Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As Fr. Tony announced at the Masses last weekend, our parish will be offering a Communal Anointing of the Sick Mass on Saturday, December 12th at 2pm in the church. This will be an opportunity for those with chronic, addictive, or life-threatening illness to receive the spiritual strength of the Sacrament of the Sick. Priests will offer the Sacrament in both English and Spanish, so kindly invite those who might be in need of this grace and come yourself to pray with and for them. This is a great way for our parish to begin the Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis, which actually begins on December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

+++

The Accordion Pops Holiday Special Concert this year will be a fund-raiser for our St. Vincent de Paul Fund, which is extremely low as the needs of poor families in our parish and our area continue to increase. Please consider attending the concert this afternoon at 3pm in Conlon Hall, and, of course, donations in the poor box, to the food pantry, or for the St. Vincent’s Fund are always appreciated year ‘round.

+++

You are also invited this evening at 7pm at South Presbyterian Church adjacent to Coopers Pond for our annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service. Each congregation will have a witness of their gratitude. Canned goods or a free will offering for the Center for Food Action will be received. Refreshments will follow in the parish house across the street from the church.

+++

I was pleased to attend a meeting of various clergy members of many faiths with Chief Madalone and Capt. Rabboh last Tuesday at borough hall. We hope to be meeting quarterly to get to know one another better and to find ways of helping our community to continue to be the safe and outstanding community it is. For those who trade on Ebay or similar websites, you should know that the lobby of the borough hall has been established as a safe exchange place Monday through Friday, 8:30am-8:30pm.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Though we often think of civic holidays such as Memorial Day or the Fourth of July as the occasion for thinking about what it means to be a citizen, the Church offers us the feast of Christ the King at the end of the liturgical year as an opportunity to reflect on political duty in relationship to our duty to Christ and his reign. The scene in the Gospel of John of Jesus before Pilate is one of the most politically charged in all of scripture. It is an exchange concerning the nature of power and authority and truth. For Pilate, power and authority have been procured with military might; the claim of Jesus to be a king must have struck him as absurd. Jesus, however, claims that he has true authority, the authority that derives from truth—a claim that Pilate will reject with the cynical question, “What is truth?” before giving in to the crowd and sending Jesus off to be crucified. Of course, we are not citizens of imperial Rome. But in reflection on Jesus before Pilate, we should remember that even good nations like our own have to make us think about our loyalties. There is, of course, nothing wrong with loving your homeland. But as disciples of Jesus, the true ruler of all, our primary loyalty must be to Christ and the truth from which his power flows. “Lord Jesus Christ, King of kings and Prince of peace, help us to serve you by living in your truth, so that your saving love might reign throughout the world. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom does not belong to this world.’” John 18:36

How often do we put all our time and energy into building a kingdom here on earth, forgetting that life here is short? The real kingdom is in the next life. Yet, how much time and energy do we invest in working for that eternal kingdom?

Bill of Rights for Separated and Divorced Catholics The recent World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia and the Synod on the Family in Rome both revealed that many Catholics do not fully understand the place that the divorced and the separated have in the life of the Church. Many believe that they are excommunicated, cannot go to church, or receive the Eucharist. The insert in today’s bulletin should help clarify some of these issues. If you still have questions, please feel free to speak with one of the priests or Deacon Jim.
