The pilgrimage will take place under the leadership of Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Buses will leave from local parish churches and return the same day. The feature of the day will be a rosary devotion and concelebrated Mass in the Basilica of the National Shrine. Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

There is still an opportunity for the men of our parish to participate in our Men’s Cornerstone Retreat this Friday and Saturday, September 27-28. Applications must be submitted to the rectory by Monday evening! Please take one at the exits of the church.

Next weekend, Khaled Sabat of Bethlehem Handicrafts will be returning to our parish to display once again the olive wood religious articles handmade by their Christian community in Bethlehem, the Holy Land. They seek your love and support in purchasing something when they come. Your help can and will make a difference in the lives of your brothers and sisters in Bethlehem.

Starting in mid-October, our parish will join those throughout our Archdiocese in a six week prayer and discussion group series called “Healing our Church.” Developed by RENEW International, Cardinal Tobin has agreed to have the Archdiocese split the cost with our parishes so that as many as possible may benefit from this valuable tool to help us in dealing with the Clergy Sex Abuse Crisis. I was privileged to be one of the consultants in the formulation of the discussion guide, and I strongly urge you to consider becoming part of one of our groups. See the flyer in today’s bulletin for more information.

Also, Cardinal Tobin will be holding county meetings with parishioners next month. We are still waiting for the date for our county in either early or late October, but the place will be in the auditorium of St. Peter the Apostle Parish, River Edge.

Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings. When Jacob Marley appears to Ebenezer Scrooge at the beginning of A Christmas Carol, he wears a long chain, clasped around his middle, “made of cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel.” He tells Scrooge that he wears the chain he forged in life, and now he wanders the earth because in life his spirit never went beyond “the narrow limits of our money-changing hole.” Old Marley’s life had been about money until it ended; now he pays the price.

Luke calls on his community to consider its use of money. In today’s parable a steward has been caught squandering his master’s property. Seeing that his days are numbered, the steward acts quickly to ensure that he will have friends at the end. Surprisingly, the master commends him for “acting prudently.” Jesus then comments that the children of this world have more gumption than the children of light, using their money to make friends.

Three other comments follow: Use money to make friends for eternity; trustworthiness in small matters and earthly wealth will lead to being trusted with true wealth, i.e. God’s kingdom; and you have to choose between God and “mammon” (whatever holds your deepest trust other than God). In a nutshell, use your money to serve; allow God to save.

Jesus is in line with the prophet Amos, who castigates the businessmen of his day for cheating the poor and needy. God is on the side of these little ones. They are the ones we are to befriend by using our money for their good. Jesus, who came as a “ransom for all” (1 Timothy 2:4), is our true wealth.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“No servant can serve two masters. He will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth).“ Luke 16:13

Is money a “god” that you put before God? Giving money to support the Church and other charity is a pillar of our faith, just like attending Mass every Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Giving money frees us from being a slave to money. It increases our dependence on God and our trust that God will provide all that we need.
