Coinciding with the Bath Art Affair, Hilton Fine Art presents two exhibitions.

The lower gallery will show an exhibition of St Ives artists past and present, exploring why the tip of the Cornish peninsula remains such a thriving and fertile place for artists. The show features work by Sandra Blow, Peter Davies, Rose Hilton, Kurt Jackson, Stuart Knowles, Matthew Lanyon, Jason Lilley, Daphne McClure and Linda Weir.

Alongside this show there will be an exclusive exhibition of paintings by William Crozier in the ground floor gallery, including previously unseen work. The two shows compliment each other by their exploration of landscape in terms of colour, pattern and a sense of place.

Sandra Blow R.A. (1925 - 2006)

Sandra Blow, painter and teacher: born London 14 September 1925; Tutor, Painting School, Royal College of Art 1961-75; ARA 1971, RA 1978; died Truro, Cornwall 22 August 2006.

During the 1950s, Sandra Blow was one of the pioneering abstract painters who introduced into British art a new expressive informality, using cheap, discarded materials such as sawdust, sackcloth and plaster alongside the more familiar material of paint. A tactile as well as visual emphasis on surface resulted in powerful and complex images, exuding a rooted earthiness, yet full of mysterious flux and ambiguity. Later, in response to the optimistic climate of the 1960s, Blow’s palette lightened and for most of the rest of her career, easily manipulated collage materials, like torn paper or brightly coloured canvas cut-outs, littered her often large-scale pictures. The Matisse-inspired decorative manner of her middle and late periods was a seamless collaboration between the constructed and the freely painted.

She exhibited locally but also fulfilled her obligations as a Royal Academician, participating in every Summer Exhibition at Burlington House, where she enjoyed a retrospective in 1994 at the newly built Sackler Galleries. An exhibition to mark Blow’s 80th birthday was held at Tate Britain last year, coinciding with the publication of a biography, Sandra Blow, by Michael Bird.

Peter Davies Peter Davies is an artist with a long-standing interest in the history of the St Ives art scene. As well as a painter and printmaker, Peter is an art critic and writer and among the 18 books on art criticism that he has written he recently published ‘St Ives Colony in Transition’ which examines this area’s key generations and traditions.

Peter writes for The Independent, and is a member of the Bath Society of Artists and Poole Printmakers.

Rose Hilton Rose Hilton, born Tonbridge , Kent, studied at Beckenham School of Art and in 1953 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London.

On her return from a year in Rome she met the artist Roger Hilton and married in 1965 and set up home together in a house on Botallack Moor, St Just, where they lived until Roger’s early death in 1975.

Rose has steadily built a reputation as a major St Ives artist. At the recent retro-spective held at Tate St Ives in January-May 2008, the paintings were chosen to reflect the increasingly abstract nature of her work, though she rarely abandons figuration entirely. Though best known for her sensual nudes and lusciously col-oured interiors, there were also landscapes on display, in which the leap towards abstraction is perhaps most apparent.

An in-depth study on Rose Hilton by Andrew Lambirth, critic for the Spectator, was published in June 2009.

Kurt JacksonKurt Jackson MA (Oxon) DLitt (Hon) RWA was born is 1961 in Blandford, Dorset. He graduated from St Peter’s College, Oxford with a degree in Zoology in 1983. While there, he spent most of his time painting and attending courses at Ruskin College of Art, Oxford. On gaining his degree he travelled extensively and independently, painting wherever he went. He travelled to the Arctic alone and hitched across Africa with his wife. This has given him a broad experience of environments and cultures which has enriched his work with a unique insight and an attention to detail. He moved to Cornwall in 1984 where he still lives and works. He has been Artist in Residence on the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, at the Eden Project and at Glastonbury Festival since 1999. He has an Honorary Doctorate (DLitt) from Exeter University and is an Honorary Fellow of St Peter’s College, Oxford University. He is an ambassador for Survival International and frequently works with Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, WaterAid, Oxfam and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Stuart KnowlesStuart was born in Redruth, Cornwall, 1948. His art studies were undertaken at Farnham School of Art and Winchester School of Art, followed by postgraduate work at the Slade School, London. His fuller story is told well by Tom CROSS in his 2002 survey volume, Catching the Wave, Contemporary Art & Artists in Cornwall. Aside from painting, Stuart has also had part-time teaching positions at Falmouth College of Art.
