Dear Parish Family,

We come to the end of the Liturgical

Year and naturally the Church wants us

to focus our attention on the ‘end-

times’. We have gone through the delu-sional predictions of the end times in the media for many years in a

row. Human imagination seems to be preoccupied with the exact

time and the catastrophic forebodings of the end rather than the

inner meaning and the transformation.

The vision of Daniel of the final warfare with the triumph of the

forces of the good is a major breakthrough in understanding of

afterlife in the Hebrew Scriptures. There will be a new world order

with retribution of the beleaguered just for their life time suffering at the hands of the malevolent mighty. Jesus himself spoke of the

end times through parables, similes and teachings with eschatolog-

ical undertones. His predictions included the destruction of Jerusa-

lem, His passion and death, unpreparedness of the individual per-

sons for their passing from this world to the next and also the tri-

umphal return of the ‘Son of Man’ (Christ) at the end of time.

Mark's gospel was written shortly before the destruction of the

temple. So the writings of Paul and the aspirations of the early

Church expected a quick ‘return of Christ’ (Parusia). After Jerusa-lem was destroyed and the church expanded its horizons, the ex-

pectation of an early parusia receded.

As we reflect of the reading of today, it is apt for us to reflect on

the basic convictions of Christians as regards the last things: death,

the end of the world. Our first conviction is the certainty that Jesus

is Risen and is with the Father and thus is with us forever. We are

consequently safe, free of fear. Fear of spirits and divinities was

widespread in the ancient world. It is no less today and powers of

evil have taken on new guises. Christ lives, he has overcome death

and has overcome all these powers. The second is the certainty that

Christ is with me. And just as the future world in Christ has al-

ready begun, this also provides the certainty of hope. Our third

conviction is that the Judge who returns is also our Savior. He has

left us the duty to live in this world in accordance with his way of

living. He has entrusted the responsibility for the world, for our

brothers and sisters and at the same time also the certainty of his

mercy. Both these things are important. Since God is merciful we

do not live as if good and evil is the same thing. This would be a

deception. Our ‘politically correct notion’ should be reined in and

our blinders removed to see the difference between good and evil,

virtue and sin. We are also certain that this Judge is good; we

know his Face, the Face of the Risen Christ, of Christ crucified for

us. So live not in fear, but with eagerness and hope.

Our Sacramental Life

We celebrate Baptism: Please call the Rectory well in advance of the ex-pected day of Baptism to arrange an appointment for an interview. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. We require all Baptismal families to be registered at St. John’s. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm. We celebrate Reconciliation: Confessions are heard from 4:30-5:00 pm on Satur-day. You may also make an appointment with one of the priests. Spanish confessions is available 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month and from 12:30 –1:00 PM on Sundays. We celebrate Marriage: Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance. Participation in Pre-Cana is essential. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment with one of the priests. We celebrate Anointing of the Sick: Planning to enter the hospital for elective surgery or other serious treatment, and for those who have need of spiritual healing. In an emergency, call the Rec-tory at any time. We celebrate Holy Orders: Any gentleman interested in exploring the question of vocation to the priesthood or the permanent diaconate should contact Fr. Tom Kunnel. We would also be happy to direct anyone interested in living their lives as Religious Sisters or Brothers. We celebrate the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: We welcome you to full membership in the life of the Church. The instruction for Baptism, Confirma-tion and Eucharist for adults. If interested please contact Dcn Robert Pang.

Parish Registration: All adults (over age 21) should register in the parish themselves and should use envelopes or parishpay.com. Tithing is 5% of income. This registration is our only means of certifying anyone as a member of the parish, especially for Baptism and Confirmation sponsorship letters and for scheduling Baptisms and Weddings.

This is architect, Arthur Rigolo’s conception of the new St. John’s Church after the fire. The new church would be constructed on Piermont Avenue overlooking the Hud-son River. The new church would seat 400 people. It would include a a basement meeting hall with kitchen fa-cilities. The roof construction will be of heavy laminated wood arches and a wood-plank deck. On the river side of the building will have many windows. Also on the river side will be a large parking lot near the structures east entrance into a hall planned for social functions. Father Thomas F. Connelly signed the contract in March of 1963 and a building permit was issued on July 31, 1963.
