Talk of the Town Good afternoon and welcome to Brocstedes Park for this FA Challenge Vase, First Round Proper Tie against our friends from Yorkshire Amateur. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they enjoy the short time they will spend with us and have a safe journey home after the game. It’s a quick turnaround as we are back at home this afternoon after hosting

Runcorn Town here in league action on Tuesday evening as we looked to bounce back for the disappointment of exiting the Men United League Cup the previous Saturday. Whilst the performance in the first half was not exactly vintage we were solid against an outfit who had put seven past us in August and a 0-0 stalemate at the interval was probably a fair reflection on the first half in which the hosts had had the best chance a Kris Bell glancing header from a left wing corner which was headed off the line by a Runcorn defender. The second period saw an invigorated St Helens Town lead by Gareth Grant who had an extra incentive to perform well up against his former club and his drive and determination was at the heart of a lot of the good work from the hosts. He was involved in the opening goal five minutes after the restart when he beat his marker on the right of the box and squared to Chad Whyte who seems to be hitting good scoring form at present and he made space to turn and fire his effort home taking his

tally to three goals in the last two matches and seven for the season and taking him to the top of the Town scoring charts. The advantage was doubled when ten minutes later skipper Andy Gillespie did well down the right hand side of the box and his inch perfect low cross found Bell on the far post and he slid the ball home from close range. St Helens then had a whole host of chances to make the victory assured as Gillespie, Aaron Morris and Bell had chances to net and when the visitors pulled on back on

83 minutes there were flashbacks to Saturday’s second half capitulation against Widnes which were heightened when a free kick on the left edge of the St Helens area was deflected away from Rory Crowther and into the net to level matters. Crowther had to be alert soon afterwards to keep out a dipping effort and Gillespie could have taken the spoils for St Helens as he had an effort which was partially blocked by the visiting stopper and squirmed through his legs but the keeper was able to collect the loose ball before it crossed the line and embarrassed him and so the points were shared. We can take positives from the last couple of matches we have started to find the net again with regularity as the front three of Bell, Gillespie & Whyte have started linking well together and whilst we have conceded two decent leads in these games at least we have been able to get into that position to start with and we have something to build upon. The focus obviously turns to FA Vase action as we welcome Northern Counties East League opponents for the second time this term, Yorkshire Amateur are from Division One and currently sit in 10th position with 22 points from 14 games. They are on a decent run of form at the moment and Pricey, Nick and the lads will not be under estimating their threat as we look to be in the hat for the second round draw on Monday morning. We have met once before with Town triumphing 6-3 AET at Bracken Edge in September 2000 a result we’d definitely take this afternoon! Finally, let’s get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto victory you support is vital to the cause!

Enjoy the game . . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today Yorkshire Amateur AFC was founded in November 1918 by Kolin Robertson, but only began playing matches in 1919. In those early days, the club's fixtures largely consisted of playing friendlies at Elland Road following the demise of Leeds City FC, on the orders of the Football Association, after irregularities were discovered in their accounts. However, in 1920 the club decided that the ground was not suitable for their needs and sold the lease to the newly formed Leeds United AFC for the sum of £250! The aim of the club in those days was to compete as a major force against the

professional teams playing in the north of England, this proved not to be viable and in 1920 the club became one of the founder members of the Yorkshire League. In 1922 the club became the first British team to tour in Latvia and Estonia. The club produced a number of leading amateur international players such as Joe Woodcock who, at left back, was the first Bradford born amateur international. The "Ammers" or “Ammas”, as they were known, moved to their present headquarters at Bracken Edge in 1922 after using several other grounds, including sharing with Harrogate Town. This period was by far the most successful for the club and a record crowd of 3569 paid receipts of £160 to see the 5-2 Amateur Cup Quarter Final replay victory over Wimbledon. This was after a 2-2 draw at Wimbledon before a crowd of 12,000. The "Ammers" had demolished the holders, Wycombe Wanderers, 4-0 in the previous round and the club's sights were now set on a Wembley appearance. Unfortunately, Marine FC had not read the script and triumphed 2-1 in the semi-final replay played at Leicester City's ground. Such was the strength of the side in the 1931-32 season that George Hudson, the Amateur International and Captain of that season's Football Association Representative XI, could not make the Ammers side and left the club in mid-season to join Farsley Celtic in the hope of gaining a first team place. The same season saw the club finish as runners-up to Huddersfield Town in the Yorkshire League after losing 2-1 in a play-off. The club also reached the first round of the FA Cup losing 3-1 at home to Carlisle United after defeating Denaby United, Altrincham and Frickley on the way. 1932-33 saw the club become the inaugural winners of the Yorkshire League Cup, beating Huddersfield Town 4-2 in the final. The 1945-46 season had seen the club again reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. The Ammers went down to Lincoln City 5-2 on aggregate after winning the first leg 1-0 at home. The post war years, however, saw a decline in the fortunes of the club, but occasional success was seen playing in the lower reaches of the Yorkshire League along with victories in County Cup competitions. By the late 1970's the club was at a very low ebb and a youth policy was embarked upon with the formation of the Junior Section. This policy has produced rich dividends over the years with a number of players moving on to full-time professional football including Stuart Naylor & Gary Strodder (both West Bromwich Albion), Andy Watson (Swansea City) and Warren Ward (York City). Probably the most famous is Brian Deane of Middlesbrough and England who played in the Ammers First Team. A number of the current open-age squad are also products of the club's strong Junior Section. The club became a founder member of the newly formed Northern Counties East League in 1982. The club's resurgence continued in this new era with the construction of a covered seated stand, spectator hard standing all around the pitch, new dressing rooms, the installation of floodlights and the building of a floodlit wet weather training facility. In addition, the clubhouse was extended and refurbished with a new bar, lighting and decor.

