Talk of the Town Good evening and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Stockport Sports. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. The last week or so has seen us on a bit of a road trip after the FA Cup tie here 10 days ago against Atherton Collieries. We started well in the contest in front of some national medial presence in the shape of Radio 5 Live’s Non-League Show and two great goals the first from Hamish Falconer and the second from skipper Andy Gillespie saw us 2-0 up mid-way through the first half, we conceded just before the interval and were put to the sword in the second half by an excellent Colls side who will be there or thereabouts at the top of the First Division table some the end of this term. We then had a quick turnaround as we travelled to Runcorn Town last Monday. To say we started slowly would be an understatement as we were 4-0 down at the interval. A spirited come back saw first Jack McKay (pictured right) and then Chad Whyte net and the visitors were looking good but the hope was short lived as Runcorn netted a fifth and added two more before the final whistle. Saturday’s visit to Colne was also to prove frustrating as we had some good chances in the first half but could not turn possession and getting into some positions into a goal and just before the interval the hosts netted in controversial fashion as a right wing corner was headed goalwards the ball appeared to be cleared off the line and there was some delay in the goal being awarded by the assistant referee. Again the second half became a bit of a horror show as we conceded another three goals to make it 16 goals against in the last three matches.

We need to bounce back this evening and look to get back to the better performances from the first couple of weeks of the season. We seem to collapse at the moment when we concede a goal and start to ship threes and fours. The squad had a very young average age and they need to learn fast in what can be a very unforgiving league. We have three wins and nine points on the board at the moment which sees us in the middle of an embryonic table

but if we don’t start to get some results soon it could see us start to drop down towards the dreaded relegation places. Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory your support is vital to the cause! Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today The club were established in 1970 as Woodley Athletic, and it’s name was changed to Woodley Sports during its time in the Manchester League. Woodley Sports won the Manchester League Division One title in 1992. The following year saw Woodley both win the Gilchrist Cup and took the Premier Division Runners-up spot. Work to enclose the ground began in 1996–97, and Woodley’s application to join the North West Counties League was accepted. By this time, the management team of John Imrie and Gary Lowe had been introduced. Both had played at the highest levels for professional and semi-professional clubs such as Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Macclesfield and Runcorn. During the 1997–98 season Woodley set a North West Counties League

record, when Peter Carty scored seven goals in a league game against Blackpool Mechanics. Carty was also Woodley’s leading scorer that season, netting 35 goals. Woodley also scored a record 102 league goals that season. During the summer of 1998 Woodley began work on its biggest project to date, the installation of floodlights, enabling it to enter the FA Vase, Cheshire Senior Cup, North Western Trans Floodlit Cup and the FA Cup. The 1999–2000 season saw the club’s first ever FA Cup Match against reigning NCEL champions Ossett Albion, which resulted in a 2–1 victory for the Steelmen. The continued work of the club was rewarded that season when they won the Second Division championship on goal difference from Curzon Ashton, winning 12 of their last 13 matches and drawing the other to take its place in the top flight of the North West Counties League. The 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons saw the club consolidate itself in the top half of the NWCFL First Division, with its reserve team winning a double championship in 2002; it won the Reserve Division title for the second consecutive year and the Reserve Cup. The season finished with work beginning on a new 200-seat stand, which was due to be finished for the 2002–2003 season. The 2003–2004 was Woodley’s greatest to date. It won the Cheshire FA Senior Cup, beating Witton Albion in the final. The FA restructuring of the football pyramid allowed Woodley to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League by finishing fourth in the league. The 2004–05 season saw Woodley Sports compete in the NPL Division One finishing 11th and reaching the final of theChairman’s Cup. Off the pitch the club obtained the support of two local businessmen, who worked with the club on £3.5 million development of the site. Phase one was the installation of a synthetic surface in July 2005. The 2005–06 season saw Woodley finish in their highest NPL position (finishing fourth, gaining an automatic playoff place), only to lose against Gresley Rovers. During that season, they sold striker Liam Dickinson to Stockport County for £200,000. A youth team was introduced; the previous squad moved up to become the reserve team, competing in the Lancashire League. 2006–07 was disappointing by contrast with a 10th-place finish; however, the season was notable for cup successes in major competitions at Conference North, Leigh RMI in the FA Cup and Moor Green in the FA Trophy. Home successes were gained against Marine and Whitby Town. However, they were defeated 8–7 on a penalty kick s in the League President’s Cup semi final at Premier League side Matlock, despite playing over an hour with 10 men. During the 2008–09 season, the team finished 13th in the Northern Premier League Division One North. Disappointing news was given to Woodley Sports when the administration of Stockport County was announced. Woodley were owed £150,000 from Stockport County for the sale of Liam Dickinson, and this shortfall put the club's future in doubt. However 18 year old Anthony Sarcevic was sold to Crewe Alexandra for an undisclosed fee. He came through the ranks of Woodley Sports and manager Trevor MacFarlane had given him the chance of first team football in September of that season.

