November 6 2016 Ordinary Time Thirty-second Sunday
Todayrsquos readings 2 Maccabees 71-2 9- 14 2 Thessalonians 216ndash 35 Luke 2027- 38
There they go again ndash trying to trap Jesus They hadnrsquot trapped
him with the question of giving tribute to Caesar so they tried
again Jesus had preached about eternal life the Sadducees did
not believe in life after death So they (rather cleverly you have to
admit) presented him with the contrived story in which a woman
is widowed seven times each time remarrying a brother of the
same family They want Jesus to admit that this woman would
have had seven husbands ndash that was against the law and couldnrsquot
be allowed by God in the afterlife Obviously they conclude
there can be no afterlife
Of course Jesus saw through their scheme He offers them
a counter challenge citing the only authority the Sadducees
accepted ndash Moses Jesus notes that when God appeared to Moses in
the burning bush God was identified as the God of the patriarchs
Abraham Isaac and Jacob Though they had been dead for centuries if God is truly the
God of the living they must somehow be alive
Jesus then explained that everlasting life is not merely a continuation of life on
earth but an entirely new mode of existence where marriage to perpetuate the human race
is no longer necessary Those who rise to be with God forever are children of God
brothers and sisters of Jesus who lived and died and rose again for us

Fair Trade does not take place outside the free-trade system The participation of everyone in the Fair Trade system - producers companies and consumers - is voluntary and based on a set of mutually
accepted standards that are monitored by third parties In addition Fair Trade connects us direct-ly with producers around the world We know something about the conditions under which they work We know that they have direct long-term relationships with the Fair Trade organizations that buy their products and sell them to us And we know the benefits we create for them and their communities through our purchase of their products

While living in
Philadelphia I met peace activist Kathy Kelly She had been part of a peace delegation to Iraq during the American invasion Her delegation met with numerous Iraqi families to understand their experience of the war She related how connecting with the everyday people of Iraq was a profound experience They wanted peace badly She also explained of how the peace delegation would engage in nonviolent resistance to the American military Some would sit down to pray in the middle of a highway and refuse to move Tanks could not pass The peace delegation did not however harangue the soldiers They befriended them and lis-tened to their stories as well Her visit to Iraq im-pressed me so much that I wondered how I might prac-tice nonviolence in my own life The God of the living who Jesus reveals in todayrsquos Gospel reading is a God who does not use violence Jesus teaches practices and embodies nonviolence God in Jesus summons us to do the practice of nonviolence in our own lives The God of the living does not desire death as Jesus tells the Sad-ducees God does not desire death God does not de-sire anything leading to death All violence involves death of some kind Violence kills emotionally or spir-itually just as much as it kills physically
Our culture overflows with violence We falsely
believe war weapons and might bring peace They never do History proves this repeatedly Rome subju-gated various peoples only to fall by various barbarian raids Christendom launched a crusade against Islam and lost not only countless lives but also moral authori-ty The United States has bombed the Middle East al-most continuously over the past decades When our military causes death and destruction some of the vic-tims become the next terrorists A vengeful spirit solid-ifies among them Then they set off bombs in airports or shoot people in normally peaceful neighbor-hoods This causes America to deal with terrorists vio-lently yet again Our military bombings provoke ter-rorist bombings Violence only creates more violence
Of course the past century witnessed two prime examples of nonviolence in Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr
These nonviolent pillars knew the high price we pay for war poverty and interpersonal violence such as insults complaints and gossip King once said ldquoThe choice is not between violence and nonvio-lence but between nonviolence and nonexistencerdquo If we donrsquot choose nonviolence according to Dr King violence might consume us
There are other lesser known examples of nonvio-
lence in the world today Kathy Kelly shared some of those examples with me in Philadelphia years ago The image of a man confronting military power by sitting down praying and physically blocking tank movement struck me in a particularly powerful way I wanted to do something similar I thought of all the mystics of the Catholic Church and the power they could bring to such a nonviolent demonstra-tion Through Kathyrsquos impactful story I was reminded of the Gospelrsquos inherent connection between social jus-tice and mystical prayer
If I am to live nonviolence I must be absorbed in the
God of Jesus Nonviolence flows from being absorbed in the God of Jesus Christ who is peace mercy and love Absorption in God means to be totally consumed with the Presence of God through interior silence and passionate love Absorption in God is mystical pray-er St Elizabeth of the Trinity describes mystical pray-er ldquoI so love this mystery of the Holy TrinityhellipIt is an abyss in which I lose myselfrdquo Such mystical prayer transformed her into a person of deep peace St Eliza-bethrsquos message of being absorbed in the mysterious abyss of the Holy Trinity is but one example of the foundation for an active creative nonviolence This is the way of all the Christian mystics
It is this type of prayer that is the root of nonviolence
for it is the power by which we connect with God who heals all our internal violence Through mystical pray-er God transforms our minds and hearts so that we might put on the mind of Christ and live the values of the kingdom of God One of these essential values that characterizes the mind of Christ is nonviolence It af-fects how we treat ourselves and others Nonviolence leads us to commit to the worldwide grassroots move-ment for peace among all people Jesus says the God of the living desires the life and flourishing of all peo-ple To believe in the God of the living is to commit oneself to active nonviolence

Hurricane Relief -
An Update
Thank you for your generosity in responding to the devastating effects of Hurricane Matthew on Baraderes Despite the devastation the people of Baraderes are working hard to bring back some normalcy into their lives
With your help we raised over $99000 We received donations from individuals churches schools businesses organizations both locally and nationally Most donors are happy to support our efforts because they are aware that 100 of their donation goes directly to Baraderes In speaking with Fr Jean-Philippe last week he has assured us that he will be able to safely retrieve the money we wire
We are sending the money in phases as the people of Baraderes start the tedious process of rebuilding
Cndash 4 Thank you for your Support
Thank you to everyone who donated time talent and funds to assist C-4 in strengthening our community by providing clothing school supplies and other services directly to people in need
C-4 includes the Clothes Closet Baby Closet and Toy Closet It operates like a department store except that all of the items are donated and there is no charge to the customers Free clothing baby equipment school supplies and Christmas toys are supplied to many of Montgomery Countyrsquos poorest residents C-4 relies upon the kindness and generosity of 20 member congregations including ours for funding donations and volunteers
Save the Date
C-4 Toy Collection amp Mass will be held at 500 pm on December 3 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church

Here at SJB we expose our students to many different forms of technology which help them across the curriculum In the computer lab our students use desktop computers for researching writing and creating Through the generous support of many including parents and parishioners we are able to bring iPads into the classroom for instruction and further learning Thank you
All areas of the curriculum benefit from the state of the art technology at SJB Seventh grade Social Studies students are using technology in a fun way by creating a public service announcement about the Great Lakes After a lively debate about the problems of pollution invasive species and habitat loss the students are taking the information learned writing a script collecting images and narrating their PSA After editing and adding music and transitions their final projects will be persuasive and informative The technology that exists at SJB enhances learning across the curriculum We invite you to stop by and take a peek into our computer lab
