Voices & Visions on Film:SJB Hosts First Annual Film Festival

On April 20th, SJB will host its first Film Festival: Voices & Visions on Film. It is open to high school and middle school film-makers across Long Island. The focus of SJB’s 2010 Film Festival is to challenge young filmmakers to identify people, events, issues or programs that inspire them. Believing that it is in both the ordinary and the extraordinary that we can be inspired, SJB’s Media Arts Director, Ms. Laura Messano, wanted the tone and topics of the St. John’s Film Festival to be not only a show of talent and ideas, but also motivating and moving to all who see and to those who create the films. This first annual Film Festival will provide a great venue to display the many gifts and ideas of student filmmakers across Long Island.

SJB Raised Prayers, Funds & Awareness To Help Classmates & Families In Haiti

The aftershocks of the earthquake in Haiti on January 12 have been felt all over the globe, but the students, faculty and staff at St. John the Baptist have turned this tragedy into an opportunity raise prayers, awareness and funds for the many family members and friends of SJB students who live in Haiti.. The day after the quake began like any other school day, with prayer. Fr. Mike Holzmann, school chaplain, spoke of the dev-astation in Haiti from the school’s TV studio. He then led the morning prayer inviting anyone who had family and friends in Haiti to come to the chapel first period. The school Guidance Counselors, Campus Ministers and Administrators were on hand to listen, plan and pray with the students. A tremendous amount of worry, upset and concern was shared and at the same time the students wanted very much to respond in some direct ways as a school community. These students also wanted to help educate their classmates about Haiti: where it was, how beautiful its culture is, and how all of us are connected as human beings to each other. Students ended by sharing some familiar Haitian music and dance with the group and as a result a little hope! Several students offered to be part of SJB morning prayer for the week, sometimes speaking in Creole, the native language of Haiti. Other students went on TV with the Haitian flag and spoke about their concerns, and their families. Working with the Campus Ministers and the Peace & Justice Club, they organized a school-wide Bake Sale which raised $900 and the most successful Dress Down day in the school’s history. The students were encouraged to wear red and blue, the colors of the Haitian flag. Students also decorated cans and passed them around for change during the lunch periods all week, collecting approx $1200. For the remainder of the week, names of all of the Haitian families and friends were scrolled on TV during morning prayer and available on large signs with a map and pictures of Haiti. These im-ages reinforced how closely we are all connected to this tragedy. Most poignant, was the return of an SJB student who had been attending school in Haiti. While warmly welcomed back to school, her presence reminds us all of the struggles of the Haitian people.

The members of MOVE (Men’s Outstanding Vocal Ensemble) recently performed during the TELECARE Telethon on January 16, and on February 6 at the Nassau Coliseum where they sang the National Anthem before the Islanders’ game.

St. John’s Tech Club & Local Seniors Make Memories Digitally!

On Wednesday November 5, the St. John the Baptist DHS Computer and Technology Club visited Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home in West Islip. The purpose of the trip, according to moderator Mr. Peter Schaefer, was, “to provide club members a means to use their computer skills for a socially responsible project.” Stu-dents sat with interested residents and collected their photographs for the purpose of creating personal memory videos. Club members planned the videos by collecting and scanning photographs, choosing music, and mapping each video using a storyboard process. The next step was to take residents’ photographs and music selections back to SJB and, using Windows Movie Maker software, create individual memory videos. They were delivered to the residents before the holidays in the hope that they would share their photo proj-ects with their families as a true gift and celebration of their life, fam-ily and history. Additionally, in early December the students arranged an evening to showcase the videos at Our Lady of Consolation.

On the left is Nicky Williams ‘13 and on the right is Zach Salvocion ‘10.

On March 26 the 40-voice Women’s Chorale performed in the Heritage International Music Festival Competition at Riverside Church in NYC. They sang three difficult selections, two of which are a cappella, for which they received a prestigious First Place Gold Award. The singers also took in a performance of “South Pacific” during the their two day stay in Manhattan.

Congratulations to the SJB Dance Company for their per-formance at the 5th Annual AAPAE Lincoln Center Invitational on March 21st! This was the fourth time that the SJB Dance Company performed with the American Alliance of Performing Arts Educators, including two prior performances at Lincoln Center and last year at Carnegie Hall. Renee Sussman, the company’s director, is extremely proud of her students and knows that they will continue to work hard and shine in all future performances. The entire SJB Dance Program will be celebrating together “on their toes” at their 7th Annual Spring Dance Concert, on Wednesday, May 12th at 7:30pm.

Pictured above are members of St. John’s award winning Mock Trial Team. The Cougars finished their 2010 season undefeated and this is the fifth straight year that they have been undefeated. Congratulations to the entire team, their coach, Frank Russell ‘74, esquire, of Lite and Russell, and their moderator, Mrs. Diana Per-golizzi Langone ‘83, of the Social Studies Department .

