Good evening and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Runcorn Linnets. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. The games are coming thick and fast here and we face another stiff test of the boys as we take on the Premier Divisions form side Runcorn Linnets this evening. Fresh off the back of a 6-0 away victory at Wigan Robin Park on Saturday. Whilst the Linnets were romping to victory not far from here we were playing well against Padiham here at Edge Green Street and our first half pressure culminated in Town breaking the deadlock on 37 minutes when Mike Sykes-Wright fire a shot home from 12 yards with the aid of a slight deflection. A slow start to the second period saw Padiham level when the dangerous Ben Allen headed home from close range but with question marks over the cross which appeared to have gone out and back into play. Not deterred Phil Williams put Town back in front with a wonder strike after a good move on 66 minutes and with eight minutes to play we looked to be sailing to an unlikely victory. As has happened a few times this season and is par for the course at the bottom of the league the wheels fell off as a pair of penalties were conceded and converted by Allen before a goal in the 90th minute saw Town with no way back to ensure a disappointing result but an encouraging performance against a team no one outside the club would have given us a chance of getting a result against. We have some games that could make or break our battle to retain our Premier Division status coming up as on Saturday we take the trip to Blackpool to take on Squires Gate before we host Bacup Borough here a week tonight and then take the trip back to Blackpool the following Saturday to take on AFC Blackpool, these contests are not so much “must win” matches as must not lose matches as we look to draw away from the relegation zone. Back to this evening we know we will have to defend well as a unit from back to front and make the most of the chances that we create if we are to ensure a return from this evenings contest but Ian and the lads will be under no illusions that we are in for a difficult evening but will be encouraged by recent performances that we are capable of being a match for most teams in this league on our day. In Town Today . . . Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born on 28 April 2006, when the fans of Runcorn Football Club, dismayed at the club’s predicament, met at their spiritual home at the Quayside in Canal Street in Runcorn and voted to establish a new club which would continue the proud tradition of non-League football which had existed in the town since 1918. A large group of fans formed an interim committee to set the wheels in motion. A Supporters Trust already existed and this was the vehicle through which the new club would be run. At this early stage, the club existed in name only, and the choice of the name Runcorn Linnets was symbolic in representing where the fans had come from and in keeping those ties with our past, whilst at the same time recognising that a new club needed to be built to re-establish confidence in the local community. To start a new club from scratch with only 4 months to the start of a new season was a

mammoth task, and the newly formed committee drew up business and action plans to attempt to achieve their objectives. Negotiations were opened on many fronts, with the FA, the Cheshire FA, the North West Counties League, Supporters Direct and Witton Albion Football Club. We received a vast amount of advice and support from all of these bodies and were hugely grateful to them all for their help. The Chairman and Board of Directors at Witton Albion FC extended the hand of friendship and offered us a ground share for the season, as no suitable venue was immediately available back in Runcorn. This we were delighted to accept. A Roll of Honour was established on our website in recognition of the support offered to us by fans and friends in those early days. We were supported by our local council and MPs in our bid for a place in the league for the start of season 2006/07. The members of the committee worked tirelessly to achieve our objective and we were delighted when we were finally accepted into the league by the member clubs on Saturday 17 June 2006 at the AGM in Buxton. It was a proud day for all of us and we were grateful to be given the opportunity to re-build a non-League club representing Runcorn and with the firm aim of moving the club back to its roots at the earliest opportunity. Former manager and player for Runcorn FC Halton, Steve Carragher, agreed to join as manager. Steve had vast non-League experience and we were delighted for him to lead the team in this new venture. The old Runcorn FC started life back in the Cheshire League, so it was perhaps fitting that we had this chance to re-build in the League that was formed from an amalgamation of that league and the Lancashire Combination. We enjoyed our first season immensely in 2006/07, visiting some new grounds and making new friends along the way and to achieve promotion in our first season was a just reward for the effort put in by so many fans. We finished second to Winsford on goal difference. Our supporters, as always, turned out in numbers to support the team and visit lots of new grounds. In season 2007/08 we entered the FA Vase for the first time, but lost at the First round stage to a strong Salford City team, which ultimately gained promotion. We had success in the Cheshire Senior Cup, beating Unibond 1 side Warrington T on their own ground and narrowly losing to Altrincham. We averaged around the 180 mark at home and often had a following of up to 100 fans at away grounds. Our desire to relocate back into Runcorn was always an integral part of our plans and we named our scheme R2R “Return to Runcorn”. At the beginning of 2008, the club decided to part with its management team by mutual consent and we appointed Steve Wilkes as our new manager, with goalkeeper Robbie Holcroft as his assistant. Steve used the second half of that season to look at players old and new. Overall season 2007/08 will be seen as one of consolidation in a higher league, with a better standard of football. Our mid-table finish was about right. We entered the FA Cup for the first time in season 2008/09 with a home tie against Rossington Main winning 3-2. Unfortunately, we then came up against a strong Curzon Ashton team and bowed out of the competition at the next stage. Curzon ultimately