Stockport Sports In the2011–12 season they were demoted to the North West Counties Football League Premier Division for ground grading reasons. The 2012/2013 season saw a new chapter in the life of Woodley Sports FC. The club under went a complete makeover which saw them benefit from full-time status, a new management team and even a new name. Stockport Sports FC will be born and their first leader will be Aston Villa legend Peter Withe. Withe had, had managerial experience in the of Wimbledon, Thailand and Indonesia. Another change saw the club changing of their nickname, Woodley Sports were affectionately known as “The Steelmen” but the new regime will see the Club being referred to as The Saxons. The nickname pays homage to the rich Saxon heritage of Stockport and pays tribute to those who named the town in the 18th Century. Despite all the changes perhaps overwhelming some, Stockport Sports will not neglect the community in its bid to become a major non-league side in the future. The Neil Rourke Stadium will boast a gymnasium which will be open for the public to use and the Stockport Sports Trust are also investing significant amounts of money to bring more full size and 5-a-side pitches to the community of Stockport in the hope that Stockport Sports can become a source of pride for a local community, as well as a blossoming football club. The new boss did not last long as in November 2012 Withe tendered his resignation to the board and now continues with various media roles outside of the club. The lofty ambitions of the club were not fulfilled in their first season back in the North West Counties League after a good start they began to drift down the table and finished in a disappointing 16th position, they also had three points deducted for playing ineligible players which impacted upon their final finishing position. The 2013-14 season saw the club have three men at the helm with Stuart Finch starting the season in the hot seat before moving upstairs to become Director of Football and Stuart Rudd taking over the managerial reigns. Rudd however then moved to Salford City as assistant to Phil Power and Asa Crowe took over with his first match being the victory at Glossop North End at the end of October. Again the Saxon’s form was inconsistent similar to the previous campaign and they finished in the middle of the table at 11th securing an improvement of five positions in the standings.

From the Chair Good evening and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division encounter with Stockport Sports. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality. For ‘The Saxons’ it’s a bit of déjà vu as they make their second appearance

at Ashton Athletic inside four days having battled out a 0-0 draw last Saturday with our landlords. Saturday saw Town end a dismal week which saw us exit the FA Cup, losing a 2-0 lead before bowing out to an impressive Atherton Collieries outfit. Last midweek (Monday) we were thrashed 7-2 and Runcorn Town while on Saturday we were again on the wrong end of 4-0 score line as Colne benefited from our generosity. I am sure Ian will be hoping for a return to our earlier form which saw us record three wins which currently sees us in mid-table on 9 points. Off the field the club goes from strength the strength and last week saw a number of new player sponsors as well as a new kit sponsor for our U17s who will be making their debut in the South Lancashire Counties League next Sunday. Our thanks go to Carl Battersby at Battmar Recovery for their support (full story in tonight’s programme). While lots of our larger sponsorship packages are now sold we are still on the look out for player sponsors (£50), match sponsors (£100) and match ball sponsors (£50) - all include website and programme advertising for the whole season and are a great way to support the club. Atherleigh Athletic while the Veterans, playing the Liverpool Business Houses League Vets Division play host to Parrys FC. Our U18s started their campaign last Sunday with a narrow home 0-1 loss to Nelson Youth - the only goal of the game coming in the final minute courtesy of a hotly disputed penalty. This Sunday the U18s travel to Salford City Youth. All fixture details are in this evening’s programme. Tonight’s two clubs will meet again in a couple of weeks when Town travel to meet Stockport Sports U21s in the opening game of the Cheshire FA U21s League on Sunday 7th September. A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