Yorkshire Amateur The club also saw success on the field with the first team rarely being out of the top five throughout the main part of the 1990's. The team also won the Leeds Senior Cup Final at Elland Road and became Wilkinson Sword Trophy winners in 1998. The Reserve side also twice triumphed in the Reserve Team League Cup during that period. Graham Hodder took over from Pete Cusic in March 2007. Graham had been managing the Reserves and also Yorkshire Amateur's U19 Academy side and was asked to take over when Pete Cusic resigned, Pete Ryder who was Assistant Manager of the Academy agreed to be the First Team Assistant. Graham's first full season in charge was very much a consolidation period as due to a lack of experienced players Graham has relied heavily on the young players from the Academy that he played the major part in setting up and these young men have done well in stepping up to the NCEL. 2007 saw the return of Dave and Ann Packham and Charles Sharman to the club committee. The dressing rooms have been improved with the addition of a separate changing room for female officials and further improvements were made to the clubhouse. The 2007-08 season also saw John Ward taking over the Academy bringing a whole host of exciting young players with him to add to the players already at the Academy. The Academy had a very good season finishing in third place in the league and having a good run in the F.A. Youth Cup. The period between 2005-06 and 2013-14 seasons saw the club struggling at the wrong end of the NCEL Division One table with the exception of a third placed finish in the 2010-11 season. This term however has seen the club having resurgence and they have recorded some impressive victories including recently defeating table topping AFC Emley and winning at Billingham Town to advance to this stage of the FA Vase. The management, committee and players have continued to work hard and progress is steadily being made and there is a definite "feel good" feeling at the club at present and a belief that the club is going places.

From the Chair Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Brocstedes Park for our FA Carlsberg Vase 1st Round Proper tie against visitors Yorkshire Amateur FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and enjoy our hospitality. Firstly, many thanks to

today’s Match Sponsor The Tanner Pub and our former manager Ian Granite for his support. We also thank Ariete Restaurant, Newton-le-Willows who are today’s Match Ball sponsors - your support is greatly appreciated and we hope you enjoy your afternoon with us. Town will be looking to build on a very solid midweek performance which was tinged with some disappointment at not taking all three points in our 2-2 draw with Runcorn Town. With less than ten minutes remaining Town were 2-0 up and had had a number of gilt edge chances to extend their lead but it wasn’t to be and two late efforts, the second a wicked deflection saw Runcorn scramble a draw. Having suffered a 7-2 in the reverse fixture I am sure we would have taken a point prior to kick off but the performance warranted more! This afternoon’s visitors have had a great October recording four wins from five outings (NCEFL League table elsewhere in today’s programme). They opened last month with a 1-3 away win at Billingham Town in the FA Vase before suffering their only loss when Eccleshill United earned a 0-1 away win. The ‘Ammers’ secured a 3-2 home win over league leaders Emley AFC and completed October with two further victories - a 1-5 win at Hall Road Rangers and last Saturday a 3-0 home victory over Winterton Rangers. Hopefully we are starting to see a settled side once again and with a few news faces over the last couple of weeks Ian Price and Nick Matthews will be hoping for progress today and some improvement in our league position. Our U21s are in Cheshire U21s League action tomorrow afternoon as they entertain Vale Juniors (Congleton) at Edge Hill University, 12 noon kick off. Also in action tomorrow are the U17s who travel to Southport U17s in the South Lancs Counties League while the U18s are away at Altrincham Youth (NW Youth Alliance League). The Veterans side playing in the Liverpool & District Sunday League are at home to Hunting Lodge Athletic. Full fixture and results information for all our teams are available on the club website sthelenstownafc.com As long as a replay isn’t required we will be back to league action on Tuesday evening when we make the trip to Stockport Sports while next Saturday we entertain high flying Colne FC here at Brocstedes Park Enjoy the game . .