progressed into the First Round proper. In the FA Vase, we had a good run up to the Third Round Proper. We then came up against Vase holders, AFC Fylde, where we lost 4-1 after a very tight first half. Good wins at Alsager and at home to AFC Fylde in the Vodkat Cup put The Linnets into the semi-finals against Silsden. A defeat in the home leg was followed up with a fighting performance at Cougar Park, which saw The Linnets through to the final at Tameside Stadium against a very strong New Mills side, where we ended as runners-up by 2 – 0 Season 2009/10 saw The Linnets again finish in mid table with little real success in the cup competitions. The main traget throughout this time had been to get the club back into the town In June 2009 we were able to release the news that our plans for a new ground had received the support of the Halton Borough Council Executive Board and just before Christmas we received the excellent news that we had received a grant of over £93000 from the FSIF. Our original plans had been to play at the Riverside College, but now, with the help of the council and the FSIF grants, we have now developed a site at the Halton Sports complex within the town. Building on the new ground started at the beginning of February 2010 and was completed over the summer. The club also announced a new club sponsor, Millbank, a UK market leading resource management solution provider, who operate from headquarters in Runcorn, who have signed up to a three year deal with the club, commencing in 2010, with the option of a two year extension.The new ground will be known as The Millbank Linnets Stadium and the opening ceremony on July 17th 2010 when Witton Albion were our visitors, attracted a crowd of over 1000 fans and this was followed up on the opening day of the season with a new record league gate for The Linnets of 508 against Colne. Season 2010/11 was the first back in Runcorn and saw The Linnets part company with the manager Steve Wilkes at the end of August, former Linnet Paul McNally was appointed as the new manager bringing in Dave Hughes, as his assistant. A rebuilding process took place during the season and the Linnets finished the season strongly. Last term the club achieved its highest ever finish in the NWCL when it came fifth. A great start to the season in the league was interspersed with cup success, but this brought us a large number of replays and no league games were played during September. The highlight of the cup runs was the 4-0 defeat of Evostick North opponents Mossley after a 0-0 draw at Seal Park. We finally exited the FA Vase up in the North East at Hebburn. During the season 7 player and manager awards came the way of The Linnets, but the weather conspired against us during the winter months and November saw us drop off the leading group when mental fatigue finally appeared to tell. From then on we were playing catch up in the league. The Linnets were once again the best supported team by some margin.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for today's league challenge cup second round game against AFC Blackpool. Today's game is our 3third home game in seven days! Last sat we drew 2-2 against Alsager Town; a game which saw us leading 2-0 until we conceded two late goals. It was again a bitter pill to swallow after playing so well in the second half. We then moved on to Tuesday and an away game (at Edge Green Street) against Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup. The game finished 0-0 and we bowed out 4-3 on penalties. Again, I thought we controlled most of the game and were unlucky not to win the game in normal time but we need to start converting our chances if we are to progress in these sort of games. As a team we are looking organised and hard to break down, which is something we have been working really hard on. Now we have to push on and start scoring some goals and winning games. I am a firm believer in if we work hard results will start to go our way and also you need that little bit of l u c k a l o n g t h e w a y w h i c h a t t h e m i n u t e w e a r e n ' t g e t t i n g . Today's game will be a tough encounter Blackpool will be looking to bounce back from a 5-0 league defeat at Colne last weekend. I hope everyone enjoys today's game and has a safe journey home. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our visitors from Runcorn Linnets FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. The last week or two has seen a definite improvement in performances and results with wins against Glossop North End and Silsden, a very creditable draw at Runcorn Town and a battling effort against Padiham on Saturday. Padiham’s 2-4 victory saw them take over the top spot in the Premier Division and I know Steve Wilkes and his lads knew they had been in a hard fought game. Town twice held the lead with goals from Michael Sykes-Wright and another stunner from Phil Williams. Our visitors converted two penalties on 83 and 87 minutes to level and then take the lead. It was another tale of clubs at opposite ends of the league table getting (or not) the rub of the green with one or two crucial decisions. All we can ask from our own team in that we keep battling for all the points on offer and when we take on those teams around us hopefully the results will come our way. Following tonight’s encounter we travel to Squires Gate on Saturday for a real ‘six-pointer’. Don’t forget this game has a 2.00pm kick off because of our Race Night later the same day. In tonight’s visitors we welcome the Premier Division’s form side who are on a great run with eight successive wins in 2013 which has seen them score 28 goals which included a 0-6 thrashing of Wigan Robin Park at the weekend. Our lads will need to be on top form to have a chance of getting anything from the game and I am sure Ian Granite will have them ready to go. We welcome back Chris Lomax who left Town a couple of weeks ago for the Millbank Linnets Stadium and he made a scoring debut against Wigan. Joey Dunn has put his charges in real contention and with a quarter of the campaign to go the Linnets are a good bet (on current form) to be challenging for the title at the end of April. As I have already mentioned we travel to Squires Gate on Saturday and we are back at Edge Green Street next Tuesday evening when Bacup Borough are our opponents. We return to the Fylde coast on Saturday 9th March when we take on AFC Blackpool. Don’t forget our Race Night this coming Saturday (see advert elsewhere in the tonight’s programme) and we will also be making the February 500 Club Draw on the same night. Enjoy the game! Runcorn Town v St Helens Town . . . Monday 18th February 2013 North West Counties Football League, Premier Division Runcorn Town 1-1 St Helens Town

