Dear St. James Parish Family,
We enter into the second week of Lent, St. Paul provides a focus for our
Lenten observances, when he writes: “Do you not know that the runners in
the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win.
Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable
crown, but we an imperishable one” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25)
Lent is a time to be reminded that our work on earth is, first and foremost,
about getting to Heaven. The Jesuit motto is Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam (All for
the Greater Glory of God). In the seminary, I remember writing these initials
on tests and papers we had to write, to create the acronym for that phrase:
AMDG. It was a little reminder that big or small, every task is meant to glorify
God. Lent is a sacred time, to recall our sacred purpose on earth, that every-
thing we do should give glory to God.
Fr. John N. Hay,
Pastor

O O D L E S o f N O O D L E S The youth of our Parish will be attending the Diocesan Catholic youth Conference
next weekend. As a service project, they are ask to bring bags and boxes of dried
pasta for the Lord’s Diner. The Diner’s singular mission is to serve a nutritious meal
with dignity and respect to anyone who is hungry. The Lord’s Diner serves an evening
meal 365 days a year. A small paid staff, assisted by more than 6,000 volunteers
representing many faiths and denominations prepare and serve a hot, nutritious meal
in a spirit of compassion, respect and loving service. It is currently serving an average
of 2,500 meals nightly at two dining facilities and three food trucks in Wichita and one
location in Pittsburg. If you can bring these noodles during the week before Friday,
that would be great. There will be a box in the foyer set up for them.
