El Camino de Santiago– (The Way of St. James)

Sarria to Santiago, Spain — A Walking Pilgrimage

April 20-29, 2020 The full “Camino” is an 8oo km (500 mile) route to Santiago de Compostela beginning in the Pyrenees Mountains in France. The full Camino takes the average person a month to complete. Not many people can take a month out of their lives to walk the entire Way. You can walk the last 100 km of the Camino Frances this Spring

and still earn your “Compostela”- the official accreditation of the pilgrimage to the Tomb of St. James. We will make this pilgrimage attainable for more people by prearranging your hotels and most meals. Your luggage will be transferred each day to the next hotel and a bus will be available to bring pilgrims to the next town if their feet and legs won’t. Fr. Grady will celebrate the Mass each day. This is a pilgrimage that enlists your mind, body, and spirit. It is virtually impossible not to return changed.

Optional Add On to Fatima,

Portugal Arguably the most amazing Marian Apparition site. In 1917 the Queen of Heaven appears for 6 consecutive months to three uneducated children from

simple farming families. These three are entrusted with visions and prophetic warnings, as well as the means to prevent God’s wrath. Visit the sites where Mary first appeared to the children, where the Angel of Peace appeared to them the previous year, the tombs of all 3 children and more. Pray the Stations of the Cross while walking the path to the first Marian apparition site, participate in the candlelight procession that Our Lady requested and be moved by the experience as so many can attest. Visit nearby Santarem and witness the bleeding host of this 13th c. Eucharistic Miracle. The message of Fatima remains very relevant today. Add this 3-day trip to your Camino for only $433 and make this trip unforgettable. PICK UP A BROCHURE IN THE NARTHEX OR

PARISH OFFICE. VISIT WWW.PILGRIMAGES.COM/FRGRADY OR CALL MARCIE (815)459-3033 WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

Apparition Hill—The Miracle of the Sun October 13, 1917

Lucia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto— the young visionaries at Fatima.

ST. JAMES THE GREATER was one of Jesus’ disciples. He worked as a fisherman with his brother John, his father Zebedee, and Simon (Peter). James, along with his

brother John, left his life as a fisherman when Jesus called him to be a “fisher of men”. After the “Great Commission” to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth, James traveled to the Iberian Peninsula (present day Spain).

In AD 40, the Blessed Virgin Mary (while she was still alive in Jerusalem) appeared to Saint James in Spain on the bank of the Ebro River at Caesaraugusta. This is the first Marian apparition known to man, and it is still revered as “Our Lady of the Pillar” in Zaragoza, Spain. Following the apparition, St. James returned to Judea, where he was beheaded by King Herod

Agrippa I in the year 44. The site of martyrdom is located within the Armenian

Apostolic Cathedral of St. James in Jerusalem. The Chapel of St. James the Great, is the traditional place where he was beheaded. His head is buried under the altar, marked by a piece of red marble and surrounded by six votive lamps.

The followers of James brought his body back to Spain to be buried. Following third century Roman persecutions in Spain, his tomb was abandoned. The tomb was rediscovered in AD 814 by the hermit Pelayo after the monk observed strange lights in the night sky (“Campus Stellae” or “Field of Stars”). The local bishop confirmed the miracle and the relics of Saint James. King Alfonso II built a shrine on the location. This is the current site of the

Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Since St. James’ remains were rediscovered, pilgrims have been making the pilgrimage to Santiago by foot from their homes establishing many routes. The traditional and most popular route is the Camino Frances. This ancient pilgrimage has surged in

popularity in recent years with over 350,000 pilgrims making “The Camino” in 2018.

Dear Parishioners,

It has been an extremely busy time for the St Vincent de Paul Ministry. Our “Friends in Need” have called on us (you) with their immediate needs for help with utility bills, rent, food, gas, car repair, and medicine.

We need your help. Would you prayerfully consider sharing your treasure and make a donation to SVdP? You can use the St. Vincent de Paul “Poor Boxes” located in the back of the church by the side doors, or the “Poor Box” located in Seton Hall near the back entrance to the Adoration Chapel. Your sacrificial gift is an answer to their prayers and a blessing to you.

“How blessed is he who considers the helpless; The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble.”

Psalm 41:1. Thank you, and may God richly bless you.

On behalf of INFORMED CHOICES WOMEN'S CENTER in Crystal Lake, I want to pass on their enormous gratitude for the generosity of our parish for both the Baby Bottle Campaign and the Spiritual Adoption Baby Shower. The Baby Bottle Campaign in the Spring brought in a record amount of funds this year, which is greatly needed for the many programs Informed Choices offers mothers, as well as the all necessary basic baby care supplies. Your prayers during our 9 month Spiritual Adoption program surely saved many souls from never having a chance to be! In addition, all of the baby shower gifts will help these new mothers care for their precious babies. The folks at Informed Choices were really blown away by the generosity from our parish! One of the ladies shared a nice story with me— She said one of the directors of Informed Choices was driving past our church with someone and he pointed to our church and said “St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is one of our very best sponsors!” <3 We are making a difference! Lives are changing for the better! Thank you all again for everything you do to help God’s most precious creations.