St. Helens Town produced one of their best performances of the season when they visited league leaders Runcorn Town at their Pavilions ground on Monday and were well worth their 1-1 draw, their seventh point in their last four games. The point took them above Bacup into eighteenth place and to within catching distance of Ashton Athletic. Following Chris Lomax’s departure to Runcorn Linnets and the unavailability of Craig Fitzjohn and Shaun Judge, the team had a youthful look about it, with three 16-year olds on the teamsheet. One of these, Charlie Stoker, is fast making a name for himself up front, not only for St. Helens, but also for Skelmersdale youth team and, remarkably, this was his third game in three days. The defence was subjected to heavy pressure throughout and keeper Lee Novak and centre half Lee Crompton had to be on the top of their form. Chances for the visitors were few and far between in the first 40 minutes, the best of which fell to Crompton, whose header was well saved by home keeper Wills. As half time approached, however, St. Helens turned to attack and Phil Williams set up Ste Edwards, but his header went narrowly wide. Then Stoker had a glorious chance, but the ball bounced unkindly on the uneven surface and as the interval approached, Cole Ashton crossed towards the far post and the ball went agonisingly wide. The second half opened with another sustained spell of Runcorn pressure, which St. Helens withstood and, on 58 minutes, Edwards put Stoker through, but the young striker lost his footing in the mud and his chance went begging. Town did not have to wait long for their next opportunity and they had the Runcorn defence to thank for it. A poor back pass found Edwards bearing down on Wills in the home goal and the striker’s powerful shot hit Wills full in the face from point-blank range. With the keeper struggling to regain his feet and his composure, Phil Williams hit the rebound into the empty net from 25 yards. Stoker had another chance immediately after the goal, but this time the keeper held his rasping shot. Town might well have hung on for all three points but, following a contentious award of a free-kick, former St. Helens favourite Rob Whyte headed powerfully past Novak to level the scores with 16 minutes left. Runcorn, who entertain Walsall Wood on Saturday in a delayed fifth round FA Vase tie, stepped up the momentum in the closing stages and Novak was called upon to produce two good saves to preserve Town’s hard-earned point. All in all, a great all round performance ahead of successive, difficult home games to come against Padiham on Saturday and Runcorn Linnets next Tuesday evening. Manager Ian Granite and his coaching team will have slept well on Monday night.

