THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 6TH, 2021

Help Wanted!

As we are getting back to a more normal experience of liturgy we realize that we would like to invite more parishioners to serve in liturgical ministries - musicians,

cantors, hospitality ministers, ushers, readers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers (both children and adults), sacristans. It’s a great way to share your gifts and feel more connected to our solemn worship at Mass! Just fill out one our stewardship forms or “sign up to serve” forms in church. We are in special need of a team of adults

(at least four) to train and schedule our youth altar servers

(and adults too…!). The altar server program is a wonderful way to help our kids understand the mass and learn how to lead worship by their example. It’s even great for helping kids get over their fear of being in front of people (a fear that sadly kept me from serving until I went to the seminary at the age of 22). Please talk to me after mass if you would like to be a part of our altar server ministry team (even if you’ve never served yourself) or call the office this week (740) 676-0051. You can also nominate someone you think would do a good job in this ministry!

Liturgy Committee

We had an initial meeting of our newly formed Liturgy Committee. This is a great ministry to be a part of that helps us continually develop the excellence of our solemn celebration of the mass, the sacraments and the Liturgy of the Hours! Get Involved, Feel Connected!

St. John’s Labor Day Car Show

St. John’s Church will be hosting a car show on Labor Day, Monday, September 6, in front of the church on Guernsey St, 37th St, and Tallman Ave. We would like this to be a community event that will raise money

for local charities that serve those in need - our own St. Vincent de Paul Conference, the Living Bread Soup kitchen and the Salvation Army emergency shelter. This event will also be a way for the community to get to know our church family! We need a group of volunteers - 2 people to gather sponsorships from local businesses over the next three months, 8 people to work registration and park cars, 9am-12pm, 2 people for a hospitality booth with information about our church from 10am-1pm, and 1pm-4pm, and 3-4 people from 2pm-5pm to help clean up and hand out awards! If you are willing to help please sign up at the church entrances or call the office (740) 676-0051.

Caring Crafters Our first meeting included 18 ladies and was full of ideas and enthusiasm. We started with a small project, making book markers. They have been placed at the

entrances of church for anyone to take. Some projects we will be working on include: sending cards to the homebound, prayer shawls, rosaries, and lap blankets. However, we are in need of supplies and would appreciate any donations. Due to infection control, items must be new or unused, and free of fragrances, odors, cigarette smoke, and pet hairs. Examples include, but are not limited to: yarn, material, needles, buttons, ribbons, lace, beads, card stock, embroidery thread, embellishments. A box will be placed in the front entrance of each church. Monetary donations can be placed in the collection marked Caring Crafters (if you make out a check make it to either St. John’s or St. Mary’s with “Caring Crafters” in memo line). Our next meeting will be June 16th at 6pm in St. Johns church hall. Join us in sharing God’s love through hand made items!

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

We Can Prepare the Upper Room We all know that person, don’t we? Hey, maybe we’ve even been that person. “I have a great relationship with God, but I don’t go to church regularly. God and I are on good terms. I can talk to Him just fine on my own.” There isn’t anything false in these statements. It’s important to have an intimate, even conversational prayer relationship with God. But the problem with this attitude is that it implies that churches don’t matter. Community worship doesn’t matter. Today, we are reminded exactly why that is so untrue. Why we need our parishes, our priests, and each other. The Body and Blood of Christ — that’s what it’s all about. If it’s not about that, it’s not about anything. If we don’t have the Eucharist, we’re just like the ancient priests, making sacrifices that don’t have the power to redeem anybody. Where do we receive the Body and Blood of Christ? For most of us, it’s in our parishes. The altar of sacrifice is also the table we gather in front of, as a family, to become one with Christ in the truest and realest way possible, recreating the scene in the Upper Room over and over again every time Mass is celebrated. The disciples were commissioned by Christ to prepare the Upper Room for the Last Supper. How can we take up that work ourselves? How can we strengthen the bonds in our spiritual family? How can we serve our parish, always remembering that the table is not meant to be set only for two? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS POSTPONED

Parish Council elections have been postponed until the Fall. We need more time to gather nominations and put together a ballot. Since we are already in June and July when many parishioners may be away or travelling we will wait until the later part of August to hold “election weekend.” If you get a call from a current member of council asking you to consider serving on council please say “yes”!
