Divine Mercy Sunday Acts 2:42-47 1. Share about someone in your life who you know is passionate about something they do or something they believe in. 2. The early Christian Church attracted believers because of the way they lived. What do you think attracts people to the Church today? 3. In what ways does your life witness to your faith in such a way as to attract others? In what ways could your own witness be better?

My Dear Friends,

On Easter Sunday we gathered (albeit virtually) to celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Death itself could not keep our Lord from us; the tomb could not contain or squelch his love. Today, it is fear that stands between the disciples and the Lord. We read that on the evening of the day of the resurrection, the disciples gathered together in a room with locked doors, “for fear of the Jews.” It was fear that had caused them to flee on the night of Jesus’ arrest.

Just as the tomb could not keep Jesus in, the doors locked in fear cannot keep him out, and he suddenly stands in their midst. His first words to those who had deserted him during his passion might be considered surprising. He says to them, “Peace be with you.” Not only does he bear no re-proach, he entrusts the gathered disciples with a new mission: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Freed from their fear, the disciples are now called to bring this peace to others, specifically through the forgiveness of sins.

In the last line of today’s Gospel reading, John tells us the motivation behind the words he has written – that his readers might come to believe. Unlike Thomas, who believes only after seeing the risen Jesus for himself, we encounter our Lord in other ways. Through the words of the gospel and the sacraments of the Church, we are able to hear, see, and touch, the one who calls us to live life abundantly. The gifts of the Word of God and the sacraments have been passed down from generation to generation by the disciples of Jesus. They have been safeguarded and cherished by our ancestors in faith. May we now do our part so that others, too, might come to belief.

This is the eighth day of the fifty days of Easter. Every one of those days celebrates the divine mercy that reaches out to save the world, and of which we become ministers by faith through the sacraments of Christian Initiation. The Di-vine Mercy is not a new solemnity or feast, nor does it cele-brate a new or separate mystery of redemption, but rather it leads into the continuing celebration of God’s mercy during Easter time. As the Octave Day of Easter, the readings and prayers highlight the mystery of divine compassion that un-derlies the Church’s Easter faith. How will you renew your baptismal promises this Easter to be people of mercy?

Within our own lives we can recognize the Lord at work. As human beings we will sin, fail, and even at times run away from our God and the work he has called us to do. And yet, with divine mercy, the Lord never ceases to call us back, offering peace to counteract our fear and forgiveness to wipe away our sins. As people who have received these gifts of peace and mercy, we are then sent forth to bear them to the world. Your Brother in Christ, Jesse Schuler Director of Worship