A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

When St Helens Town . . . St. Helens Town have met Manchester City on four occasions. Strictly speaking, the clubs have only met twice, the first two occasions, soon after the transfer of Bert Trautmann, City faced teams of St. Helens-born players, drawn mostly from other Football League clubs. Both those games were played at the old Town ground at Hoghton Road, in April 1950 and again in May 1951. The other games were much later, a pre-season friendly, again at Hoghton Road in July 1996 and, more recently, at the athletics stadium adjacent to the Etihad Stadium, in November 2009, that game coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Bert’s transfer, when the clubs met to play for the Trautmann Trophy. Programmes for all four games are shown. Facsimile copies of the first two programmes were produced and given away free with the 1996 programme and the 2009 programme – produced by Town – included a facsimile copy of the programme for Trautmann’s final Town appearance, against Bangor City on 1st October

1949 in the FA Cup. The game in April 1950 was arranged as a “thank you” from City for Bert’s transfer and produced a ground record attendance of 4000 which still stands today, although the record for a Town match is 3102 for a Liverpool County Combination game against Burscough on 9th October 1948, when Trautmann played in goal. He was a former German prisoner of war, who stayed on after the Second World War and his debut for Town came in the opening match of that season, against South Liverpool, at Hoghton Road, on 28th August 1948. Bert went on to greater fame at Maine Road, playing twice for City at Wembley in FA Cup Finals, in 1955 on the losing side against Newcastle United and returning to win the Cup the following year

against Birmingham City, in a game in which he broke his neck but played on nevertheless. He enjoyed a career lasting 15 seasons at City, also representing the Football League on two occasions. Alive and well and living these days in Spain, he’ll celebrate his 90th birthday next year. The 27th April 1950 programme was an eight-page publication, double the usual number of pages for a Town issue and the first held together by staples. There was an article by Jack Phillips (who had been Secretary of the original Town club, which was formed in 1901 and lasted until 1928) and another by then-Secretary George Fryer in which he outlined the club’s ambitions




. . . met Manchester City of election to the Football League. At that time, Town were nearing the end of their third season – their first in the Lancashire Combination – and the sky was the limit following a quite spectacular run of success at the new Hoghton Road ground. It was back to four pages for the clash on 2nd May 1951 and the programme notes encouraged spectators to return the following evening for the match against Lancaster City, promising to present further football occasions of similar stature should the St. Helens public respond to the club’s ambitious aims. Town were promoted as Second Division champions in 1951, but their high expectations wee dampened the following season, finishing bottom of the First Division in 1951/52. Put into perspective, however, the Lancashire Combination was among the strongest leagues in those days, possibly the equivalent of the Blue

Square leagues of today, featuring clubs such as Wigan Athletic and Morecambe among their numbers. The programme for the pre-season friendly against City’s reserve team on 24th July 1996 was a full-sized Town issue, comprising 36 pages. Programme editor in those days was current club chairman, John McKiernan, and there was a wonderful account by Jim Barratt, now Town’s President, of his meeting with Bert Trautmann a few years earlier when he had conducted Bert in a nostalgic tour around the district. The team line-ups on that day 16 years ago included the ever-youthful Brian Hatton, as well as Gary Bickerstaffe and Adie Reilly.