NWCFL Landmarks Monday 18th August 2014 St Helens Town become the first side in the League's history to score 1,000 away League goals, when Jack McKay netted in the 46th minute of their game at Runcorn Town. Tuesday 19th August 2014

Matthew Cavanagh's 83rd minute goal for Barnoldswick Town, the second in their dramatic 3-2 home win over AFC Blackpool, was Barlick's 200th home League goal. Stephen Barlow's winning goal for Daisy Hill in the 2-1 win at Wigan Robin Park was Daisy's 700th away League goal. Wednesday 20th August 2014 Harry Noon's goal for Winsford United in the 2-1 defeat at Ashton Athletic was the Blues' 1200th League goal. Saturday 23rd August 2014 The first of Pierre Bowen's two goals for Wigan Robin Park, their second in the 4-3 defeat at Eccleshall, was the Robins' 400th League goal. Hanley Town's 6-0 home win over Ashton Town produced three notable landmarks.

Theo Stair scored five of Town's goals, the first time a Hanley player has scored that number of goals in a NWCFL game. His fourth of the game in the 48th minute was Town's 100th League goal, and the win represents Hanley's highest home League win. League Statistician Paul Cowburn has checked the record books, and reports that the last time a player hit five goals in a game was Phil Howard on 21st April 2012, playing for Wigan Robin Park at home to Ashton Town in a game the Robins won 11-0. Before that, it was Paul Prescott of Runcorn Linnets who struck five at home to Eccleshall in a League Challenge Cup tie on the 18th February 2012, in game that Linnets won 6-0.

Between 1946 and 1962 the club, like many, didn’t have a ‘manager’. Town officials would liaise with first and reserve team captains over team selection. In 1962-63 ‘First Manager’ Pat Murphy came from Burscough with a nucleus of his team which won the Lancashire Combination Division One title for Burscough but the formulae didn’t work for Town despite financial backing of a brand new 200 seat supporters club opened by John Connelly in spring of 1962. 1963-64 Sam Cottingham came after success with Pilkington's in a move to rebalance the squad with more local players. 1964-66 Jimmy McKiernan became the club's first commercial manager and team boss after arriving from Earlestown via a successful playing career which included a spell on the North Wales circuit. 1966-68 Jackie Dewsnip, cousin of Town player Jimmy Dewsnip who along with the latter’s son Neil meant the Haydock based family served Town well over a couple of decades. 1968-71 Peter Jones took the reigns in the wake of the Northern Premier League being formed which reduced Town’s league (Lancs Combination) to one division. He moved on after three years to a position on the staff of Preston North End. 1971-77 Alan Hampson arrived from South Liverpool after a distinguished playing career at Holly Park and became a mini ‘Messiah’ as Town won the Lancs Combination title in 1972 along with the Bass Charrington and Watson trophy in quick succession. He also oversaw Town’s step into the Cheshire County League in 1975 as by then, the Lancashire Comb had become a pale imitation of its former self. 1977-79 The aforementioned Jimmy Dewsnip took the reigns after ‘Hampy’ had moved on and became the first ex Town player to become manager. He combined this with work for the Liverpool County FA with the latter eventually claiming his services after two years. 1979-80 Player manager Geoff Robinson hailed from the new overspill at Laffak where he also ran the increasingly successful ‘Starting Gate’ pub team in the blossoming new Sunday League. Many of his squad were ‘Town’ players but the ‘conflict’ of interests was seen as detrimental to the senior club. 1980-82 Jack Prytherch had been at Wigan Athletic and he brought in players from that area including new club skipper, his son in law, Steve Murfin. Jack’s reign saw the formation of the North West Counties League and Town’s first season was a struggle in the new league’s top flight resulting in a change in mid-term. 1982-84 Peter Rutherford. After the success of Alan Hampson a decade earlier, the Town board returned to South Liverpool again for their next appointment. Peter Rutherford was number two at Holly Park at the time but he also found it hard going in the NWCFL inaugural season and his charges only escaped relegation on a ‘technicality’. Things got a little better the following season and he bowed out just before glory arrived. 1984-87 Alan Wellens had skippered Town’s Lancs Combination title team and went on to become the club’s top appearances holder after making his debut at Great Harwood in 1966. His playing career was ended by a broken leg against Hyde in 1981 at Hoghton Road. Alan went on to Town history with the club’s historic journey to Wembley in 1987 before he and the vast majority of the FA Vase winning side sought pastures new. 1987-92 Alan Aspinall (pictured opposite) took over the mantle of manager following the departure of the Vase squad and management team having been Reserve team boss and spent a successful five seasons in charge.

