Dear Parishioners of St. John, This weekend in the liturgy we celebrated the solemnity of the Baptism of our Lord. This brings an end to the season of Christmas, as the church recalls our Lord’s second manifestation which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. In one month, on February 21 we will start a 8 week RCIA program for those adults who would like to join fully our catholic faith on Holy Saturday. The classes will take place on Thursdays at 7pm at St. John. If you, or someone you know would like to be part of this process, please let Deacon Jim or myself know and we will be very happy to share the details with you. Those classes will be opened to all parishioners who would like to accompany those preparing to receive the sacraments. If you have not received your sacrament of confirmation, you may take these classes and receive the sacrament on Ho-

ly Saturday, which this year is on April 20. From the Archdiocese: “According to Archdiocesan policies lay leadership and parishioners are to be given the opportunity to recognize Fr. Karol Tybor’s gifts and to share their sentiments about his ministry. Thus, we are providing a parish-wide survey as part of his review process. The survey can be found in this bul-letin, just simply fill it out, tear the page out and mail it to the address provided on the bottom of the second page. The survey can also be easily accessed by going to the Archdiocese’s web page (https://www.archchicago.org/) and clicking on Offices and Ministries, located on the top panel. This will bring you to an alphabetical listing of offices. Under ‘M’, select Ministerial Evaluation. You will then be directed to the Ministerial Evaluation webpage. In the middle of the page, you will find “360 Catholic Leadership review for priests”. Please click on the word ‘Link’ next to your appropriate language to access the survey. The survey is available in English, Spanish, and Polish.” We are looking for more Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Altar Servers. If you would like to make a New Year’s resolution and join one of the ministries, please contact our parish office to schedule your training session. My heart is broken because of the Bears’ loss. I am happy that they played very well, and I will still continue to watch football. If you would like to join me in watching NFC/AFC Championship games on Janu-ary 20, please call the parish office with your name so I can prepare my rectory living room adequately. You will be able to enter through the rectory garden starting at 2:30 PM. Please remember to bring your favorite football snack to feed Father, and to share with others. (If there will be a lot of you coming, I might move the game to my larger room - Social Hall.) Per your request, our Fellowship will host Game night, every other Tuesday at 6pm starting with Janu-ary 22. I will host Formation Nights every other Tuesday at 7pm starting February 29. More info in the next bulletin. I will like to inform you that our new printing company is Overt Press, Inc. You should be getting your February/March envelopes soon. We are in the process of updating our parishioner data base. I recently have been communicating with parishioners via email. If you would like to receive communication from our office electronically, please provide us with your email. Please return the bottom of this page by mail or simply drop in the collection basket. Let us continue to keep each other in prayers, Fr. GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from generation to generation. They had been conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with ex-pectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ." They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said profound things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be dis-appointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gath-ered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Baptist may have em-braced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gen-tleness and power all at once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'" Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for?

Youth Squad Volunteers at Soup Kitchen

On Saturday, January 5th, members of our Youth Squad once again volunteered their time at a Chi-cago soup kitchen, hosted by our friends from St. Christina church. Working with Deacon Stanley Rakauskas, the Youth Squad members greeted and served the guests soup, then worked to sort clothes that guests are able to choose from. Thank you to our parishioners, we were able to donate over 900 men’s and women’s shirts, several bedding materials and suitcases/bags. We are happy and grateful that our young adults have the opportunity to share their ministry work with others, and will continue to do so throughout the year. We’ll keep you updated on other projects they get involved in. Thank you for always supporting our Youth Squad.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it rep-resents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gos-pel reading is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most oth-er ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life‑giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since “today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. —James Field, Copyright © J.
