GET YOUR CAR WASHED WHILE YOU WORSHIP

On Sunday, October 4th we will be

washing cars during all Masses in the St. John's Par-ish parking lot in front of St. John's School. Simply look for the orange cones, park your car, go to Mass, and when Mass is over we will have your car washed and ready to go! Suggested donation is $10.00, and all proceeds will go toward our continued mission in helping the poverty stricken community of our sister parish, San Pablo Apos-tol, and Santa Lucia Chapel, in the Domini-

New Day for Adoration at St. John’s chapel: Mondays

Beginning on Monday, October 5, St John’s will have one evening of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every week on Monday from 5 pm to 9 pm. By moving to Monday we will join with the Hispanic community who for many years have had adoration from 7 – 8 pm.

During the Monday evenings there will be times of prayer such as the Hispanic prayers including the rosary from 7 to 8 pm. During the other hours people are invited to bring their own prayers. People are needed to take an hour each so that someone is always there when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. We are seeking volunteers who will commit to praying for one hour, from 5 pm to 6pm, from 6 pm to 7 pm, or from 8 pm to 9 pm. There must be at least 3 people on each hour. We en-courage all Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist to con-sider volunteering to pray to deepen their devotion to the Lord in this sacrament.

Every school year St. John School receives many requests for tuition assistance. This year there is a substantial in-crease in the need for tuition financial assistance. If you or someone you know would like to be a contribu-tor to a Catholic school education for one of our deserving students, please contact the school office at (978) 531-0444. Ext. 336. Any amount donated toward tuition assis-tance is greatly appreciated. Thank You

In today’s Gospel Jesus called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the

servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, re-ceives not me but the One who sent me.”Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help hungry children feel the arms of Jesus around them.

ADULTS SEEKING CONFIRMATION OR TO BECOME CATHOLIC.

We are offering a class every weekend for adults who would like to prepare for the sacrament of confirma-tion. A number of Catholics for various reasons were not confirmed in the their teen years. There will be a series of classes to review the Catholic faith.

We also invite anyone who would like to become a Catholic. This class is the first step for someone inter-ested in entering the Catholic Church. Our first class will be Saturday, October 3, at 1:30 PM at the Parish Center at Saint John the Baptist Parish. The Parish Center is located at the end of St. John’s Avenue.

Lots of people suffer from poor me syndrome. You know the type. Someone else’s problem is never as

big as theirs; no one has suffered as much as they have. The glass is always half empty, there is never anything to look forward to, and no one really cares about them. “Ah, poor me! What am I to do? How will I ever manage?”

Jesus gives us many reasons to see our glass as full to the brim. We have faith, hope and love that will see us through anything. We have confidence in His promise to be with us always. We have our family and those who love us. There is much to be thankful for and no reason to envy others.

But that does not mean we will never feel the pain of suffer-ing. But we can choose our response. We can do something about it, or we can give in to it. Our best response is one of service, so that we stop focusing on ourselves and look to see others. We can feed the hungry, or lament hunger in the world. We can comfort the sorrowing, or focus on how much sadness the world has known. We can visit the sick and im-prisoned or we can complain about how lonely the world can be. Be part of the solution or be part of the problem. Faith gives us that choice.

NEW PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL St. John’s is now be taking nominations for the Parish Pastoral Council. At this time we are asking people who are interested in either council to submit their name or the name of another parishioner.

The Parish Pastoral Council serves a very important function. It is the key advisory group to the pastor and staff. The PPC helps us to know the needs and ideas of the parish and works with the pastor to promote the mission of our parish which is found in our mission statement on the first page of today’s bulletin. The PPC meets every two months on a weekday evening.

In the next few weeks we will provide nomination forms and pencils in all the pews. Parish Pastoral Council will have positions for a three year term. Any-one who is registered as a parishioner and a Catholic in good standing and has not already served two consecu-tive terms may apply.

If you would like to know more about the PPC, see any of our priests or deacons. It is a wonderful way to serve our parish.

SPECIAL APPEALS FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN SEPTEMBER Dear Parishioners, Our parishes are very grateful for your support. Because we are Catholics we recognize our responsibility not only for own needs but also the needs of the larger Catholic community, so we make special appeals for your generosity. September is a month when you will have several appeals for help, beyond the weekly first collection. On September 20, the 2nd collection is for the Clergy Benefit Trust. This is collection in every parish of the archdiocese is requested by Cardinal Sean for the support of our sick and elderly priests. On the weekend of September 20 I will appeal to all the members of both our parishes to support their own parish with a once-a-year collection known as the Grand Annual Appeal. This is not a second collection but a letter to all asking your help for both of our parishes to meet their expenses including capital improvements. You will receive a letter and a pledge card which you may return at any time. On the weekend of September 27, Father Steven and I will be accompanying our 108 pilgrims from our parishes to visit Pope Francis in Philadelphia. To cover our parish masses I have invited Father Peter Lyons who will speak at all Masses about Food for the Poor, an international relief organization. There will be no collection for this but you will be asked to consider making a contribution on your own. Thank you for your generosity in any way that you can offer help to all of these worthy causes. Father John

Clergy Health & Retirement Trust

This week, the diocese-wide collection will support the health and well-being of our 614 Boston priests. Our priests have been there when we needed them. Now, it is our turn to help fulfill the promises made to ensure an appropriate level of care and quality of life for them when they need us. All are welcome to make a gift online at www.clergyfunds.org or use the envelopes provided. You also can make a gift by texting the word PRIEST to 56512. Data and message rates may apply. Thank you in advance for your generous and prayerful support of our priests.

