God has Given Us a New Pastor: It’s Time to Celebrate!

The Rite of Installation Service for Pastor Knowles is set for Sunday-August 16, 2020 at 3pm. Based on lack

of availability of other facilities and general gathering restrictions, it has been decided that the service will take

    place at church.

Inasmuch as seating capacity will be limited to 60-75 people, it is extremely important that our members

RSVP to [email protected] or phone Nancy Ells at 716-549-2114 with the number attending.

To ensure that we can maintain proper social distancing, participation will be on a first-come-first serve basis.

We look forward to seeing everyone there but we will also be streaming the service on Facebook Live in case

you cannot attend in person. Due to the current participation limitations, we hope to plan a larger celebration

later when everyone can be accommodated safely and enjoyably.

The service for this Ninth Sunday of Pentecost is being recorded at 10:30am and will be available on our website and YouTube channel typically by Monday evening.

    1. COMMUNION CHANGES: We’ve made adjustments based on your feedback. Please follow these guidelines:

    • Register for communion upon arrival in the Narthex so that we can have the appropriate amount of wine and wafers available and avoid any waste.

    • Self-serve wine and wafer - No common cup distribution

    • Distribution “in the round” - Usher-directed single line in the center aisle

    • Maintain appropriate social distancing when in line

    • Wear your face covering when approaching and leaving the altar

    • Receive communion, proceed to the pedestal positioned at the appropriate corner of the altar, remove your face covering and consume the bread and wine there

    • Dispose of your empty wine cup in the baskets provided on the pedestal at the appropriate corner of the altar

    • Blessing and dismissal at the conclusion of distribution

    • Watch this video and learn about the changes we're making to provide holy communion while keeping everyone safe: https://bit.ly/3dUWG34.

    2. FEELING SAFE IN THE SANCTUARY: We have necessary precautions in place for your participation but if you do not currently feel comfortable and choose not to attend, we fully understand and appreciate your concerns. If you cannot be with us in person, be sure to watch online after the service and let us know how we can keep you connected to our church family. Here are a few reminders of our new "rules of engagement" for worship services:

    • If you are ill or not feeling well, please refrain from attending until you feel better or are cleared medically. You can continue to watch the worship services online.

    • Unless otherwise necessary, please enter the church through the narthex door

    • Please wear an appropriate face covering when entering and leaving the church, and around others who may not be comfortable without everyone wearing masks

    • Hand sanitizer is available for your convenience on the table in the Narthex and at other locations throughout the sanctuary. All horizontal surfaces in the sanctuary and balcony are sanitized prior to worship.

    • Please sit in staggered half-pews where a tissue box and bulletins are present, and sit only with your family unit (or with other congregants you consider family), or where all parties are comfortable sitting near each other

    • The choice is yours whether to remove your mask while seated in your pew during the service

    • Unless otherwise necessary, please leave the sanctuary through the door to the education building for fellowship in the basement after the worship service. Pastor will greet you there.

    3. IN SERVICE: So much has changed in the past three months since we've been together, so rather than assume that everyone who was previously serving in various capacities in the church prior to the pandemic (such as readers, altar guild, ushers and greeters, etc.) is still interested – we're asking everyone to complete our online form: https://stjohnangola.wordpress.com/outreach/in-service-to-god/ to indicate the area(s) you'd like to serve in. Printed versions of the sign-up form can be found in the pews and on the table at the back of the sanctuary as well. We know that there are new and existing members also interested in stepping up to serve, so we will rebuild our committee and rotational lists for Sunday services based on the feedback we get from your form submissions. We will also start re-establishing lists and payments for altar flowers and the eternal flame oil soon.

    4. PLEASE GIVE: You may drop your offering envelope or donation in the collection plates located in the front and the back of the church, mail your offering to the church or make secure donations via PayPal or common credit cards such as MasterCard, Visa, American Express & Discover on our website at stjohnangola.org. Our "Giving" page outlines other ways of contributing.

    Confession and Absolution Stand

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

    C Amen.

P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C who made heaven and earth.

P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P O almighty God, merciful Father,

C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You

and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely

repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter

sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful

    being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the

grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your

sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

    C Amen.

P They asked, and he | brought quail,*

Salutation and Collect of the Day P The Lord be with you.

    C And with thy spirit.

    P Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, though we do not deserve Your goodness, still You provide for all our needs of body and soul.

Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your gifts, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You

in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and forever.

    Old Testament Reading Isaiah 55:1–5

    1“Come, everyone who thirsts,

    come to the waters;

and he who has no money,

    come, buy and eat!

    Come, buy wine and milk

without money and without price. 2Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,

and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,

    and delight yourselves in rich food. 3Incline your ear, and come to me;

    hear, that your soul may live;

and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,

my steadfast, sure love for David. 4Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,

a leader and commander for the peoples. 5Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,

and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,

because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,

    for he has glorified you.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

    C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 9:1–13 1I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2that I have

great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ

for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption,

the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5To them belong the patriarchs, and from

their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7and

not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are

counted as offspring. 9For this is what the promise said: “About this time next year I will return and Sarah shall have a

son.” 10And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11though they

were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue,

not because of works but because of his call— 12she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13As it is written,

“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

A This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God. Stand

Alleluia LSB 190 C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel Matthew 14:13–21 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourteenth chapter.

C Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

13Now when Jesus heard [about the death of John], he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself.

But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore he saw a great crowd,

and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said,

“This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for

themselves.” 16But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17They said to him, “We have

only five loaves here and two fish.” 18And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down

on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the

loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And they all ate and were satisfied.

And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men,

    besides women and children.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Apostles’ Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

    born of the virgin Mary,

    suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

    He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

    He ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    the holy Christian Church,

    the communion of saints,

    the forgiveness of sins,

    the resurrection of the body,

and the life T everlasting. Amen.

    Service of the Sacrament

Preface LSB 194 P The Lord be with you.

    C And with thy spirit.

    P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them up unto the Lord.

P Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God.

C It is meet and right so to do.

P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord,

almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, out of love for His fallen creation,

humbled Himself by taking on the form of a servant, becoming obedient unto death, even death upon a cross.

Risen from the dead, He has freed us from eternal death and given us life everlasting. Therefore with angels and

archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You

    and saying:

    Sanctus LSB 195 C Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

heav’n and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Lord’s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven,

    hallowed be Thy name,

    Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

    as it is in heaven;

    give us this day our daily bread;

    and forgive us our trespasses

    as we forgive those

    who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

    but deliver us from evil.

    For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

    forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord LSB 197 P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it

and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in

    remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying:

“Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of

sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini LSB 197 P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

    C Amen.

Distribution Communion will be shared “in the round.” An usher will motion for you to proceed to the center aisle to receive

communion from Pastor at the table placed in front of the altar. Please wear your face covering and maintain appropriate

social distancing while waiting in line.

Take the wafer from the clear tray and the wine cup from the silver tray while being considerate not to touch the other

hosts or wine cups. Receive communion, proceed to the pedestal positioned at the appropriate corner of the altar, remove

Dispose of your empty wine cup in the baskets provided on the pedestals at the side of the altar. Return to your seat via
