager ably assisted by his Assistant Manager Darren Grady.

. . . Parkgate Football Club 2007/2008 Parkgate were semi finalist in the League Cup and County FA Senior Cup and finished 8th in the League. Manager Russell Eagle resigned as Manager, as did Assistant Manager Darren Grady at the end of the season to concentrate on business commitments. Parkgate appointed Sean Hutchinson as Manager and Wilf Race as Assistant Manager but at the end of the season Wilf Race resigned his position as Assistant Manager and was appointed the Manager of Hallam FC, Mark Smith was appointed as Assistant Manager at Parkgate FC. Due to a string of poor results and an 8-3 defeat at Hall Road Rangers FC in October 2009 Sean Hutchinson tendered his resignation. The Steelmen moved swiftly and appointed Russell Eagle as Team Manager for his second stint at the Club and Darren Bonnington as Assistant Manager but in June 2010 Russell Eagle resigned as Manager at Parkgate FC to take over as Manager of newly promoted Division One side Handsworth FC. The Steelmen moved swiftly and appointed Douglas Shelley from AFC Celtic, who appointed Wilf Race as his Assistant for Season 2010/2011. The season proved to be the most successful in the clubs history, a new look squad saw the Steelmen finish second in the NCEL Premier and reach the Final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final at Hillsborough. Last season Parkgate enjoyed another successful campaign with a solid top half finish and a good run in the FA Vase. The Steelmen will be looking to progress from last season with Doug bringing in several exciting new players and appointing former Macclesfield Town manager Gary Simpson as his assistant. A Word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for today’s FA Vase first round tie. I would like to welcome today’s visitors Parkgate FC who have travelled from Rotherham, West Yorkshire. Let’s hope they enjoy their visit and have a safe journey home. Today’s game will be tough; Parkgate currently lie 8th in the Northern Counties East League top flight and they picked up a good 2-0 win in the previous round against Landlords Ashton Town. It’s 25 years ago since the biggest achievement in our clubs history. 1987 was the year St Helens Town won this competition courtesy of a 3-2 win against Warrington Town at the old Wembley Stadium in front of 4254 fans. It’s a competition that’s full of tradition and one I know we as a club look very fondly on.

It’s nice to take time out of league competition and play in a great cup. Our League form of late hasn’t been great and the less said about last week’s game at Silsden the better but I will go on record and say the performance was not acceptable and as first team manager can only apologise to the fans who travelled to Silsden and paid good hard earned money to watch that performance or lack of. We knew this season would be hard; from day one we have build a squad from scratch and we know there will be setbacks throughout the season. It’s going to take a lot of hard work to get us where we want to be. Success won’t come overnight it takes time and hard work we are building a squad for the future. We need to forget about last week pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and go again! Luckily for us games come thick and fast and we won’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves today the lads can put last week’s game behind them and with a good positive hardworking performance that I know we are more than capable of. I hope everyone enjoys today’s game and we progress to the next round of this fantastic competition. Ian Granite

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round Proper game against our visitors from the Northern Counties East League, Parkgate FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. Both teams will be looking to make it through next round and along with it secure the £900 prize money on offer. We’ve both had mixed league

