and the True Cross a book this is the exciting sto-

ry of St. Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine,

who found the Cross of Christ in Jerusalem. This

book, originally written for young people but loved by

readers of all ages, paints a vivid portrait of a remark-

able woman who overcame every obstacle with faith,

hope, perseverance, and a healthy dose of ambition.

The story describes the amazing events that led to the

conversion of Helena and the rise to power of her son.

He also recounts the vision Constantine experienced on

the eve of a pivotal battle and his subsequent legaliza-

tion of Christianity in the fourth century. The story dra-

matically concludes with St. Helena's final accomplish-

ment--her dangerous and miraculous expedition to the

Holy Land.

THREE KINDS OF GIVERS: TRES CLASES DE GIRADOR

Someone has said, there are three kinds of givers -- the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb. To get anything out of a flint you must hammer it. And then you get only chips and sparks. To get water out of a sponge you must squeeze it, and the more you use pressure, the more you will get. But the honeycomb just overflows with its own sweetness. Which kind of giver are you?

SJB is My Family During Mass we pray the Penitential prayer and we say: “…and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.” We are asking everyone to pray for us. This is an important part of being a community of the faithful. Ten families are recognized each week in the Mass with prayers for whatever their needs might be. You are also invited to pray for them throughout the week, remember-ing that our Lord has said “Bear one another’s bur-dens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). When God has lightened your burdens, He asks you to do the same for others. We don’t always know what bur-dens others may have, and they may wish to keep their burdens private. But we can pray that their needs be met and that God’s mercy be upon them, that they may know they are beloved of God and an important part of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church community. This week we pray for the following individuals and fami-lies:

Liturgy Corner compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook

It is important to read today’s Gospel and next

week’s Gospel as two parts of a single story. These

readings are a turning point in Matthew’s Gospel.

This week we hear Jesus name Simon Peter as the

rock upon which he will build his Church. Next week

we will hear Jesus call this same Simon Peter

"Satan" when he reacts negatively to Jesus’ predic-

tion about his passion and death. In today’s Gospel,

Jesus asks his disciples what people are saying

about his identity. The disciples indicate that most

people believe that Jesus is a prophet of Israel. Then

Jesus asks his disciples who they believe that he is.

Simon Peter answers, identifying Jesus as the Mes-

siah, the Son of God. Peter’s recognition of Jesus’

identity is credited to a revelation by God. This will

contrast sharply with Jesus’ rebuke of Peter in next

week’s Gospel. When Peter rejects Jesus’ prediction

of his passion and death, Peter is said to no longer

be thinking as God does but as humans do. The use

of the term church in today’s Gospel is one of only

three such occurrences in Matthew’s Gospel. Peter

in this Gospel is being credited as the foundation for

the Church, a privilege granted to him because of his

recognition of Jesus’ identity. The Church continues

to be grounded in the faith that Jesus Christ is

Lord. What Jesus calls “my Church” is the kingdom

promised to David’s son. As we hear in today’s First

Reading, Isaiah foretold that the keys to David’s

kingdom would be given to a new master, who would

rule as father to God’s people. Jesus, the root and

offspring of David, alone holds the kingdom’s keys.

In giving those keys to Peter, Jesus fulfills that

prophecy, establishing Peter—and all who succeed

him—as holy father of His Church. Peter—and all

who succeed him—as holy father of His Church. In

the second reading Paul marvels that we cannot

know God’s mind, but we do know that everything

come to us by God’s grace and not by our own ac-

complishments. In today’s world we are encouraged

to be a self-made person who creates his own desti-

ny through intellect and hard work, but the readings

remind us that everything we do is by God’s

grace.
