I will never forget her wake when, in a kind of procession, each of her adult grandchildren walked up to her casket and slipped a small symbol beneath the folds of the lining of the coffin. CHRIST'S ENDURING PRESENCE FOR ALL TIMES I have always imagined that the Lord's followers were very deflated, to the point of depression, when he ascended into the heavens before their eyes. This was the man who had completely changed their lives. This was the man whom they had abandoned, yet who brought them the Easter peace of reconciliation and forgiveness. It could have all ended in that place where Jesus ascended. We all know it did not. The Lord Jesus left his followers gifts that would always and forever make his presence known to them. And these gifts are at our disposal to this day. Every time we gather to cele- brate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, we know the presence of the Lord. Symbols, like my grandmother's one playing card, have tremendous power to evoke presence. Christ's presence inspires us to take his final words to his fol- lowers very seriously. It is in Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit that we continue to make the gospel mes- sage known to those we meet. Today is not a day to celebrate the departure of Christ from this world. It is a day to cele- brate the enduring presence of the Lord. Copyright (c) 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

GRANDMOTHER'S DECK OF CARDS

My grandmother had a deep and lasting impact on the lives of her grandchildren. She was our first close relative to die. I will never forget her wake when, in a kind of procession, each of her adult grandchildren walked up to her casket and slipped a small symbol beneath the folds of the lining of the coffin. For me, it was a playing card from the deck she always used to create a kind of magical fan, formed by bending the deck of cards back and forth. Each time I perform this same "trick" to the delight of my own nieces and nephews, the presence of my grandmother is unmistakable.

Every time we gather to cele-brate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, we know the presence of the Lord. Symbols, like my grandmother's one playing card, have tremendous power to evoke presence. Christ's presence inspires us to take his final words to his fol-lowers very seriously. It is in Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit that we continue to make the gospel mes-sage known to those we meet. Today is not a day to celebrate the departure of Christ from this world. The Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.

— Mark 16:16

PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear the final words

Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating oth-ers with dignity and respect, providing for those less for-tunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives. GOD’S WORD TODAY Very often we hear these words other days, too when listening to the Gospel reading: “Jesus said to his dis-ciples.” And too often we listen to the proclamation as if it were a lovely bit of historical writing. We might be tempted to think that these words live in some kind of vacuum. Instead, why not perk up our ears when we hear this phrase? Instead of hearing “Jesus said to his disciples,” why not hear “Jesus says to me, right here and right now”? This is a fitting exercise on this day when we remember Christ’s ascension into heaven. For his words to his disciples—to us—today call for a continued dedication to sharing the good news of Christ’s saving death and resurrection with a world hungry for hope and new life. CAMP STANISLAUS NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS! Camp Stanislaus, an overnight and day camp for boys and girls ages eight through fifteen, is currently taking appli-cations for campers for the 2015 camp session. Camp Stanislaus will run from June 14 through July 11. Camp-ers can sign up for one, two, three, or four week sessions. Also for the first time we will offer a father and son camp from July 17-19. Given the many years of operation, many fathers continue to send their sons to enjoy the wonderful camp experience that they had as a young boy at Camp Stanislaus. At Camp Stanislaus, campers will enjoy sailing, water skiing, archery, swimming, field sports, crafts, hobbies, day trips, and much more.