results of late with Parkgate losing their last four games - Thackley (0-2), Scarborough Athletic (1-0), Hall Road Rangers (3-2) and Glasshoughton Welfare (2-1). However, Parkgate did register a 4-1 County Cup win over Mexborough Town on Tuesday evening. Parkgate currently lie well placed in 8th position with 22 points from 13 Premier Division games. For Town it’s been a tough week or so with a 0-2 home defeat to last season’s runners-up Runcorn Town, a game which saw the lads play well and battle hard without any reward. Last Saturday we travelled to Silsden with the hope of three points and returned hugely disappointed after a 7-1 drubbing. We thoroughly deserved to lose the game but the score-line was hard to comprehend as our hosts scored some cracking goals and everything they tried seemed to pay off. For our part we were again too generous in defence and lacked any cutting edge in front of goal, despite plenty of chances and a thunderous header from Shaun Judge. Let’s hope there’s a positive response from the players this afternoon! As detailed elsewhere in today’s programme this is not the first time we’ve met with Town making FA Cup progress twice at the expense of our visitors courtesy of a draw and two wins. However, it is our first FA Vase meeting and Parkgate will be hoping Edge Green Street remains a ‘happy hunting ground’ following their 0-2 win in the last round against Ashton Town. I’d like to welcome our recent additions to the playing squad which include Adam Howard, Phil Williams and Lee Harrison as well as our new physiotherapist Nicole Garner. Don’t forget our forthcoming fundraiser is a Sportsman’s Evening at St Helens Cricket Club on Saturday 3rd November. Tickets are £20 with guest speaker Howard Kendall and comedian Frankie Allen, plus a hot pot supper, raffles, etc Enjoy the game and don’t forget to join us in the clubhouse for the usual post-match debate. A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town v Runcorn Town . . . Saturday 29th September 2012 North West Counties League, Premier Division St Helens Town 0-2 Runcorn Town St Helens came away from this afternoon’s contest with last season’s runner up outfit Runcorn Town with no return after playing well but not getting the rub of the green and being on the end of some debatable decisions from the match officials. The home side started off well when a following move saw Shaun Judge linked with skipper Carl Osman who played a fine ball to debutant Adam Howard just inside the box his effort looked to be flying into the net but a last ditch block from a visiting defender diverted the effort and the ball was smuggled away. Moments later Howard started a move down the left wing and he found Greg Harrison just inside the area he crossed towards Stephen Edwards but the striker was outmuscled by his marker before he could get a shot off. The visitors almost took the lead with their first foray forward of any note when former St Helens forward Liam Pearson was released by along through ball from James McShane and one on one with Lee Novak in the home goal he looked certain to score but the stopper stood up well and when the shot came he diverted it over the bar with his foot. Normal service was resumed as the hosts threatened when Edwards had an effort from the edge of the area who blocked by a defender and a well worked move saw Howard get into the box and his ball was half cleared to Cole Ashton on the edge of the area his effort beat the keeper but was headed over the bar by a defender on the line. On the half hour mark Osman dug out an excellent cross from the right wing which Edwards met with a glancing header the ball broke towards Scott McNair whose touch spooned the ball upwards he rose to head the ball goalwards and was crudely pushed in the back by the referee decided there was no foul and play was allowed to continue. Another effort from the hosts saw Judge break away from his marker centrally before linking with McNair on the right of the area his cross found Osman 18 yards out his effort was partially blocked by a last ditch challenge which took all the speed off the effort and the visiting stopper was able to collect the effort. Novak had to be alert again to keep St Helens from going behind when a Runcorn corner from the right broke to Thomas Spearitt on the far post his effort looked to be a certain goal but Novak extended himself well to shoot out a strong arm and divert

. . . Match Report and Photos the effort over the bar. Runcorn took the lead much against the run of play on 41minutes from the penalty spot, McShane got into the penalty area on the end of a long ball and he was confronted by Novak who won the ball at his feet with the striker felled in the challenge, there was no appeal from the visiting players but the referee deemed the incident was foul play and McShane converted the spot kick to send the visitors into the break in front. The second half’s first effort on goal saw Howard’s centre from the left find Osman who headed an effort goalwards with Wills able to hold the effort centrally. The hosts received another kick in the teeth when a free kick was awarded to Runcorn just moments after a worse foul had been overlooked and from the set piece Danny Toone thundered an effort in off the inside of the left hand upright from 25 yards. St Helens bounced back in an attempt to reduce the arrears Judge had an effort blocked from the edge of the area which broke to Osman whose cross found Harrison and his headed effort was held by Wills. A counter saw Runcorn almost make it three as Novak saved well at the feet of Paul Shanley before McNair released Edwards into a one on one situation but the striker was quickly closed down by Wills in the Runcorn goal who blocked his effort at close range. Wills was again called upon from a corner as he had to be alert to turn Osman’s effort around his left hand upright. With time running out the visitors were awarded a second debatable penalty with time Ryan Malone went down easily after the slightest of contacts and this time Mark Keddie stepped up striking the spot kick to Novak’s left the keeper went the right way for the second time this afternoon but this time he gained his reward pushing the spot kick away. In added on time Toone was again to take a free kick from 25 yards and again he struck the upright this time more fully with the ball breaking back to McShane who blazed his effort over the bar. St Helens Town; Novak, G.Pye, Howard, Williams, Crompton, Ashton, G.Harrison(Sykes-Wright 71), Judge, Edwards(Johnson 75), Osman(C), McNair(L.Harrison 71). Sub Not Used; Hatton.

Jamie Bailey (GK) – Local Goalkeeper Jamie arrived at Parkgate last season and secured his place as Number one with consistent all-round confident performance. As well as being a great shot stopper Jamie commands his area well and is a great foundation on which the side is built. Richard Tootle - Joining the Steelmen on the left hand side of defence is another player from Handsworth. Richard has great composure, quick feet and the ability to push forward from defence. Don’t be fooled by Richard’s size as his vision and all round ability mean he will be a massive player for Parkgate this year.

