Notes From The Pastor’s Desk

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTERWWW.SJBDE.ORGMAY 7, 2017

This weekend, our parish children are beginning to receive their First Holy Communion. Observing them, as they were preparing for the sacrament, I could see the personality of each child coming out, already, at around age 8. Some are talkative, others shy, some are polite and others are bold. Although each disclosed a unique personal characteristic, they were similar in their desire to follow Jesus.

Today’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus is the gate, the way, of the sheepfold. The Lord tells His disciples that He is the true leader, the one that we should listen to because He truly cares for us and we can feel safe in following Him because we know His voice. Our children display this by being attuned to Jesus, feeling safe because He is good and loves them. So they are confident and unafraid in encountering Him in the Eucharist, meeting Jesus in their First Holy Communion.

There are many dangerous voices out there, predators, trying to lure any of us into dangerous pastures. We know their voices: “Think only of yourself,” “Be popular at any cost,” “try it…it will make you feel good.” We also know the voice of Jesus, and we know where He wants to take us. Recall today the trustful voice that called you to the altar for the very first time to receive Communion with Him. We pray that we, together young and old, have the wisdom to follow our shepherd.

The 2017 Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal allows us to meet the Resurrected Lord in the ministries that the Diocese offers to more than 100,000 people…young and old, seeking emotional, spiritual and physical assistance. The goal of the Diocesan Annual Appeal has been set this year for $4,523,000. Our parish goal is $179,000. Enter more fully into the mystery of being a follower of Christ. If you have not already made a pledge to the Appeal, please consider making one. Appeal pledge cards are available at the entrances of the church. Your generosity is appreciated.

May 13, 2017 marks the centennial of the Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 6 times to 3 shepherd children between May 13 and October 13, 1917 in Fatima Portugal. Her heavenly message was for everyone to heed her request to pray the rosary, wear the Brown Scapular and perform acts of sacrifice. Our Lady of Fatima promised that the whole world would be in peace, and that many souls would go to Heaven if her requests were listened to and obeyed. You can honor

Our Mother’s request by celebrating Mass on Saturday, May 13th at 8 a.m. in our church.

SCHEDULE

2017 Annual Catholic Appeal – “Their Eyes Were Opened and They Recognized Him”

In today’s Gospel Jesus tell us, “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

Everyone is welcome to the flock by Jesus. As followers of Christ, we too must act faithfully to reach out to others. As Christ committed His life to being the “one shepherd”, we too must commit ourselves to providing service to all.

Thank you to everyone who made a pledge to the diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal. If you have not yet participated, please consider doing so today. Your gift makes a real difference in the lives of thousands of individuals and families who reside within our 12-county diocese. Pledge envelopes are available in the pews [OR the appropriate designated location] and can be placed in the offertory basket. Thank you for your generosity and support.

To learn more about the Annual Catholic Appeal, visit www.cdow.org; click “Giving” then “Annual Catholic Appeal”.

A big thank you to Saint John the Beloved school students and their families who delivered Easter flowers to our home bound parishioners this holiday! Together, they were able to visit 47 parishioners and spend some time with each one. Rich Ross of Richardson’s Floral Center donated the flowers. A big thank you to him as well!

NOTICE Our paper recycling program will end, and the paper bins at our Milltown entrance will be permanently removed, on May 1, 2017. The parish thanks everyone for your past participation in this program and encourages everyone to continue to preserve and protect our environment by utilizing the curbside recycling program provided at their home address by their local waste removal company.

Diocesan Priests’ Retirement Fund 2017

The weekend of May 20/21, all Catholic churches in Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore will conduct a special collection to benefit the Diocesan Priests’ Retirement Fund. As more and more of our priests retire from active parish ministry, there is a growing need to supplement this fund. Your generosity and prayer for our aging priests are greatly appreciated.

St. John the Beloved Lazarus Ministry is Expanding

Do you feel a particular calling to help those who just lost a loved one in our parish? If so, the Lazarus Ministry, a Bereavement Ministry at St. JTB, is growing and looking for you! This is an excellent opportunity to reach out to those whose hearts are grieving. Perhaps you have lost someone dear in the past and received help through family, friends or even the Lazarus Ministry and wish to continue the cycle of giving. This is not a support group; but rather a ministry of caring for people who wish to communicate with the grieving via cards and phone calls. It requires a minimal investment in time limited to making phone calls and sending out cards. Instruction and training is given.

If you feel this is something you might be interested in, please call Wanda Gray to learn more: 502-2766
