Pope Francis Speaks to Families

Memory and Promise

T he memory of our elderly people

sustains us as we journey on. The

future of society, and precisely Italian socie-

ty, is rooted in the elderly and in the young:

the latter, because they have the strength and

are of the age to carry history ahead; the for-

mer, because they are a living memory, its

children, and its youth has no future, be-

cause it abuses both memory and promise.

-Message to Italian Catholics

SARATOGA RACE TRACK or CASINO!!!! DATE: AUGUST 24 - What could be better than spend-ing a day at beautiful Saratoga Racetrack? The white grandstand, lush green fields, and dusty dirt track is a summer favorite. We hope that you join us for a fun and relaxing day at the track during our upcoming bus trip. The trip takes place Monday, August 24, and tickets are $30 per person. The bus leaves St. Joe’s parking lot at 9:30 a.m. and leaves Saratoga after the last race! Or, for those of you who’d rather go to the CASINO, well, this trip is “either or”, to the RACE TRACK OR THE CASINO!!!! Please call St. Joseph Rectory for more in-formation and/or reservations.

The Piarist Fathers were founded by St. Joseph Calasanctius in Rome in 1617. In addition to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the Piarists take a fourth vow to education youth. They operate between 195 and 200 schools in 32 countries around the world. One of those schools is located in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. We are asking for your support in helping us not only in our educational work in Appalachia but also in our many outreach programs designed to help those living in poverty in the mountains. The three Piarists stationed in eastern Kentucky minister to the Catholics in four counties who number less than 1/2 of 1% of the population.

CYCLE B AUGUST 2, 2015 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"So they said to him, 'What can we do to accom-

plish the works of God?' Jesus answered and said to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.'" These fledgling believers came to Jesus seeking direction. They had witnessed his miracles, heard his teachings, and been miraculously fed by his hands. Now they wanted to know what they should do. How should they respond to the revelations they were beholding?

Most of us would expect an "active" answer to a

question like theirs. We tend to think of God's work as things like the corporal works of mercy--feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless--or the spiritual works of mercy--instructing the ignorant, comforting the afflicted, and so on. But Jesus gives a surprising answer. Instead of focusing on these external tasks, he tells the crowd that God's work is to believe in him. They should accept the gift God gave: the Son. This, apparently, is the appropriate starting point for do-ing God's work.

And really, it makes sense. If we move too quick-

ly into doing external actions, we risk not having enough interior strength behind them. Feeding the hungry is always good, but feeding the hungry as an expression of our love for Jesus is going to enable us to feed them with more compassion, more generosity, and more long-term commitment.

When faith in Jesus is foremost in our lives, then

the other important tasks that are all part of God's work will fall into place. If we love Jesus, we will nat-urally want to love his people. So let us examine the good works that we do and be sure that they have as their starting point a deep and abiding faith in the Son of God.

Rosary today, Sunday, August 2nd

after 9 AM Mass. South Chapel