Past & Present 1992-93 Mick Holgate presided over just one season at Hoghton Road before moving

on to Leigh RMI. 1993-2002 Jimmy McBride stepped up from his position as Reserve team boss to take the reigns of the first team for almost a decade which saw the club’s move from Hoghton Road to Saints. Took the club to its first cup final since the visit to Wembley but lost out in the League Cup and Floodlit Trophy finals in the mid 1990s. 2002-2003 John Davison and Peter King arrived from Burscough having presided over a very successful period in the ‘Linnets’ history. After a disappointing first campaign despite significant financial backing the club’s need to tighten the purse strings led to the pair’s departure at the start of the 2003 campaign, along with most of the squad. 2003-04 Ex-Everton professional Paul Lodge became Town

manager as the club reeled from financial cuts but unfortunately his youthful side struggled at the bottom of the league and he was replaced in January 2004. 2004-05 Former Town ‘keeper Joe Paladino took over the reigns from Lodge and secured the club ’s safety from relegation before going to challenge for the title during most of 2004-05. Joe resigned in March 2005. 2005-06 Assistant to Paladino, Joe Gibiliru took over the manager’s position and presided over a period of on the field stability for the club before resigning in September 2006. 2006-07 Alex Wright, who had previously been assistant manager to Paul Lodge returned to the club as manager but his tenure was short-lived as family commitments led to him stepping down in September 2007. 2007-08 John Fletcher, Wright’s assistant, was given managerial responsibility and he steered the club away from the relegation battle with a 19th place finish at the end of 2006-7. Despite the club’s off the field problems and financial difficulties the following season saw Fletcher’s charges finish fourteenth after only one defeat in the last nine games. However Town remained rooted in a relegation spot for most of the following season and Fletcher departed with weeks of the season remaining. 2009 – 2010 Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed in March 2009 and secured the club ’s safety with some ease recording six victories from the final eight games. Bickerstaffe’s fine form as manager continued throughout 2009-10 eventually finishing in 9th place. 2010 – 2011 Lee Riley steps up from assistant manager when Gary Bickerstaffe steps down at the end of the 2009-10. Lee resigned in March 2011 due to work commitments and Iain Dyson took over the managerial reigns before he too stepped down at the end of the season. 2011-12 season saw Jimmy McBride make a return to Town but it proved a diff icult season and Town parted company with him as we narrowly avoided relegation.

2012 - 2013 Ian Granite became manager following success with neighbours Wigan Robin Park FC. A challenging 2012-13 season saw Town eventually steer clear of relegation, in doing so maintaining their unique 30 year stay in the North West Counties League top division. Despite an excellent start to the 2013-14 season Ian stepped down at the end of November due to business and family commitments and Ian Price (left) took over the managerial reigns with Paul Jones as his assistant. Match Report Poor second-half display leads to another heavy defeat Colne 4-0 St Helens Town Saturday 23rd August 2014 St. Helens Town slid to another heavy defeat on Saturday at Colne, mainly due to a poor second-half performance in which they conceded two