A team of City legends entertained Town at the Regional Athletics Arena on Sunday, 15th November 2009, for the Trautmann Trophy and an enthusiastic gathering of just under 400 saw an entertaining game settled at 6-5 in favour of Town, the last occasion Town lifted a trophy. The programme was produced by St. Helens Town, but featured articles by various contributors at City and Maine Road FC, who still have close links with the reigning Barclays Premier League Champions. St Helens Town v Padiham FC . . . Saturday 23rd February 2013 North West Counties Football League Premier Division St Helens Town 2-4 Padiham St. Helens Town produced another excellent performance against championship-chasing Padiham at Edge Green Street on Saturday, but surrendered a 2-1 lead in the last seven minutes to go down 4-2, a result which sent the visitors to the top of the table. The game turned on a rather harsh penalty decision for handball against Michael Sykes-Wright on 83 minutes. Two minutes later, Padiham were awarded an equally undeserved spot kick for a foul by keeper Lee Novak, both of which were converted by Ben Allen, who completed a second-half hat-trick. To rub salt into Town’s wounds, Kieron Pickup netted a fourth with a powerful drive from the edge of the box in the closing stages. Padiham appeared to be heading for only a third league loss this season and the manner of Town’s defeat was totally unmerited. Chasing their third win in the last five matches, St. Helens withstood all their East Lancashire visitors could throw at them in the first half. Once again, Phil Williams was outstanding up front and he created two good chances for Ste Edwards before Sykes-Wright put Town ahead, with a fierce shot, which was deflected by Deakin-Pickard past Davis in the Padiham goal after 37 minutes. The score remained 1-0 to Town until shortly after half-time, when Allen scored the first of three goals, heading in narrowly past Novak at the far post from a cross which appeared to go out of play before drifting back in to the centre-forward. St. Helens then enjoyed their best spell of the match, Edwards firing wide on 53 minutes before Phil Williams curled a lovely shot over Davis from 20




. . . Match Report and Photos yards to put Town 2-1 ahead and, seemingly, on course for another victory with 25 minutes remaining. As time passed by, Town looked to have secured the points, only for the ball to bounce up from the uneven surface on to the arm of Sykes-Wright as he comfortably cleared the danger from his box. Allen levelled the scores from the spot but then had the good fortune to secure another penalty when Novak, shadowing Allen as he drifted aimlessly away towards the corner flag in the manner of the General Belgrano, stumbled and caught the number nine round the ankles, under the watchful eye of the assistant referee and Allen buried his second penalty to secure an undeserved victory. The fourth goal merely added insult to injury and it was the visitors who breathed a huge sigh of relief and moved rather embarrassingly to the top of the table. Town face a crucial trip to Squires Gate on Saturday, kick-off at the earlier than usual time of 2pm, to facilitate a quick departure for the Race Night at St. Teresa’s Club, knowing that a victory will put daylight between themselves and their struggling Fylde rivals in the battle against relegation. Bacup Borough will be the visitors to Edge Green Street on Tuesday evening, kick-off at 7.45pm.

NWCF League News . . . AFC Darwen manager Kenny Langford is now turning his attention to his side’s forthcoming League fixtures, after a recent break for cup action saw mixed success. Kenny’s charges clinched a place in the First Division Trophy semi-final, before they lost out to Bacup Borough in the League Challenge Cup last weekend, but Kenny is in no doubt where his priorities lie. “It’s got to be the league, ask any Manager at the start of the season what they would prefer,

and I would put my money on their answer being the same as mine”, he said. The League brings in the crowds and the higher league you play in, the better attraction it is for players wanting to come to the club. As you progress through the leagues, the crowds increase and the revenue increases too. The League has always got to be priority but any manager would like to win a cup. The cup takes the pressure off the week to week fixtures and gives us chance to play better teams as we progress. We are fortunate to be in one cup Semi Final but were unlucky to get knocked out of another on Saturday”. That narrow defeat at Bacup Borough recently was preceded by three straight league wins, and Kenny is looking for his side to pick up this weekend from where they left off. “Our league performances over the last couple of games have not been brilliant but we have ground out results and that’s what good teams do”, he said. “It all starts again on Saturday against Oldham Boro and all my players are aware of this”. Runcorn Linnets Michael Ellison of Runcorn Linnets won the Premier Division Player of the Month Award in December. He was presented with his award by League Secretary John Deal after Linnets' recent game against Bootle.
