Reflection on Today’s Readings

Today’s Gospel points to the centrality of love in our Christian understanding of God and how we are to live in God’s presence. Indeed, St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, “Nothing shows the truth of the gospel better than the love of those who believe.” It is love that has the power to convince others of the truth of the message that Christians bear. But love can do this only if it is genuine, since we know that there are many counterfeit forms of love abroad in our world. So how do we know that our love is the kind of love that truly reveals God?

Our first reading gives one clue. Godly love is always deeply concerned about the weak, the defenseless, the marginalized—those whom the Old Testament refers to as the “anawim” or “little ones.” These include the foreigner living among us, the widow, the orphan, and the poor, all of whom are the object of God’s passionate concern. So if our love is to be a godly love, it must be a love that acts in such a way that the needs of these little ones are of paramount importance.

Our second reading gives another clue. Paul speaks of how the Thessalonians “became imitators of us and of the Lord,” both in their affliction and in their joy, and so “became a model for all the believers.” In other words, love that is genuine takes the suffering, joyful love of Christ and the saints as its model. Godly love not only cares for the vulnerable, but does so both at personal cost and joyfully.

The task of discerning the path of genuine love is challenging, but in teaching us the importance of defending the defenseless and in providing us models of love to imitate, God helps us to stay on that path.

“God of love, help us to search out the path that truly leads to you, by following the examples of love that you have given to us, above all the example of your Son, our Lord, Jesus. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Whoever sacrifices to any god, save to the Lord only, shall be utterly destroyed.” - Exodus 22: 20

Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? If so, you may want to pay attention to the scripture reading because you are not going to like the outcome. The good news—it’s not too late to put God first in your life.

Our Sunday Offering: Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014—$15,460.23 Sept. 29, 2013—$14,974.50

Thank you!

Did you know? Transfiguration Academy is proud to be part of the largest network of Catholic private schools in the United States. Total United States Catholic elementary, middle, and high school enrollment for the academic year is over two million boys and girls. 99% of Catholic secondary school students graduate and 84.7% go on to college, compared to approximately 44.1% of public school graduates. Parents choose Catholic schools for any and all of the following reasons: faith formation, high academic standards, values added education, and safe school environment. Transfiguration Academy is an all inclusive, welcoming learning community. While 74.2% of students enrolled in Catholic elementary/middle and secondary schools nationwide are Caucasian, Transfiguration’s minority and multi-racial population approaches nearly 66%. Based on the average public school cost of over $12,000 per pupil, Catholic schools provide nearly 23 billion dollars a year in savings for U. S. taxpayers. Tuition paid by families constitutes a portion of the actual per pupil expenses. The average pupil tuition in parish elementary schools is approximately 62.2% of actual cost of almost $6,200 to educate a single student. About 93.9% of elementary schools, including Transfiguration, provide some form of tuition assistance. The difference between the per pupil cost and the tuition charged is obtained in many ways, primarily through subsidies from parishes and the Archdiocese, diocesan or religious congregation resources and from multi-faceted development programs and fundraising activities. Invest in your child’s future! Enroll in Transfiguration Academy, a leader in academic excellence. For information or to tour the school and discuss our award winning programs, call 201-384-3627.
