Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As you heard announced at all the Masses last weekend, our parish has started what has become its annual Catechesis on Monday and Thursday evenings at 8pm in the Notre Dame Chapel of the Parish Life Center. This series of instructions and shared experiences seeks to give participants a clear review and explanation of the Catholic Faith while also demonstrating how at least some parishioners have put this Faith into action. Our team this year especially invites young adults who may have been away from practicing their faith for awhile or those who would just like to know more about it to come and listen, although adults of all ages are welcome too!

+++

With all the recent natural disasters, parishioners have been asking what St. John’s might be doing. Last month the Cardinal authorized a special collection for Hurricane Harvey victims. It appears no additional national collection will be forthcoming, so we will take a special second collection at all the Masses next weekend, to be equally divided for victims of Hurricanes Irma & Maria, and the Mexican earthquake. Proceeds received will be sent to the US Bishops Conference to be equally applied to these three disasters, which would include Florida, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos, and Mexico.

+++

Attention, individuals and families living with disabilities: you can send greetings to Pope Francis which a group from our Archdiocese will bring to the Vatican this month. Guidelines for messages: Paper size: 8.5”x11”, format of greeting: pictures, words and/or photos. Possibilities to include: Hello! Your experience in the Church, your dreams for life in the Church. Please indicate if the message may be shared in ministry social media. Include parish and an email or cell phone number in case Anne Masters needs to contact you. It may be a digital file emailed or sent via post: Deadline October 4th!!! Please email or call Anne if you intend to send a message: [email protected] or 973-497-4309.

Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

How many times have you quickly agreed to do something and then failed to follow through? Or refused to do something only to rethink your position later and complete the job? Both instant willingness without follow-through and reluctant accountability can show weakness, a lack of love, and imprecision of purpose.

Combine the quick “yes” of the second son with the ultimate commitment of the first, and we see a snapshot of Jesus. He always sought the will of the Father, looked to God for the power to obey, and faithfully accomplished God’s will. Before creation, Jesus agreed to become man for our salvation. As God incarnate, He was perfected through suffering as He constantly sought to please His Father. It was through this obedience that He won for us salvation and reconcilation with God. Jesus never weighed the Father’s will against His own as we so often do. He was tempted and He suffered, but He “did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped”; rather, He “emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant...And being found in human form He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.”

Through His cross, Jesus paved the way for us to be obedient to the Father as well. We have but to receive the grace that is our inheritance as children of God. This is the reason He created us; we need not shrink back from difficult situations, but only look to Christ. In every situation, God only asks that we do our best without fear of failure or of what we might be losing. And, when we fall short, He graciously calls us to repent and be strengthened.

God our Father deeply desires to help us. Knowing our weakness, He continually invites us to turn to Him. “When a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is lawful and right, he shall save his life.”

In the Eucharist, we worship and honor Jesus; we ask for His mercy and receive His strength. Jesus paid a high price for us, agreeing to do the Father’s will and perfectly carrying it out despite the suffering. So great was His love for us that He held back nothing in rescuing us from sin. We have only to be open to Him to receive the precous gift of His love. In Jesus’ Body and Blood we have the guarantee of all that we seek and desire.

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Do nothing out of selfishness; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves...” - Philippians 2:3

Pride and ego are hard things to control. We see how others act or dress and think we are superior to them. We idolize our own self-image. But, if we truly believe everything is a gift from God, we recognize all the people that God has put in our lives as gifts! We are grateful for how they enrich our lives. Pray every day for the people in your life.

One Light, Many Candles ~ Unity in Diversity This Multi-faith Program will be presented at the Church of the Presentation on October 23, 2017, led by Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul and Mary) and Rev. Betty Stookey, an ordained minister (Harvard Divinity School). The evening is a celebration of unity in diversity that recognizes LOVE as the common calling to many different faiths. It blends together practices and teachings that are similar among a wide array of belief systems and is intended to strengthen the bonds between faiths. Multi-faith describes the ability to stand strong in one’s own faith, while reaching out a hand of tolerance, understanding and respect to those other beliefs. The program shifts from the spoken word to the sung word and back again combining Betty’s insightful and dynamic words about the power of God’s revelation, through many faiths, and Peter’s guitar and vocals.
