Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most solemn week of the Church Year. I invite you to participate in as many of the spiritual opportunities which this week offers to grow more deeply in your appreciation of God’s Love for YOU through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The full schedule appears as a flyer in today’s bulletin and on the parish website.

The other flyer in today’s bulletin asks you to consider electronic giving for your Sunday and other offerings. Please follow the instructions on the flyer to set up your account if you are so inclined. Whether electronically or in the basket, we appreciate all your sacrifices to help our parish in its many outreach ministries!

+++

Please consider making a pledge to this year’s “Sharing God’s Blessings” Annual Appeal. It also helps support our parish ministries as well as Archdiocesan apostolates. Current pledges total $41,334.00. Our parish goal is $92,953.00. PLEASE HELP THIS YEAR! Forms are available in the pews and in the rectory.

+++

We have received extra copies of the April issue of New Jersey Catholic to introduce the archdiocesan magazine to those of you who have not already found it a great source of information and inspiration. In the magazine, you will find stories of how archdiocesan Catholics live their faith, informative articles about our religion and practical advice on how to apply our faith to our personal relationships as well as at home and work. Every month also brings a parish profile, fascinating tidbits about the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and a crossword.

Annual subscriptions are $23 for 10 issues of New Jersey Catholic AND 6 printed issues of The Catholic Advocate, the archdiocesan newspaper, which carries traditional local news and happenings. If our supply runs out before you get a copy, you can view the sample issue on the archdiocesan website www.rcan.org. Enrich your faith by making a place for good Catholic literature in your home.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Are you somone who serves or seeks to be served? Are you more attentive to others, yourself, or both? In Luke’s Passion narrative, Jesus says, “Let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant.” Jesus lives as one who serves. He feeds the disciples with his body and blood. He heals those who arrest him. He prays that God’s will be done. He continues to teach while in agony in the garden. He prepares Peter before his betrayal of Jesus. He is neither defensive nor combative before Herod and Pilate. He attends to the women of Jerusalem and welcomes the so-called good thief. Finally he commends his spirit into God’s hands. Throughout his passion Jesus serves others and God. Like the servant of God in Isaiah who did not turn back but set his face like flint to speak God’s word, Jesus empties himself, like God’s self-emptying in becoming human.

Unlike Jesus, the disciples serve themselves out of fear that they might suffer the same fate as Jesus, and out of fear of the crowd’s reaction. They keep their distance. Herod and Pilate do not want to lose power. Simon must be forced into service, and even Joseph of Arimathea comes to Jesus’ aid only after the crucifixion. It is the centurion who announces Jesus’ innocence.

We should want to have Jesus’ other-centeredness in the face of rejection and ridicule. But when we’re honest, we know that we keep quiet too often in order to avoid both. We are more concerned about defending ourselves than humbly submitting to the example Jesus offered. During this week we call holy, watch Jesus. Listen to his words. Note his example and let the Lord God be your help so that we might commend our spirits to God and learn to serve in all circumstances.

“Almighty God, you took on every human limitation with the exception of sin. Give us courage to follow Jesus even when it is not easy, so that our lives might reveal the power that comes from committing ourselves totally to your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me.” Luke 22:34

How many times have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about Jesus or the Catholic faith? How do you react? Do you remain quiet not to cause a disturbance or worst yet, because you don’t want your friends or family to think negatively about you? Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a respectful dialogue.