NWCFL News

Silsden have produced a commemorative brochure and organised a remembrance event to honour footballers from the town who were killed in the First World War. Press Officer Jim Rosser, Commercial Manager Barry Thomas and General Secretary Peter Hanson have put together an illustrated, 16 page newspaper featuring memories from 100 years ago. The publication is named "The Silsden Herald", and in addition to the newspaper, the

club will be organising other commemorative events around their home game against 1874 Northwich on Saturday 8th November. Jim explained the background to the newspaper and the events.

"On August 4th, 1914 Great Britain declared war on Germany and over six hundred Silsden lads took the “King's shilling”. Whilst at the Front on R and R, they started playing football, and the Silsden lads wrote home for some football shirts. "The people of Silsden rallied round and produced some blue and white striped shirts, which were duly sent to the Front and the Silsden lads proudly played in their new strip. The significance of the strip is that in 1914 Silsden won the Keighley and District FA Charity Cup. They were playing in blue and white stripes and beat the favourites, Cullingworth FC, by three goals to two, in front of a crowd of 2,500 in Keighley. "The Silsden lads, mainly in the 9th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment, went on to play in a cup competition in the strip, eventually going on to win a prestigious cup. They were presented with the cup and silver medals by the Brigadier General. "The skipper of the team, Clarkson Baldwin, survived the war and his daughter Elizabeth, who still lives in Silsden will be bringing his medal down to the Cobbydalers ground on November 8th. July 1st 1916 was the date of the first Battle of the Somme. Silsden footballer Private John Gill was one of the early casualties on the day which

is described as “The worst day in British History”. On the 7th July, two more of Silsden footballers, Sergeant John Baldwin and Private Stanley Wrigglesworth were amongst the fallen. "The "Silsden Herald" features memories from that period. There are features on Dr. John Purcell, the man who was responsible for the formation of the club, the Silsden footballers who died at the front and also the skipper. There are letters sent from The Front by soldiers who later died, or from their comrades. There is a match report on the 1914 Keighley and District Cup Final and the history of Silsden AFC. There are features on the Bancrofts of Silsden, The Red Lion, Silsden Post Office and Jackson's Taxis. "There are articles on the two main industries of Silsden, Clog making and Weaving and the living conditions of the workers. Other news from 1914 includes the opening of Hothfield Street School and a dance at the Town Hall! No “Silsden Herald” would be without an article on the Silsden Police Station Riot which took place in 1912.

NWCFL News Alsager Town are looking at options for developing facilities at their current Wood Park ground, while at the same time exploring the possibility of moving to a new location. It's the latest chapter in a story surrounding the ground, which first began in July 2011 when most of the club house, office and part of the newly refurbished away team changing rooms were destroyed in a fire. With support from the town’s

largest employer, BAe Systems and a number of their contractors, a group of volunteers, headed up by Chairman Terry Greer, and known as “Terry’s Gang” worked seven days a week to get the clubhouse rebuilt and the facilities back up to standard within a few months, and work has continued since then. Now, Terry believes that it's time for the club to look at moving up to the next level as far as facilities are concerned.

"We've spent two or three years getting the facilities up to standard, which are reasonable now, but we are not where we want to be as a club", he said. "We have a meeting with planning inspectors next month, and if we get the go ahead, we would then move to submitting a planning application to build a new ground in another area of Alsager. "We can become more of a community club if we move to a new ground, because at the moment we just have the one pitch. If we move to a new stadium then we would look to have a full size 3G pitch as well as the main pitch, and if it was left to me that would be a 3G surface as well. "I'd rather have two full size 3G pitches than

a grass one and a 3G, because that would mean we'd have two pitches that could be used all the time, and we could hire a 3G pitch out and it would mean the income streams would be better". The issue of increasing current levels of income is one that Terry believes is integral to the ongoing development of the club, on and off the field. "It's difficult to compete with the income coming in as it is at the moment", said Terry. "We haven't quite got the depth of squad we'd like. The teams at the top of the table have the bigger budgets and can go and get players, but where we are, there are five or six Evo-Stik League clubs fairly close to us, so to compete with them we need more to attract players (from higher levels) than we can offer at the moment. "At the moment we have to pay to go and train somewhere else, our youth teams have to play elsewhere, and we'd wouldn't have to do that if we had a 3G pitch to use that was ours. If we had that, it would be a massive plus for us as a club. If it goes through (the planning application) we reckon we would have a new home by 2017. However, if it doesn't go through we'll work on getting the freehold on our existing ground and look to develop the facilities there. We need an additional new pitch to develop as a club, and for now we will look at both options available to us".