Pictured below are SJB’s student ambassadors for the Town of Islip’s ANTI BIAS TASK FORCE. On March 10th they were presented with certificates at Islip Town Hall after completing 4 extended training sessions that consisted of talks by guest speakers, anti bias videos, and group discussions.

On Saturday, January 30th the residents of eleven Catholic Charities group homes gathered in the Ann Frances Dunne auditorium to perform on stage for their first-ever Variety Show: Rock Around the World. With the tremendous joy that was present in the auditorium and the support of SJB faculty and student volunteers, it is no wonder that the Rock Around the World Variety Show was a success! Songs from Grease, The Beach Boys and Disney favorites were selected in addition to twirling, instrumental music, singing and plenty of dancing. It was a totally uplifting experience which ended with the entire cast singing God Bless America. For almost every resident, it was their first time on stage and many, who initially were reluctant, stepped out to sing, dance and shine ever so brightly. The SJB stu-dents took turns sharing their own talents, but none was as beautiful as the support and encouragement they provided to each of the residents as they partnered with them in dance and song and celebrated their success each step of the way. The event was coordinated by Mrs. Tricia Callahan of the SJB Campus Ministry Team and Mary Ellen Kwiencinki of Catholic Charities. The Residence Mangers worked to select music, plan skits, and gather costumes. Students and teachers visited the various resi-dences to practice and choreograph the routines. St. John’s Chaplain, Fr. Michael Holzmann and SJB senior Kyle Savage enthusiastically served as emcees for the event, welcoming all, introducing the acts and even performing themselves.

The Show Must Go On!

Mrs. Bonnie Abbondola, Chair-person of the Art department, is planning

the second ALUMNI ART EXHIBIT to be held in the SJB Student Art Gallery in

the Fall of 2010. We would like to hang the exhibit in September and display it through

November. We will schedule dates for the work to be dropped off during the summer as well as in early September. The official opening is tentatively planned for Home-

coming weekend, October 8, 9, 10. If you have any interest in participating or have any

questions, please contact Mrs. Bonnie Ab-bondola at [email protected] or call

(631-587-8000 ex138). The exhibit depends on the response from our alumni from 1970 through 2010. It will be a wonderful oppor-tunity to see where our creativity has taken

us and what our former SJB artists are doing

(l to r) Coach David Woods, Principal Walter D. Lace, and Boys’ Athletic Director, Ralph Dalton ‘82, congratulate senior Joe Micheels on being named a News Channel 12’s Scholar Athlete. (Coincidently, Joe is the second SJB athlete to receive this honor. The other is Chris Wingert‘00, profiled below.)

Joe is a four year varsity letter winner in Winter and Spring Track. Joe, who was captain of the Winter Team

and is currently captain of the Spring Team, won the Wendy’s Heisman Award for Scholar Athletes in New

York State. He is also a Nike All-American in the Hurdles. Joe has been accepted to MIT and

Cooper Union for next year.

On December 18, the SJB family was happy to welcome back Chris Wingert ‘00 who was recently inducted into the SJB Athletic Hall of Fame. Unfortunately Chris was unable to attend the ceremony in November. His father, Norm Wingert, accepted the award on his behalf. However, Chris had a very good excuse for missing the induction dinner. He was playing with his team, Real Salt Lake, in the MLS Champtionship Game which they won. While at SJB Chris spoke to members of the girls’ and boys’ soccer teams in the mini theater.

When MSG Varsity announced its “School Spirit Mania Contest”, the Cougar Crazies, a group of spirited SJB students who are pictured above, sprang into action. Under the leadership of the Athletic Department, together with athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and the entire student body they generated energy and excitement as the field of 64 schools was narrowed down to the final 2: SJB and John Jay East, Fishkill. After four weeks and more than1.7 million votes, St. John the Baptist has been named the contest winner and will receive a customized Cougar golf cart as the grand prize. Thanks to all who voted, and voted, and voted….

Validating the Vision Update Our Middle States Visiting Team Chairperson, Sr. Joanne Safian, RSHM met with Mr. Walter D. Lace and our Internal Coordina-tor, Ms. Nan Doherty on March 23rd. This pre-visit meeting clarified the schedule and details related to the team’s stay at St. John’s from April 13th thru the 16th. The four day visit to SJB will be conducted by five professional educators who have volunteered to observe, meet, discuss and review our school’s Validating the Vision Self Study report and Action Plans. During this visit they schedule meetings with students, faculty, staff, parents, members of the Advisory Board and administrators for input and feedback in order to assess the quality of our self study and planning. The SJB Planning Committee and Action Plan Teams have been meeting regularly to put the final touches on the SJB report and will seek input from faculty and administration in order to strengthen the actu-alization of our stated goals and objectives. The three objectives identi-fied as priorities were focused in the areas of Writing Skills, Technology & Research, and Faith/Spirituality Formation.