We warmly welcome the following newest members of our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish family:

“BEHOLD THE HEART WHICH HAS SO LOVED MANKIND!”

God will never forget our sacrifices offered out of love for others.

PLEASE JOIN US WEEKLY ON TUESDAYS FROM 1 - 2 PM

IN CHURCH FOR A HOLY HOUR OF REPARATION.

Why do we offer reparation? In 1673, The Sacred Heart of Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary: “Make reparation for the ingratitude of men. Spend an hour in prayer to appease divine justice, to implore mercy for sinners, to honor Me, to console Me for My bitter suffering when abandoned by My apostles, when they did not watch one hour with Me.” This act of love to Our Lord consoles the heart of Jesus bringing great graces and promises for those who perform them. We pray the Holy Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Chaplet of the Holy Face, praying for the intentions of our Holy Father with time for meditation. In the words of Pope St. John Paul II, "Let us take the time to kneel before Jesus present in the Eucharist, in order to make Reparation by our faith and love for the acts of carelessness and neglect, and even the insults which our Savior must endure in many parts of the world. Let us deepen through adoration our personal and communal contemplation, drawing upon aids to prayer inspired by the word of God and the experience of so many mystics, old and new. Our Holy Hours of Reparation makes up for the great faults and crimes

of the world."

MIRACLES

What are miracles? Are miracles possible and if so, how do we know? Do miracles happen and if so, what is their purpose? What attitudes should we take toward reports of miracles? How might miracles impact our prospects for future happiness? What are the perspectives of science, theology, and philosophy on miracles today?

The exploration of miracles raises some of the most important spiritual, intellectual, and personal questions that we face. An understanding of miracles is important for faith formation in churches and in the home; for personal, spiritual, and intellectual growth; and for devotions, as well as many courses in religious studies and the humanities in general today.

This inspiring film explores these questions from a Catholic perspective, informed by historical and modern discussions in science, philosophy, and theology, as well as cases of particular miracles, ancient and contemporary. It is filled with many beautiful images and stunning photography.

This beautiful ministry is a volunteer-based non-for-profit organization. Volunteers deconstruct donated wedding dresses and convert them into beautiful "angel gowns", pouches, and sacks that are used as burial garments when a baby does not make it home due to miscarriage, stillbirth or other reasons resulting in infant death. Each month, there are "Sewing Saturday" workshops held at various parishes to provide volunteers a space to create and work with others. The work does not require sewing skills, as there are many non-sewing tasks (taking dresses apart, cutting fabric, etc.) that are needed to create these gowns and accessories. The ministry is always in need of unwanted wedding gowns. If you have a wedding gown you would like to give, bring it to the parish office by 12 noon on Friday, March 20th. (the day before our parish hosts a workshop). Please see the donation guidelines on the website “Donations” page. Here are some local workshop dates/locations if you would be interested in volunteering or just going to see how it is done: July 27, 2019 9:30AM- 2:30PM ST. ISAAC JOGUES, 8149 W Golf Rd., Niles

Courage, an apostolate of the Catholic Church that ministers to persons with same-sex attractions and their loved ones.

Courage members are men and women who experience same-sex attractions and who have made a commitment to strive for chastity. They are inspired by the Gospel call to holiness and the Catholic Church’s beautiful teachings about the goodness and the inherent purpose of human sexuality.

There is a Courage chapter in the Rockford Diocese. Contact the chaplain, Fr. Phillip Kaim at [email protected] for further information.

EnCourage is an apostolate which provides pastoral care for families and friends of people who experience same-sex attractions and/or gender dysphoria. In many cases, their loved ones have adopted the LGBTQ label, and may have moved away from actively practicing their faith.

There is also an EnCourage Chapter in the Rockford Diocese. Contact their Chaplain, Fr. Ryan Browning at [email protected] for more information.

Visit the Courage web site at couragerc.org if you'd like to learn more about the Courage/EnCourage Apostolate. Also consider viewing the award-winning documentary Desire of the Everlasting Hills at everlastinghills.org.

JOIN US IN PRAYING THE MORNING PRAYERS OF THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS (ALSO KNOWN AS THE BREVIARY OR DIVINE OFFICE) EACH TUESDAY MORNING AT 8AM FOR MORNING PRAYER

From the Congregation for Divine Worship: The Liturgy of the Hours is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. Clergy and religious have a canonical obligation to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Increasingly, the laity are also praying it, though they do not do so in the name of the Church as the clergy and religious. Wherever possible, other groups of the faithful should celebrate the liturgy of the hours communally in church. This especially applies to parishes - the cells of the diocese, who "represent in some degree the visible Church established throughout the world." The faithful should bear in mind that through public worship and prayer that they can contribute significantly to the salvation of the whole world.