Todd Jordan – Todd has signed up for his second season down at Roundwood after making his debut last year. Commanding in the air but also comfortable and controlled with the ball on the floor Todd has a calm head and reads the game well. William Senior – Will has been at Parkgate for several years and has consistently played a large part in Parkgate's recent success. Originally starting off as a centre forward Will has since moved back into Midfield where his tenacious tackling and great awareness have being valuable to the team. Daniel Patterson - Centre Midfielder Danny was Player of the Year at NCEL Division One champions Handsworth last season. Danny is renowned for his battling qualities and it was these combined with his great engine that made him stand out from an all round successful side last term. Janni Lipka – Janni rejoined the Steelmen at the end of last season after having time away at University. Janni was an integral part of the 2010-11 side that finished second in the league and made the S&H Challenge Cup Final. Luke Fletcher – Luke also rejoined Parkgate after a short spell at NCEL rivals Scarborough. An absolute machine in the midfield Luke has one of the best engine's in the league and is the quintessential box-to-box midfielder who never shys out of a challenge. Nathan Forbes-Swindells – Nathan is one of the most exciting players in the league and one of Parkgate's longest serving players. Incredible skill and pace combined with lethal finishing has seen him being placed as one of the division's top scorers over the last few seasons. Brian Cusworth – Well travelled veteran strike Brian Cusworth joined the Steelmen half way through last season. Great positioning and composure mean that Brian brings a great dimension to the Parkgate forward line. Keir Hannity – Keir is one our longest serving players and has been an integral part of the Parkgate attack over the last few seasons. The diminutive midfielder has great feet and vision, attacking opposition defences at speed creating many of the Steelmen's goalscoring opportunities. Adam Shepherd – Another solid box-to-box midfielder Adam joined the Steelmen last year and was a regular in the side throughout the season. Adam has a great work ethic and tenacity adding bite to the midfield. Joel Purkiss - Usually positioned as a striker or right winger Joel has the ability to play anywhere across the front line. With incredible pace and great feet Joel will relish playing on the great surface here at Roundwood. Jacob Walters-Lang - 21 year old Jacob joins us from Alfreton Town. Jacob is a bull of a striker that can hold the ball up well but has the pace to strike fear into defence in the NCEL.

Silsden v St Helens Town . . . North West Counties Football League Premier Division Saturday 6th October 2012 Silsden 7-1 St Helens Town Town hit for seven at Silsden

Last Saturday’s clash at Silsden looked to offer an opportunity to pick up a vital win. However, not for the first time this season, a goal was conceded inside three minutes of the kick-off and, despite playing attractive, attacking football, a further three goals against the run of play left Town trailing 4-0 with little more than a quarter of the match gone. A cross from Gary Pye after two minutes was met with a good header from Carl Osman, which just cleared the home crossbar but the early initiative was lost when Silsden took play to the opposite end, where Andy Lee’s pass found Joe Gaughan who angled a tight shot over keeper Lee Novak’s head from 20 yards to put the Cobbydalers 1-0 up. Town then exerted their own pressure and first Adam Howard then Ste Edwards had chances before Shaun Judge’s header from a free kick was tipped over by home goalie Edward Hall. Against the run of play, Silsden again broke clear and a towering header from Danny Husband was saved at full stretch by Novak, only for Michael Garrod to bury the rebound after 14 minutes. Almost immediately, Silsden launched another attack and sloppy defence gifted Lee a crossing chance, which was once again rammed home by Garrod. Town tried to hit back and Judge hit a piledriver from 25 yards from Carl Osman’s pass on 24 minutes, but Silsden broke again and despite several attempts by Town defenders to clear the ball, Elliott Holmes found Gaughan for his second goal after 25 minutes. The game was effectively over as a contest by this stage but, to their credit, Town steadied the ship and had a number of chances to open their account, most notably from the promising Osman, but another blunder on the half-way line saw two Town defenders set Danny McNulty on the run to feed Andy Lee who made no mistake to fire Silsden 5-0 ahead with six minutes to go to the break.

. . . Match Report and Photos Five shots and five goals gave the game a lop-sided look and, just to show they were only human, the home side actually missed their first chance just before the interval. Eight minutes into the second half, manager Ian Granite made three substitutions. Gary Pye, Cole Ashton and Greg Harrison were replaced by Michael Sykes-Wright, Lee Harrison and Phil Williams and the changes immediately injected more of a credible attacking threat. Town came more into the game and it was no surprise when Shaun Judge headed home after 58 minutes, following a pin-point corner from Adam Howard. Further attacks followed and Edwards went close twice more, his second saved well by Hall before Phil Williams’ fierce shot went narrowly wide. However, once again, a long-distance break from their own half saw Joe Jalil set up Garrod for his third goal after 66 minutes and, in much the same fashion, eight minutes later, Gaughan secured his own hat-trick with a beautifully lobbed effort from around 30 yards which caught Novak off his line. In summary, it was one of those days when virtually everything Silsden hit went in and, whilst Town deserved to be beaten, the final score of 7-1 was more than a little harsh in retrospect, against a team which promised much in attack but defensive frailties and a little rub of the green contributed to a hefty setback. Ian Granite and his team have much to work on ahead of this weekend’s FA Vase encounter with Parkgate at Edge Green Street. Glyn Jones

