2016 Lenten Regulations 1. The days of both “Fast and Abstinence” during Lent are

Ash Wednesday, February 10th and Good Friday, March 25th. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night, March 26th) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ouselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.

The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. 2. On a day of *Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted and two smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. **Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of *Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. **Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 14th, 2016 to the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 22, 2016.

Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, members of our NeoCatechumenal Way will begin visiting all homes in our parish boundaries with a message of God’s Love, starting this Saturday morning in the southwest section of our parish. They will be approaching every household, parishioner or not, to share this good news! Kindly welcome them when they come to your house!

The Archdiocesan Women’s Commission Day of Reflection will be held Saturday, February 27th at Seton Hall University. This year’s theme is “Alive in Christ: Celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy.” The English track will feature Leah Darrow and Sr. Miriam James Heidland, SOLT. They will share their amazing stories of mercy, healing and the infinite love of Jesus Christ. Both women were on the path to the good life, achieving dream-like levels of success in their worldly pursuits. Yet both young women realized their success wasn’t bringing true happiness and each was called from the worldly path to radical conversion. The Spanish track will feature Mother Adela Galindo, SCTJM. The day runs from 9am to 1:30pm, with doors opening at 8am.

The Archdiocesan Catholic Men’s Conference will be held Saturday, March 5 at Seton Hall University. This year’s theme is “Be Not Afraid: Trust in His Mercy!” Speakers for the English track will be Patrick Madrid, best-selling author of “Why Be Catholic?” and radio host of his own show on the Immaculate Heart Radio Network, and Gus Lloyd, host of Seize the Day radio show on the Catholic Channel XM Radio. Spanish track speakers will be Monsignor Willie Peña, from the Archdiocese of San Juan, PR, and Deacon Asterio Velasco, Coordinator for the Hispanic Apostolate in the Archdiocese of Newark. The day runs from 9am to 1:30 pm, with the doors opening at 8 am.

Registration for both events is $20. Priests and religious are free. The day includes continental breakfast and holy Mass. For registration, please visit www.rcan.org/womenscommission (WOMEN) or www.rcanmenscommission.org (MEN), speak to Mary Cox or Deacon Jim, or call 973-497-4545.

Our pre-pledge and first weekend’s in-pew pledges for this year’s “Sharing God’s Blessings” Annual Appeal total $23,781.00. Our parish goal is $92,953.00. Although there is no specific stretch goal this year, for us to receive at least $50,000.00 in rebates from the Annual Appeal, we need to reach $173,598.16. I personally invite EVERY PARISH FAMILY to make some gift to this year’s Annual Appeal, whether you are a previous or new contributor. PLEASE HELP THIS YEAR!

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

All our readings this weekend express how God is with His people, in times of difficulty and in times of bounty. He is there to reassure, to strengthen, to guide, and to save. Lent is our forty-day experience to recall the story of God’s saving love affair with us and to grow in gratitude for mercy so near. God’s Word is near to us. We name the sin and darkness that tempt us to trust what is not God when what we really need to do is to invite God to be with us in our trouble and heal us. Feeding on the word of God and the liturgy can guide us to live the death and resurrection of Jesus more clearly this year.

Name the ways that you have known God’s love throughout your life. Face whatever gets in the way of believing that God’s Spirit dwells within you. Cry out to the Lord our God in honesty, faith, gratitude, and need. The Word is near you. May it help you grow more grateful for God’s unconditional and merciful love and experience God’s nearness this Lent.

“God, our mercy, feed me with Your Word and Sacrament this Lent. Help my worship of You deepen my trust that You are with me, so that I see You in all creation and make Your nearness known to all. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” Deut. 26: 10

This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your “first fruits,” the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is left over? Second, do you remember that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day.