spectacular goals and a soft penalty. The first half started brightly enough and, as early as the fourth minute, pressure in the home penalty area led to a Colne defender heading on to the top of his own bar when the ball might just as easily have fallen into the net. Soon afterwards, Andy Gillespie launched a drive which narrowly missed the target. Aaron Morris got the final touch after a sustained Town attack, only to see his shot blocked midway through the half. Town looked the better side throughout nearly all the first period, but had great difficulty playing down the slope and Marcus Perry in particular found a number of balls running away from him and out of play, which limited his usual effectiveness. Chad Whyte had another goal-bound attempt tipped over the bar by keeper Chris Thompson and it seemed only a matter of time before Town took the lead. However, with less than a minute to the interval, Colne launched an attack in which centre-backs Jonathan Hodgkinson and Hamish Falconer rose together and the Colne player just got the decisive touch as the ball crossed the visitors’ line, the referee having to seek confirmation from his assistant before awarding the goal. There was not enough time for Town to launch an attempt to level the scores before the whistle blew for half-time with Colne 1-0 up. The visitors’ hopes of pulling back the deficit were dashed by a curiously insipid display after the resumption. Colne’s players obviously had much greater experience of controlling the ball down the steep gradient and overran Town’s midfield time and time again, whilst St. Helens rarely ventured up the slope to any effect. To the onlooker, it appeared they had accepted defeat, as they rarely threatened. In truth, Colne were not a great deal better and it took two wonderful drives to raise the game from the mediocre. A badly timed tackle from captain Neil Hulme 40 yards out led to a booking for the Town skipper and worse was to follow, as Tom Berwick launched the free-kick just inside Chris Brinksman’s left post, giving the keeper no chance. Town looked a beaten side and on 75 minutes, Joe Garvin scored in similar fashion as he approached the corner of the penalty area. Brinksman made three excellent one-on-one saves from further attacks, which kept the scoreline down to respectable proportions, but he had no chance with Danny Boyle’s spot kick seven minutes from time, the ball going in off the keeper’s right hand upright. Town’s only response was a header from substitute Karl Bergqvist, which seemed certain to score, but for Thompson to tip over his bar at full stretch. Three wins from the first six league matches place Town twelfth in the table, but they will be looking to return to better form with home games to come against Stockport Sports and Barnoldswick before the end of August.

Match Report Town press the self-destruct button Runcorn Town 7-2 St Helens Town Monday 18th August 2014 St. Helens Town gave themselves a mountain to climb in little more than half an hour in a bizarre game at The Pavilions on Monday evening, gifting

Runcorn Town a 4-0 lead they barely had to work for, eventually crashing to a 7-2 defeat. For the opening 17 minutes, all appeared to be going well, Chris Brinksman getting down well to deny Sean Breen in the opening stages, before Chad Whyte, returning from holiday absence, only just failed to score from James Rushton-Woods’ cross on the quarter hour. Then Town pressed the self-destruct button: Aaron Morris took a set-piece deep inside his own half, only to find the lively Paul Shanley, who ghosted past a number of defenders and the stranded Brinksman to place the ball into the empty net on 18 minutes. Worse was to follow seven minutes later as the ball was mis-hit by Runcorn across Town’s empty penalty area, only for Mike Houghton to unaccountably raise a hand, which brought about a yellow card and a penalty award, from which Andrew Potter made no mistake. Three minutes later, at the other end, Town debutant Joseph Peers made a break down the right and found Whyte, rising high above the Runcorn defence, beating goalkeeper Stuart Plant, only for the header to glance off the post and back into the grateful stopper’s hands. At this point, Town appeared to have recovered their composure, but their luck ran out as first Rushton-

