Sunday Reflection 4 August 2019
This past week was filled with the memorials of some wonderful saints. Today I would like to share a form of prayer that was initiated by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). It is a prayer form that is used widely today. The prayer form is called The Daily Examen. This is different from an examination of conscience which is done in preparation to experience the Sac-rament of Reconciliation. The Examen is meant for the individual to engage in di-alog with God about their day and seek guidance for the next day. St. Ignatius de-veloped this method of prayer and taught it to his brother Jesuits so that they might better discern the will of God and be mindful of God’s action in their lives. This is especially helpful as a prayer exercise right before you go to sleep. Here is a simple ver-sion of the prayer:
Find a place where you can be at peace and have quiet. You can be sitting or kneeling, but try to find a position where you are alert and attentive.
Begin with a short phrase of Scripture to help center yourself. Some examples: “If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.” Ps. 95 “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” Ps. 23 “The Lord is my light and my salvation, of whom should I be afraid?” Ps. 27 “Only in God is my soul at rest.” Ps. 62
Then slowly reflect on your day, beginning with getting up in the morning all the way through to right now. Focus on the moments that you treated people with goodness and kindness.
When was I generous? When was I patient? How did I help people? When did I show mercy or speak kindly?
As those moments come to mind, give God thanks for all the ways in which you responded to his invitation to be like Christ.
Then, go over your day once more. This time focus on the moments when you did not treat people with kindness and mercy.
When was I harsh in speech or action? When did I ignore someone in need? When did I think ill or pass on gossip? Was I envious of someone?
As each of those moments comes to mind, ask God forgiveness for not being his instrument of peace and ask for the grace to do better the next day.
As you finish, give thanks to God once more for having received the blessing of another day and make a promise to be more mindful of God’s call tomorrow.

Esta semana pasada la Iglesia nos presentó las memoriales de varios santos mara-villosos. Hoy, quiero compartir ustedes una forma de oración que inició San Igna-cio de Loyóla, el fundador de la Sociedad de Jesús (los Jesuitas). Es una forma que se usa en varias partes del mundo, por laícos, religiosos y cleros. Se llama El Exámen Diario. Este es diferente del exámen de consciencia que se hace ántes de vivir el Sacramento de Reconciliación. El Exámen nos ayuda de encontrar la pres-encia del Señor cada día y de discernir su voluntad. San Ignacio desarrolló esta forma de orar y enseñó a sus hermanos jesuitas para su discernimiento. En espe-cial esta forma de oración nos ayuda al fin del día ántes de dormir. Aquí les presento una forma sencilla de la oración:
Busca un lugar con paz y calma. Pueden sentarse o arrodillarse pero favor de tomar una posición que les ayude mantener alerto y atento.
Comienzen con una frase de la Escritura para centrarse. Algunos ejemplos: “Si hoy escuchas la voz de Dios, no endurezca el corazón.” Sal. 95 “El Señor is mi Pastor, nada me falta.” Sal. 23 “El Señor es mi luz y mi salvación, ¿a quién temeré?” Sal. 27 “Sólo en Dios descansa mi alma.” Sal. 62
Reflecciona lentamente sobre tu día, comenzando con despertarse en la manaña hasta que ahora. Fíjate en los momentos en que tú actuaba con amor:
¿Cuándo fui generoso? ¿Paciente? ¿Cómo ayudé a mi prójimo? ¿Cuándo me com-portaba con misericordia o hablé bien al otro?
Mientras piensas de ésto, da gracias a Dios por toda manera en que tu respondiste a server al prójimo como Jesús.
Reflecciona sobre tu día de nuevo, fijando en los momentos en que no trataste a tu prójimo bien.
¿Cuándo era yo duro en palabra o acción con la gente? ¿Cuándo di la espalda a al-guien en su necesidad? ¿Pasé los chismes o pensé mal de alguien? ¿Tenía envidia?
Mientras que piensas en esto, pide perdón de Dios por no ser su instrumento de paz e invoca al Señor por la gracia de mejorar mañana.
En fin, agradece al Señor por haber recibido la bendición de un nuevo día y haz promesa de
estar más atento a su presencia mañana. Termina la oración con Gloria al Padre, y al Hijo…
