SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY SEXTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
February 16th, 2020
CHOICE “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Si-rach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries, of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfish-ness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE —Matthew Cormier MENSAJE DEL PARROCO– Matthew Cormier
GLUTTONY This is part of a series on the seven capital sins. We in southern Louisiana love our food, but is it possible to love food too much? Sadly, for Cajuns like me, the answer is yes. Remember that most vic-es are an excessive love of something good in itself. Food is good. We need it to live. Eating can even be pleasurable. The deadly sin of gluttony is an inordi-nate or disordered love of the pleasures of the table. Gluttony is an abuse of the legitimate pleasure that God has attached to eating and drinking. For those who struggle with gluttony; food or drink can easily become their “god” and the soul becomes a slave of the body. Abuse of alcohol (intemperance) would fall under gluttony. Just think of all the lives and families ripped apart by alcoholism. Like with any addiction, a person’s culpability may be lessened depending on the severi-ty of the addiction. Nevertheless, it does not make it any less wrong or its effects any less harmful. Our Lord’s first miracle was turning water into wine so alcohol is not bad, in itself, but like anything it can be abused. If one drinks to the point that he starts to feel sick or his judgment begins to be impaired, he has entered the realm of grave sin. That sin can be further compounded and lead to graver sins like en-dangering the lives of others by drinking and driv-ing. Wasting one’s money and the money of one’s family on alcohol when it could go to more im-portant things is another sinful side-effect. Gluttony is a grave fault when it incapacities us, for example, eating so much that it makes us ill or una-ble to function. It is also a grave fault when it leads to other grave faults like in the examples above re-garding alcohol abuse. Remember that big word concupiscence? The inclination to sin that we all have because of the Fall of Adam and Eve. Remem-ber that there are three types of concupiscence; con-cupiscence of the eyes, vain-glory, and concupis-cence of the flesh. Gluttony is the first of the sins in concupiscence of the flesh. The other two are lust and sloth. Those will be the next two that we cover. Gluttony can often lead to lust and sloth. Unchastity has been called the “offspring of gluttony”. Gluttony and intemperance weaken the will, making it harder to resist other bodily temptations. Sin only leads to more sin. Sins of the flesh may bring feelings of pleasure for a time, but the pleas-ure quickly passes and then we have to keep feeding the appetite. As important as it is to feed our bodies, we should not feed them more than is good and healthy. Far more important than the feeding of the body is the feeding of the soul which is fed by the divine food of the Eucharist.