Match Report Town so close to first Runcorn win St Helens Town 2-2 Runcorn Town St. Helens Town turned in a terrific performance against Runcorn Town on Tuesday, which should have brought about a convincing first victory in eight attempts over this season’s FA Cup giantkillers, but in the end they had to

settle for a 2-2 draw, after the visitors levelled the scores with a lucky deflected goal in the closing stages. Still, this was one of their best performances of the season and will give them great confidence ahead of their FA Vase First Round Proper tie against Yorkshire Amateur on Saturday. The continued absence of Ryan Duffy with a hamstring injury led to a debut for new signing Jack Hont at left back, which freed Aaron Morris to take up a more effective midfield role and, with Gaz Grant looking to impress against his former teammates, Town had a much more convincing look in attack, where Andy Gillespie, Chad Whyte and Kris Bell impressed, particularly in the second half. Sadly, Jamil Saleh was injured in the first half, but Jack McKay gave an improved performance, coming on as

substitute. The first half saw few chances for either side, Chris Lawton saving a certain goal for Bell after he headed the powerful shot up against the underside of the bar and away on the half hour. At the other end, Paul Shanley, who turned in a subdued performance, missed an open goal for the visitors, just ahead of a chance for Grant who let fly, only for his goal-bound drive to be blocked by a Runcorn defender. After half-time, St. Helens stepped up the pressure against the visitors’ defence and went into a deserved lead after 50 minutes, Grant turning full-back Danny Toone inside out to set up a chance for Whyte, who turned and lobbed keeper Stuart Plant with a well-placed shot into the top corner of the net. The second goal came ten minutes later, when Gillespie outstripped Toone, took the ball to the by-line and hit a well-weighted cross which Bell gleefully turned in. Town appeared well in control at 2-0 and were unfortunate not to add to their tally when first Morris, put through by Whyte, hit the top of the bar on 72 minutes and then Gillespie, taking on three defenders, could only hit over from 12 yards out a short time later. Runcorn pulled a goal back with seven minutes

remaining, substitute Sean Breen hitting home a rebound after the initial effort was blocked by the St. Helens defence and following another attack, were given a controversial free-kick on the corner of the home penalty area following an untidy challenge by Grant. Unfortunately for the home side, the ball was deflected by Toone past the hapless Rory Crowther for the equaliser, but the keeper then pulled off a tremendous save from Mark Keddie as Runcorn went in search of a winning goal. There was still enough time for Town to try to restore their lead and substitute Karl Bergqvist set up Gillespie for what looked to be the winning goal, but Plant just got enough to take the sting out of the shot and re-gathered at the second attempt with the ball squirming towards the open goal. Although St. Helens lost their lead for the third successive match, they were unlucky not to come out winners following a much more convincing performance and that elusive first league victory since early September cannot be far away.

A Brief History The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again for the 1955/56 season, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is still the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was to win the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire

secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Sadly, all three have passed away in the last few years. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, include John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase

winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United.

of St Helens Town AFC

Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. Season 2010-11 saw Town slide to 16th and next to bottom in 2011-12, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town began the 2012-13 season under new manager Ian Granite, who brought in a new team and coaching set-up and they battled well to avoid relegation, their status being confirmed with a couple of games remaining. 2013-14 was a mirror-image of the previous campaign, with a 14-game unbeaten run between September and December putting the club just behind the front runners for two thirds of the campaign. Granite resigned in November 2013 due to work and family commitments and his assistant Ian Price took over the reins, assisted by Paul Jones and Nick Matthews, but the long breaks caused by the winter weather interrupted their earlier rhythm and Town finished the season once again in the lower reaches, although never in any serious danger of the drop. Following the demolition of the Knowsley Road ground in 2010, Town have led a nomadic existence up the road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, sharing Ashton Town’s Edge Green Street ground for three seasons before moving across town to Brocstedes Park as the guests of Ashton Athletic in 2012. The current season is scheduled to be the club’s last in exile, as plans are in place for re-location back to St. Helens for the 2015-16 season at the Council-owned Ruskin Park site, currently undergoing massive redevelopment and a brand-new facility awaits. In readiness for the move, the club is undergoing a radical re-branding, adopting the town’s coat of arms as their badge once again and reverting next season to their traditional blue and white colours in preparation for a return to the town in 2015.