FOLLOW POPE FRANCIS AS HE COMES TO THE UNITED STATES

The week of September 20th is a very special time for us as Catholics and for the United Sates. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis will visit three major US cities. His first reason for coming is to participate in the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.

Why the World Meeting of Families? Last year Pope Francis brought together bishops from around the world to begin a lengthy discussion about families. That conversation will continue at the upcoming Synod on the Family. The pope knows how vitally important every family is. He wants us a Church to help families grow strong and face the challenges of our day. Many families are struggling to stay together. We want to bring our faith and our Catholic tradition to shed light on family problems and possibilities. Our pope will have many messages while he is here. Our two parishes will be in Philadelphia to see him and hear him. But you will have an excellent view of him on your TV or computer screen. So please make time to tune in to his talks in various places: in different churches but also in the capital building and at the White House. Use the media and internet to learn more about him.

Pray for us, the 110 pilgrims from our parishes who leave on Friday to see the Holy Father and to grow in our faith through encountering not only him but tens of thousands of other Catholics and Americans. We will pray for you as well and Father Steven and I will offer our pilgrimage masses for all the people of Saint John’s and Saint Thomas.’

THANKS TO ALL WHO KEEP OUR PARISHES ALIVE.

As I announced to you last week, I am making an appeal this weekend for the support of our parishes through our Grand Annual Collection. This is not a special collection but a call for everyone who can make a substantial contribution. Many people offer a pledge which can be paid over some months. But I also want you to know that both parishes also rely on other kinds of fundraising. Our parish thrift stores have been a source of tremen-dous income. We owe a lot of thanks to the volunteers who sort and sell the many items which others bring in. We could not make ends meet without them! Then there are our others like our catechists whom we bless at Masses this weekend. They bring the faith to our children. Many others on parish committees raise money for thins we need…like a new refrigerator for the kitchen in the St. Thomas school gym. Talented people provide technology skills and make countless repairs and improvements without any cost to us. Time, talent and treas-ure is what makes our parishes work!

GOOD STEWARDSHIP INVOLVES ACCOUNTABILITY

Both of our parish staffs and parish finance councils are completing and will be distributing our annual finan-cial report so you can see our income and expenses. This is our way of being good stewards and of keeping you aware of the fiscal side of our parishes. Our finance councils review financial reports regularly to stay on top of things and to advise me about major expenditures. Please join me in thanking these people who are so dependable at this work. HOW CAN WE BRING OTHERS TO A STRONGER AND MORE ACTIVE FAITH?

I am very hopeful that the Pope Francis visit, our pilgrimage, our Grand Annual and the great job our volun-teers do will all enable us to spread the joy of the gospel and bring others..especially those on the margins of church life. Every year at this time I invite people to come forward to complete their sacraments or to enter the Catholic Church. If you are an adult and have not been confirmed, or if you or someone you know wants to become a Catholic, this is a perfect time. Deacon Brian is starting a class in a few weeks for all adults. Check on the special notice in the bulletin about details. Pray for and encourage conversions which often begin with a person to person encounter in which one person shares their faith with another. May God bless all the good that we do for the sake of Jesus and the gospel! Fr. John

By Dr. Scott Hahn Servant of All

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B)

In today's First Reading, it's like we have our ears pressed to the wall and can hear the murderous grum-blings of the elders, chief priests and scribes - who last week Jesus predicted would torture and kill Him (see Mark 8:31; 10:33-34).

The liturgy invites us to see this passage from the Book of Wisdom as a prophecy of the Lord's Passion. We hear His enemies complain that "the Just One" has chal-lenged their authority, reproached them for breaking the law of Moses, for betraying their training as leaders and teachers.

And we hear chilling words that foreshadow how they will mock Him as He hangs on the cross: "For if the Just One be the Son of God, He will...deliver Him..." (compare Matthew 27:41-43).

Today's Gospel and Psalm give us the flip side of the First Reading. In both, we hear of Jesus' sufferings from His point of view. Though His enemies surround Him, He offers himself freely in sacrifice, trusting that God will sustain Him.

But the apostles today don't understand this second an-nouncement of Christ's passion. They begin arguing over issues of succession -- over who among them is greatest, who will be chosen to lead after Christ is killed.

Again they are thinking not as God, but as human beings (see Mark 8:33). And again Jesus teaches the Twelve -- the chosen leaders of His Church -- that they must lead by imitating His example of love and self-sacrifice. They must be "servants of all," especially the weak and the helpless - symbolized by the child He embraces and places in their midst.

This is a lesson for us, too. We must have the mind of Christ, who humbled himself to come among us (see Philippians 2: 5-11). We must freely offer ourselves, making everything we do a sacrifice in praise of His name.

As James says in today's Epistle, we must seek wisdom from above, desiring humility not glory, and in all things be gentle and full of mercy.
