May 17, 2015 Seventh Sunday of Easter
Out of all the evangelists, John is the only one who places actual prayers addressed to the Father on the lips of Jesus prior to his passion. Luke, in particular, likes to tell us that Jesus goes off to pray by himself. But even the most famous prayer in the New Testament—the Lord’s Prayer—is given by Jesus as an example of how to pray, not as an actual prayer he is offering. This year, on the Sundays of Easter, we have heard a number of discourses and prayers that Jesus offered between the time he shared his last meal with his disciples and washed their feet, and the time he was handed over in betrayal. We hear these accounts during these Sundays because Jesus was summarizing all that his followers would need to know as they would be sent out to continue his mission of preaching the Good News. This is the mission that we will celebrate next Sunday on the feast of Pentecost.
THE MISSION CONTINUESThree things are important to Peter in today’s first reading,
all of which are connected to the Gospel. There is a need for the unity of the twelve to be preserved, and the prayer that Jesus offers today is frequently called the “great prayer of unity.” It is important for whomever is elected to fill the place left vacant by Judas’ betrayal to be a “witness” (our word “martyr” comes from the Greek word for “witness”) to the entire life of Jesus, in his company from the start of his mission through the appearance of the risen Christ; there must be an integrity, a unity, a “consecration in truth” that will be essen-tial as they are sent from Jerusalem into the world. Finally, following the example of their master, Peter does not enter into this crucial moment in the spreading of the good news without turning his own voice and the voice of the community to God in prayer. The strong resonance between these two scripture passages should serve as an effective guide for us as we continue to pray and discern our own role in the ongoing spread of the good news of salvation.Today’s Readings: Acts 1:15–17, 20a, 20c–26; Ps 103:1–2, 11–12, 19–20; 1 Jn 4:11–16; Jn 17:11b–19

REFLECTIONS
PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
Today we celebrate one of the tenets of
our creed: that the Lord ascended into
heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear
the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before
he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commis-
sioning, no less real for us today than they were to the
disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel to
every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means
that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our every-
day lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, pro-
viding for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good
stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming to-
gether as God’s family in worship and praise—these are
all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives.

REFLEJOS