Woods was denied a clear penalty after he was hacked down from behind in the home box then, as play switched to the other end, Brinksman jumped to catch a cross and was clearly impeded by an onrushing forward in a challenge which any day of the week would have been regarded as a foul on the keeper, but the referee again allowed play to go on and the ball trickled along the goal-line to Potter, who tapped it into the unguarded net on 35 minutes then, within ninety seconds, Runcorn went four up when Sean Breen netted from a tight angle, with Brinksman stranded. 4-0 down, the first-half could not end fast enough for Town, but they just had enough time for Andy Gillespie to test Plant with a well-placed shot. The second half began with St. Helens on the offensive and they pulled one goal back immediately, a corner kick nodded on by Hamish Falconer to Jack McKay, who

buried his shot beneath a forest of defenders’ legs giving Plant no chance. Shortly after the hour mark, Runcorn were left reeling when Chris Cottington’s cross to Rushton-Woods found Whyte on the line and he tapped in to make it 4-2 and it was game on. However, Town had given themselves a mountain to climb. They were caught out on the attack trying to pull back another goal and Runcorn swept upfield on the counter, Mark Keddie netting in spectacular style on 69 minutes then, in carbon copy manner, the home side repeated the dose a few minutes later, Shanley outstripping the Town defence and finding Sam Houghton who scored with equal aplomb. Town’s misery was complete when Sean Breen scored Runcorn’s seventh and his second on 76 minutes.

Match Report Town go out of the FA Cup St Helens Town 2-5 Atherton Collieries FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round St. Helens Town lost a two-goal lead to crash out of the FA Cup to a talented Atherton Collieries side on Saturday. The final score of 2-5 did

scant justice to Town’s efforts but in the end, the Collieries team who seem destined for promotion back to the NW Counties Premier Division after an absence of six seasons ran out worthy winners. It completes a miserable run for Town, who have not won an FA Cup tie since losing their St. Helens base four years ago and with the move to Ruskin Drive set for the beginning of next season, the relocation back to the borough will not come soon enough. It was a bright afternoon at Brocstedes Park, but the players had to contend with a tricky wind. Colls hit the bar in the opening minute, but the game was wide open until Town scored twice in the 19th and 22nd minutes. Paul Cook-Hannah and Andy Gillespie combined to bring out a

good save from Josh Harris in the visitors’ goal, but there was nothing the keeper could do to prevent central defender Hamish Falconer netting with a well-taken half volley from the resulting corner kick. Town extended their lead three minutes later, Jack McKay dispossessing Atherton attackers to send Gillespie on the run and the striker, playing his first full game since returning from injury, scored in some style from 30 yards out. Town not only had to contend with the wind and a well-organised visitors’ side, but also the referee who brandished three yellow cards to the home team’s players for what looked to be relatively minor offences. However, when Gillespie had his shins raked by Andy Heald in a deplorable tackle, the visiting defender only received the same, scant punishment. As the half wore on, the visitors built up a good head of steam and

the value of Town’s two goal advantage became more and more important. Town managed to weather the storm until the 37th minute, when a debatable free-kick near the corner of the home penalty area allowed Mark Truffas to bend the ball around the Town wall and beat Chris Brinksman at his far post to reduce the deficit approaching the break. The second half was mostly one-way traffic and the young Town side simply could not compete with Atherton. Ben Hardcastle and new signing Mark Battersby, who had just joined from Glossop, were a continuous threat and it was no surprise when Hardcastle took full advantage of a defensive blunder to level the scores on 51 minutes. Town were let off the hook five minutes later when Battersby fired wide across an open goal, then Brinksman had to save at full stretch from Hardcastle as the visitors pressed for a lead. Worse was to come for Town, who lost Cook-Hannah to injury, only for replacement Chad Whyte, who was still adjusting to the pace of the game, to mis-time a challenge in the corner of the penalty area and from the resultant spot-kick, Battersby made no mistake. James Brooks put the tie beyond Town’s reach with a fourth goal in the 69th minute, from a one-two with Battersby and any hope Town had of closing the gap was extinguished when Marcus Perry was hacked down from behind by the fortunate Heald only for the penalty appeal to be turned down by the referee, who must surely have been unsighted, such was the ferocity of the foul and the hapless Perry had to be carried off the field. Phil Howard, who always seems to score against his home town club, grabbed his obligatory goal five minutes from the end.