We’ve recently welcomed three new Players Sponsors on board - Evolution Recruitment Solutions (Ryan Duffy), Forster Dean Solicitors, St Helens (Jack McKay) and R&M Car Services Motor Factors (Nathan Ogden). The

details of all all our sponsors can be found in today’s match programme and on our website. We also welcome Alan Gibbons from The Track King Ltd who will be our Executive Match Sponsor for our home fixture against 1874 Northwich on Saturday 13th December. We also welcome back former Town manager Ian Granite who has sponsored today’s game through his Skelmersdale based pub The Tanner. They are joined this afternoon by Marco Cabrelli of Ariete Italian Restaurant in Newton-le-Willows who are this afternoon’s match ball sponsor. The club would also like to thank Tom Hallwood Managing Director of Hallwood Solutions who have this week agreed a bespoke sponsorship package which includes a 1st team Player

Sponsorship, Match and Match Ball packages and sponsorship of the training kit and rain jackets for our U17s. Also joining our list of partners will be the Hippodrome Bingo (St Helens) who will be match ball sponsors at a forthcoming fixture. The club are also discussing a fundraising event with them which will be announced once the details are confirmed. Club Chairman John McKiernan said, ’I’d like to thanks all our new sponsorship partners for their support. ‘We are continuing to work hard to secure additional sponsorship even though the season is well underway. ‘We have a few more businesses that we are currently talking to and hopefully these will result in more sponsorship. ‘We still have lots of opportunities for individuals and businesses to support the club and benefit from our hard work in promoting them. We have a number of

games which require Match and Ball sponsors and Player sponsorship is still available for a number the squad.’ ‘We offer a great deal in return for packages from just £50 – anyone interested should contact me on 07713 339 682 for further details.’ If you require any more details of sponsorship or commercial opportunities at the club contact the Chairman John McKiernan on 07713 339 682 or email [email protected]

Match Report Town let slip a three goal lead to crash out of Men United Cup

Widnes 4-4 St Helens Town (after extra time) Widnes won 4-3 on penalties This game had to be seen to be believed. Leading 4-1 at half-time, Town simply did not turn up in the second half and allowed Widnes to claw their way back into a game in which they had appeared dead and

buried, levelling the tie in the 90th minute, before winning the penalty shoot out 4-3. The first half was so easy for St. Helens. They carved open the Widnes defence time and time again, taking the lead in the first minute when Andy Gillespie’s cross was dispatched by Chad Whyte for his first goal and the same player added a second from the penalty spot after Kris Bell had been brought down by Paul Carney after 13 minutes. At 2-0, the temptation was to sit back,

but Widnes served warnings of things to come, twice going close when James Halpin and then Jack McKay cleared shots off the line in the 17th and 20th minutes. Still, Town pressed home their advantage, Whyte nearly netting a third three minutes later, before another burst and cross from Gillespie was turned in by Bell to make it 3-0 after 25 minutes. Widnes reduced the arrears on 40 minutes, a free kick from out on the touchline, being deflected past Rory Crowther by one of his own defenders, but Town restored their three goal cushion right on half-time when a cross from Jamil Saleh found its way into the Widnes net from 20 yards out. Town took it easy in the second half, no doubt thinking they had done enough to win, trying pot-shots from distance, but Widnes hit back with a second goal on the

hour, Sean Bowden-Davies hitting home from 45 yards out, beating Crowther all ends up. Still, the odds against a Widnes win lengthened when they were reduced to ten men soon afterwards, but the introduction of substitute Jamil Campbell-Joseph turned the game. He ran the Town defence ragged and was rewarded with a goal on 78 minutes when, drawing Crowther on the edge of his 18-yard box, slotted home to make it 4-3 and Town simply had nothing left to offer when Alex Davies scored the equaliser in the last minute. The home team very nearly won the tie seconds later, but Campbell-Joseph blasted over the bar when it seemed easier to score. Extra time found both teams tired and neither produced any chances of note. On then, to the penalty shoot out and both teams scored from their opening three kicks, Town’s Gaz Grant, Saleh and Whyte netting. Widnes keeper David Nevitt then saved from Lewis Coyle before Campbell-Joseph put Widnes ahead for the first time and Karl Bergqvist hit his spot-kick against the underside of the bar and Town were out. Whilst Widnes were given a difficult trip to Glossop in the next round, St. Helens were left to lick their wounds. On the positive side, they have re-discovered their scoring touch but they must learn quickly how to shut out a game, especially with the FA Vase tie against Yorkshire Amateur at Brocstedes Park due next Saturday.
