December 1, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Advent comes from the Latin word meaning “coming.” Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.  Advent is not as strict as Lent, and there are no rules for fasting, but it is meant to be a period of self-preparation. The purple color associated with Advent is also the color of penance. The faithful should receive the sacrament of Reconciliation and do some acts of mortification to empty themselves of excess in order to

be ready for when the Lord arrives. Please take advantage of this sacred season of Advent.  It is the time when the Church focuses on the real meaning of Christmas; the remembrance of His humble birth two-thousand years ago and more so His return in majesty when all is complete.  Allow us to help you get-ready spiritually for that time with Reconciliation, Daily Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Works of Charity through our parish programs.  There is no time like the present, to make straight the Coming of the Lord.

Daily Liturgical Schedule during Advent:

Monday to Friday 6:30 & 8:00 a.m.  MassesMondays of Advent  3:00 to 7 p.m.  Adoration of the BlessedSaturday 8:00 a.m.  Mass and Reconciliation (Confessions)  4:00 to 4:45 p.m.

Mrs. Smith’s fifth grade students built Viking ships in social studies class. They worked in groups to build their ship from carboard, popsicle sticks, felt, molding clay, and whatever else they brought in. Each student contributed with supplies, creativity, ideas, and they learned to work together. The STEAM project was a great success!

Marriage Moments: Think of one trait or talent that your mother-in-law or father-in-law passed on to your spouse for which you are grateful.

The Bishop celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation each year for those adults who have not yet completed their initiation. The date for this celebration this year in Spanish is Sunday, December 15, 2019, 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Church. This celebration is for those over the age of 18 who have already been baptized and received their first Communion.

Stay awake! With so many things competing for our attention and so many details to attend to, it is very easy to fall into a slumber. We can find ourselves simply going through the motions of life and losing a sense of purpose and direction. Busy with many things, we lose touch with the things of God, especially the gentle stirrings of His presence. Advent calls us to the challenge of living a wakeful life. Awake from the sleep that life’s demands can put on us, and allow God’s word to transform our hearts. Being ready for the coming of the Lord is life’s priority for the Christian. Let us walk in the light of the Lord! ©LPi

The annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection will be held Dec. 7-8 in the Diocese of Wilmington. Proceeds help hundreds of U.S. religious communities to care for aging members. Some 30,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests benefit.  Last year, the Diocese of Wilmington donated $112,748.61 to the collection. The Capuchin Poor Clare Nuns, Little Sisters of Jesus and Mary, Oblate Sisters, Priests & Brothers of St. Francis de Sales

within our Diocese received, last year, a combined total of $252,992.06 in financial support. The featured religious, in this year’s poster, includes a Wilmingtonian.  The religious on the left is Bernardine Sister de Lourdes, Okoniewski, OSF.  A native of St. Hedwig Parish and a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School, Sister de Lourdes ministered most of her religious life in education.  She was principal of St. Mary Magdalen School, Sharpley, in the 1980s.  Presently at St. Joseph Villa in Reading PA, Sister de Lourdes is caregiver of her older blood and religious sister, Sister Mary Laetitia, who celebrated her 100th birthday in August.  Donations to the Retirement Fund enable religious men and women to retire with dignity.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: What’s the story behind the Advent wreath? Answer: Each season in the liturgical calendar comes with its own local and regional rituals. During the Advent season, wreathes adorn church sanctuaries and family dining room tables. You may have said Advent wreath prayers in childhood or taken a turn

lighting the candles. The Advent wreath is full of symbolism about Christ and his coming at Christmas. The wreath is made of evergreen boughs, reminding us that the life of grace doesn’t falter with the changing seasons. It remains always remains fresh and new. Similarly, a circular wreath reminds us of the eternal, never-ending nature of God’s love. Candles remind us that Christ is the light of the world, the One who “shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” We use four candles to represent each week of Advent. Traditionally they come in the liturgical colors of the season. Purple has historically represented penance and sacrifice. We see the same color for the season of Lent. On the third Sunday of Advent, however, we light a rose color. The priest will wear rose vestments at Mass. This is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. On the third Sunday of Advent, we’re roughly halfway through the season. The Church chooses the midpoint to remind us to celebrate in the midst of our anticipation! Whatever the color and whatever the day, the Advent wreath is a beautiful practice to focus our attention on Christ’s coming at Christmas. ©LPi