North West Counties Club News . . . Bulldozers have been working hard at Formby FC building a new Astroturf pitch at the Altcar Road ground. A former training pitch has been given over to the project, which will be sized for 5 and 7 a side football. The idea came from Squirrels' chairman Hugh McAuley who, since taking over the club in the summer of 2011, has always been keen to re-establish it as a community club, especially in providing for young people. As such, the 3G facilities will be available at a discounted rate for people of school age.

Hugh explained: “I have chosen a pitch type which is used by Manchester United at their Carrington training ground. The surface is a world away from the old astro pitches that used to graze legs. "The new 3G surfaces have been developed to replicate natural turf with outstanding performance, resulting in reduced ball bounce and low resistance to turning and sliding ensuring greater safety for players and no bald patches. The facilities will be available for £25 per hour for under-16s, and £35 for adults. I want them to be used by all of Formby’s primary and secondary schools, and see boys and girls of all ages and abilities playing on them". Squirrels Press Officer Merrick Cork added: “Seeing Council spending cuts being ordered, we're aware that there's a threat to public sports facilities. As people who grew up in the town, Hugh and the rest of us are keen to ensure that the next generation of Formby footballers are provided for". "With grass pitches already falling foul of the weather this season, the case for 3G facilities is overwhelming. We want it to be accessible to all, whether it's block bookings for structured leagues, tournaments or a one-off casual game. It doesn't even have to be football! The pitches will be floodlit, open in the evenings and till 10.30pm on weekends and bank holidays. Bookings are already being taken and with work all going to plan games will be being played there by the end of the month.

North West Counties Club News . . . PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARDS Premier Division - CHRIS SMITH of CONGLETON TOWN September saw Bears striker Chris Smith hit form, and during the month when the team scored 23 goals and conceded just 8, and lost only once in eight games, Chris found the net 11 times. He scored two hat-tricks which moved him to the top of the Premier Division goalscorers table, and played with great confidence, which for strikers is a valuable asset. Included among the goals was a picture book header from a diagonal cross against Wigan Robin Park that rocketed into the top corner and would have delighted Alan Shearer. His cheeky flick to divert an Andy Alston shot into the Winterton Rangers net with the 'keeper wrong footed and an accurate 15-yard left footed shot against AFC Blackpool were evidence that he now has a variety of techniques to find the net. His front man role has also aided the rest of the side who benefitted from his presence and produced 12 other team goals. Bears manager Jim Vince rewarded him

with the offer of a contract, which he duly signed, to end a great month for the young striker. Division One - MARTIN PILKINGTON of ABBEY HEY Martin produced an outstanding month’s performances for Abbey Hey, in a period when the club won five games and only lost one, the FA Cup tie at FC Halifax Town. As well as his goal scoring, Martin’s assists and all round play played a major part in the club’s good run of form in the league and their excellent performances in the FA Cup, and won several man of the match awards. In the FA Cup tie at Halifax he received the sponsor’s man of the match award, and was praised by Halifax manager Neil Aspin, who described his performance as outstanding. Martin’s selfless attitude typifies the team spirit that Manager Barrie Walker has instilled into the team. GOALKEEPER OF THE MONTH AWARDS – SPONSORED BY REUSCH Premier Division - MATT CONKIE of CONGLETON TOWN While his attacking colleagues went about their business scoring 19 times, Matt kept four clean sheets and conceded just six goals in the seven games he played during September. His acrobatic saves and good reading of the game certainly earned a point in the 0-0 draw against Winsford United and his penalty save against Ashton Athletic had much to do with the Bears gaining maximum points in a narrow 3-2 win. He inspires confidence behind a defence benefitting from his experience and ability, and he is a real character in the dressing room. He has a well earned reputation among non league clubs as an accomplished 'keeper, and although known for the occasional moment of madness when he fancies himself a Lionel Messi, he will always perform heroics between the sticks! Division - STEPHEN PIGGOT of CHEADLE TOWN Stephen Piggott is one of the main reasons for Cheadle Town’s good start to the season. He has been an ever present, playing in all 13 of cup and league matches so far, and produced some excellent performances during September, when the team won six and drew the other of the seven games they played. He has worked diligently on his weaknesses this season, and after two tremendous displays in FA Cup ties in August, he maintained that form in September, to consolidate his position as first choice keeper. His performances in all games this season have been top drawer and have brought solidity and confidence to the defence that was absent last season.
