Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend, Fr. Wilson Chu will be making an appeal for his diocesan seminary at all our Masses. Fr. Francesco will be leaving for his period of Itinerancy on September 12th. As mentioned last week, Fr. Francesco has been asked by Archdiocesan Officials of the Neocatechumenal Way to serve on an Itinerant Catechist team in Ohio. He will celebrate his final Mass with us on September 11th at 12 noon. All parishioners are invited to join us at a Farewell Reception for him, and for Fr. Wilson who will be leaving later that week, following the noon Mass, in Conlon Hall. Anyone willing to help with food or set up is asked to contact Fr. Arcadio who will be coordinating this dual reception.

The first group of parish families had their photos taken for our upcoming parish pictorial directory this past week. Group 2 will continue this coming week. There will be at least one additional week in September after our parish carnival for families who may have been away in August. I hope you will consider being one of our individuals or families to be photographed for this directory, copies of which will be shared solely among parishioners who participate and not provided for any commercial purpose. Remember, our directory will not be complete without you! You can call the toll free number (877-764-4535) to make your appointment, or go to our parish website (www.sjrc.org) and click on the photo directory icon on the home page to register. The company which is working on our directory is also contacting registered parishioners by phone who have not yet made an appointment to secure a photo time for their family. Any questions? Please contact Deacon Jim at 201-747-0713.

Speaking of our parish carnival, in addition to signing up to work some shifts in one of the booths, parishioners are asked to consider preparing some of the following items to be brought to our food booth on the nights of the carnival: fried chicken, meatballs, sausage and peppers. If you are willing to help with the food, please contact Lou Agnese at 201-387-8603 to let him known what and when.

I am pleased to announce that parishioner Marilis Pineiro has been accepted to enter religious life with the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George, in Alton, Illinois. The order, originally founded in Theune, Germany, first came to the U.S. in 1923. Sisters serve and staff hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, foreign missions, day care centers, retirement homes for the aged, as well as grade and high schools. Locally, some serve in Philadelphia and Metuchen. One issue which she must resolve is paying off her outstanding college loans, which total close to $80,000.00. To that end, she, her family, friends, and some parishioners are planning a series of fund raisers this fall to help her with this. We will be announcing more in upcoming weeks. Of course, you may also make donations directly for “Project Convent Bound.” We will let you know soon how best to do this. In the meantime, please keep Marilis in your prayers. Msgr. Richard Arnhols

    Reflection on Today’s Gospel

Jesus predicts his own suffering, death, and resurrection and then discusses the need for the disciples to bear their own suffering. The idea of a suffering Messiah did not conform to the expectations of the people, at least not to Peter’s. Jesus says that those who follow him must, like him, deny themselves any self-interest and self-fulfillment. The cost of drawing near to the living God can take us down a path we would rather not go. Peter saw this coming when Jesus began to speak of the suffering that lay ahead. God’s plan for us is the transformation and renewal of our minds according to the pattern of God’s Son Jesus. This transformation comes about when we seek to discern and do God’s will as Jesus did. Such self-offering may lead to our following Jesus on the way: finding life by losing it for the sake of others, and coming to know the living God as purifying fire, life-giving water, and nourishing food for our spirit.
