Dear Folks,

Beginning today the parish is returning to the use of the Sign of Peace at Mass. It was restricted during the height of the flu season. Now is a healthier time to offer the weekly sign of confraternity in Christ that was present in the early Church. God bless one and all.

Today, following the 12:30 Mass we will have the dedication of our new statue of St. John the Evangelist. It is located outside the front door of the Church. Come one come all. Some of the wonderful ladies have planned for refreshments in the front plaza of the Church following the dedication. Many thanks to Roy and Norma Francis along with Carol Caggiano for all their hard work in promoting this project. It was not an easy task as the first statue had to be sent back to China due to defects in the quality of the work. The second looks just fine.

Today, following the 5:30pm Mass we will host the cookout for the high school CCD students. They have been hard at it all year and deserve a special treat/feast. Special tribute will be given to Mrs. Donna May and Mrs. Christa Moyle for assisting in the classes. The gathering will take place in the rectory backyard. Please come hungry.

Just as in the past, on Memorial Day, Monday May 30th at High Noon, I will be honored to take any of the parish veterans Fly Fishing. Please mark your calendars and pray for good weather. More to come.

On Sunday May 22nd, one week before the great Memorial Day Weekend, the parish will host the annual “Blessing of Motorcycles.” Come one come all, Catholics and Non. All are welcome. The blessing will take place in the drive, in front of the Church. And please, never forget, “Stay on the high side.” See you there.

Thirdly, this is a reminder for the newly formed Grieving Committee. During the last year, most especially in the last number of months, the parish has witnessed a high number of funerals and personal tragedies of various sorts. In response to the suffering of many of our parishioners we are initiating a committee to assist them in their suffering, loss and grief. Dr. George Swanberg will lead the gatherings of those wishing to attend. This good apostolate hopes to reach out to those suffering prolonged illness, and/or those who take care of them. It will also reach for those who have lost spouses or children to death as well as the caretakers to the loved ones who have lost them to Alzheimer's. We hope to start at the end of May. Please contact me directly if you are interested. Fr. Gould 703-626-8113; [email protected].

I want everyone to pray for a healthy Summer break. I do worry for those worry for those may be struck with Lyme Disease, common to this area. And I worry for the coming of the Zika Virus and it’s devastating effect on all of us. The first plague by tics and the later by mosquitoes. Virginia is among the thirty states where the virus has been discovered. Please, let’s be careful out there. For more information on these health concerns please review the following websites.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zika_virus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillain%E2%80%93Barr%C3%A9_syndrome

And finally, Congratulations goes out to Fr. John Melmer, former pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish who is soon to celebrate his twenty-fifth anniversary in priesthood. He is what used to be called a “lifer at the seminary.” Four years high seminary in West Virginia. Four years of college seminary in Ohio and Emmitsburg. And four years in theology. God bless the good priest for his many years of service to God and man in his priestly assignments. Ad Multos Annos. To Many Years.

Collegiate Answer: In the colonial days of America the first Archbishop of Baltimore, the Primatial See for this country, was elected by the clergy rather than designated by Rome. It is the only time such a process has been done in this country. The Archbishop was Archbishop John Carroll. He was cousin to Charles Carroll of Carrollton, only Catholic, and last surviving, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Alright, here is an incredibly hard question. Probably one of my hardest questions ever. Who was the 19th century Irish priest assigned to St. John the Evangelist Parish, Warrenton, who died of sunstroke on the way to the assignment? He had taken a boat from Washington to Aquia Creek with intention to travel overland to Warrenton but was overwhelmed with the sun and heat and succumbed to sunstroke.

Fr. Gould

Greetings! Flyers are up around the church property informing parishioners of the elementary PTO's Redskins tickets raffle.

Please support this initiative. The drawing will be July 31. We are still taking applications and resumes for a Part-Time (20 hrs/week-10am-2pm) School Nurse for the 2016-17 school year. We prefer an RN or an LPN. In addition, a part-time Cafeteria Supervisor between the hours of 10:30am-1:30pm on a daily basis, we are also seeking a full time Instructional Aide for the 2nd Grade next year. This is a benefited position, and we are looking for someone who has worked with children in elementary school, pre-school or day care. Parents with large families certainly qualify! Please contact me at [email protected] to get more information or to set-up an interview. All applicants for either position must complete a Diocesan application and submit to a background check and be scheduled for Virtus and first aid training. I am grateful to elementary parents, Melissa Allen and Heather Shaffer, for spearheading the PTO chili Cook-Off last weekend. May crowning at the elementary school will be after the 8:30 Mass on Friday, May 6, at the Mary shrine in front of the school. All are welcome. Don't forget the National Junior Honor Society's Pancake Breakfast, hosted by middle school students, on Sunday, May 8. We celebrate our teachers, starting tomorrow, during Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week (May 2-6). In addition, we welcome back our middle school science and Math teacher, LuAnn Fine, from an extended sick leave tomorrow. We missed you, Mrs. Fine! Have a great week and God bless you

These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209.

The first Study, started in October, was “The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation.” The 24 lessons in

“The Bible Timeline” guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative.

In 2013, “Matthew: The King and his Kingdom,” another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in “The Bible Timeline.” The gospel of Matthew

explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was “Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom” **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the

Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon

In the early summer of 2015 we offered “Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals

Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives.

In the fall of 2015 “Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come” an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately

connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into

every time we celebrate the Mass.

In 2016 the Bible Study group covered “James: Pearls for Wise Living” described as a “book of wisdom.”

James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution.

“I choose the poverty of our poor people. But I am grateful to receive it (the Nobel) in the name of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, of the

crippled, of the blind, of the lepers, of all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.”

Or maybe it’s been a while since we’ve seen you? Now’s the time – make a great summer EPIC, by journeying closer to Christ with your friends at Life Teen! The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
