The Epiphany makes known the promise that this child, our Savior, is for the whole world, a promise that restores light to a world darkened by evil. LIFE IN THE DARK In Isaiah, we rejoice because a light has come to challenge the darkness that covers the earth. This light draws all to itself, kings and shepherds, daughters and sons. The psalm describes the wonder of life lived within the light: justice and peace flower, the poor are rescued, the afflicted are helped, and the lives of the lowly are saved. In Ephesians we are reminded that we are co-heirs of the promise, of the light, that is Jesus our Savior. But Matthew tells the rest of the story. There is opposition to the light and it is deadly. The magi are led by the light from a star, but when they encounter Herod, the light is lost to them. Herod lies to them about his intentions regarding this new king. The light returns only when the magi leave Herod. They reach the new king, a baby, and are warned to return along a way that avoids Herod, his lies and his evil intentions. They and the child are saved, but many will suffer because of the evil that lies within Herod. LIFE IN THE LIGHT Today we are reminded that there is darkness in the world. There is evil. Herod is concerned with protecting his position and his power. Jesus is concerned about protecting the poor and the powerless. Evil disguises itself as good. Jesus offers himself with no disguise or pretense. Evil always puts its self- interest first. Jesus always puts the poor, the afflicted, and the lowly first. The holidays are over and we return to Ordinary Time. We return to our ordinary lives. This is the most important time because it is during these ordinary days that we strengthen our understanding of the good, of Jesus, and our resolve to do good in a world where evil often seems too powerful. January 8, 2017 — The Epiphany of the Lord

In today's readings we hear again about the light from the star that first led shepherds and now kings to the baby Jesus. Isaiah and the psalm describe a life lived in the light of promise and peace. Matthew tells not only of the light but also of evil. Herod, who meets the magi on their way to see Jesus, lies. He pretends to be someone he is not. He pretends to believe in the power of this child. The struggle between truth and falsehood, between light and dark begins again. The magi are not deceived and the family is saved, but the threat that this child represents to the established order is clear.

Evil always puts its self-interest first. The joy and the promise of Christmas are made real in these ordinary days. This is the Epiphany.

Today's Readings: Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12

January 8, 2017 Dear Family: At the end of Advent and Christmastime, the Scriptures take us from the humble, local event of the Messiah's birth to a celebration of the universal effects of God's breaking through into human history. Pilgrimages, processions, journeys, and exotic visitors all come together in the glorious light of the Lord, who has come to dwell in time for all peoples. Isaiah summons the city of Jerusalem to rejoice in the glory of the Lord. While other people dwell in darkness, the people of God walk in the radiance of the Lord. Furthermore, Jerusalem will be the bearer and sign of God's glory to those nations; caravans will stream toward the light, bearing riches and proclaiming the praises of the Lord - a glorious vision! Paul's teaching also stresses that God's reign is widespread, even universal. The Gentiles are "coheirs" of the same revelation given to Paul and the Apostles. Indeed, they become "copartners" in the Gospel. The Spirit has made them members of the same body and commissioned them for the same ministry. The details of the Magi's visit intrigue us. The visitors' names and occupations, the symbolism of the gifts, and the evil intentions of Herod lend drama and mystery to the story. But we need to focus on the Gospel as an epiphany, a manifestation of God's intervention in the world. These foreigners are a sign of the far-reaching effect of the birth of the Son of God. All peoples of good will find their way to the Lord. Some questions for reflection: What role does the idea of "gift" play in the readings today? How do you understand the spiritual nature of the journey in the readings? What gift do you offer to the Lord as their new year begins? I pray you have all had a Blessed Christmas Season and have enjoyed spiritual enlightenment and revelation of "God with us" in our celebration of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It has been a joy to make our Advent journey together and celebrate the joy of Christmas. At 4:00 p.m. on Sunday - The Feast of the Epiphany - please join us for a concert honoring our Savior's birth. A 23 piece orchestra under the direction of Bill Grimes will be here to celebrate the culmination of this great season. Songs of Christmas, Sacred Songs and other favorites will be on the program. Also, there will be a special appearance by a children's choir from St. John School. All proceeds go to St. John School. We need your support. Come and enjoy! Monday, I leave for New Orleans with all of our diocesan priests as we gather for continuing education. This year's topic is prayer. Prayer is at the core of our ministry and I'm looking forward to prayer renewal through our gathering and studying. I leave Thursday, January 12th for vacation in Australia and will be attending the Australian Open Tennis Championship in Melbourne, Australia. I will also visit New Zealand for the first time. During my absence, Fr. Pat Mascarella and Fr. Jon Koehler will be celebrating weekend Eucharist with you. Please extend to them a warm welcome. Know that I will keep you in my prayer and will look forward to returning rested, renewed and ready to begin ministry in a new year. Thanks for your generous gifts and many kindnesses especially during this beautiful season of giving in remembrance of Christ. You are loved and appreciated. Peace, Fr. Greg

GROWING IN FAITH

ADVENT GIVING TREE Thanks to the generosity of our

parishioners, we were able to distribute 450 gifts to the less fortunate children of our community. A grateful acknowledgement is made to Ivan Cabrera for donating 18 bikes!

We appreciate the many volunteers who helped sort and deliver the gifts. Thank you all for making Christmas special for the children of the Plaquemine community.

HOLIDAY VISITS TO THE HOMEBOUND We visited 70 homebound on December 15th. Those we visited were extremely happy to see us as we greeted them with poinsettias and baked goodies.

Thank you to our volunteers who visited and the students who baked items to bring to those who cannot leave their homes or the nursing home.

GEMS CHRISTMAS SOCIAL Thanks to our GEMS partners for giving their time for the Annual GEMS Christmas Social. Our volunteers who bring dishes, set up, and serve are truly appreciated.

A special thanks to the St. John students, under the direction of Mr. David Aguillard, who graced the attendees with the joy of Christmas music.

Thank you to all who attended and brought canned goods for Our Brothers Keeper Food Bank. We enjoy fellowship in a special way during the holiday season.
