Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we provide the second insert from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on “Faithful Citizenship.” Please read and reflect on it. In their statement on “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”, the U.S. Catholic Bishops lift up various issues of different moral weight and urgency. Some issues they mention include: addressing abortion, euthanasia, the use of the death penalty and imprudent resort to war; protecting the fundamental understanding of marriage as the life-long and faithful union of one man and one woman; achieving comprehensive immigration reform; caring for our common home; helping families and children overcome poverty; providing healthcare while respecting human life, human dignity and religious freedom; and establishing and complying with more limits on the use of military force. Learn more about these issues and others at www.faithfulcitizenship.org today.

Reflection on Today’s Readings

How many times during the day do you hear yourself say, “Thank God”? Whether we receive good news or discover that something is not as bad as we had expected and at times in-between, we may often find ourselves uttering “Thank God!” And yet, do we thank God often enough for a new day, the gift of life, and the ability to breathe or move and live every moment of the day? Ten people with leprosy are healed. Only one returned to thank Jesus—a Samaritan, that is, a foreigner. Were the others ungrateful? We don’t know. They might have expressed their gratitude to God when they showed themselves to the priest to be readmitted to life in the community as prescribed by the law. We do know that Jesus affirms the grateful Samaritan’s faith. Did he begin to follow Jesus after this experience? We don’t know that either. After Naaman, another foreigner, was healed, he not only expressed faith in Elisha’s God, he also began to follow that God: “I will no longer offer holocausts or sacrifice to any other god except to the LORD.” The faith that saved him led him to a new way of life. We profess faith in Jesus Christ, as does the hymn in today’s second reading. Do we thank God for this faith throughout the day? Is our gratitude seen in lives that show we follow Jesus Christ? Who might surprise us by their lived faith? Pope Francis reminds us: “Jesus did not come to teach us philosophy or an ideology, but rather a way, a journey to be undertaken with him and we learn the way as we go, by walking.” Live that way and say clearly, “Thank God!” “Bountiful God, at Mass we pray that it is right and just to give you thanks. Let me begin and end each day by saying thank you, and help me live in ways that share my gratitude with those I meet. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Luke 17: 18

Most of us live “easy” lives. We have food, shelter, and clothing. We go on vacation every year and own a car or two. Most of us take this all for granted. Did you ever notice that people with the least amount of possessions are usually the most grateful? Shouldn’t this be the other way around? Take time every day and thank God for all He has given you.

(the lot across from Walgreens, next to Burger King) Saturday, October 15th ~ Pro-Life Walk - St. Phillip’s, Saddle Brook, NJ to Sacred Heart, Rochelle Park, NJ. Saturday, October 15th is also “National Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day.” Each and every day, in areas across the world, expectant moms will feel their baby’s first kick; parents will listen to their newborn’s first cry; and families will celebrate the birthday of a healthy baby. Also each and every day, 13 babies will be lost to SIDS and other sudden, unexpected infant deaths; more than 70 new parents will have listened sadly to their stillborn baby’s silence; and countless lives will be lost to miscarriage and others causes of infant death. On October 15th, in many parts of the world, people will light a candle and offer prayers in memory of those lost babies, born and unborn. In solidarity, let us join together and do the same here in our homes. If we light a candle and let it burn for at least 1 hour, there will be a continual wave of light across the world all day. May these children celebrate in heaven in the comfort of our Savior’s arms! Baby Bottle Drive donations are still being received, and at this point are above $4,000 and still climbing. All Baby bottle drive donations are forwarded to local pregnancy resource centers, such as Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center. Please return any bottles related to the Drive to the rectory, empty or full, as we reuse all bottles for next year’s drive.
