From the Desk of Fr. John

Welcome to St. John XXIII. Today’s Readings fo-cus on the beauty of love — beginning with God’s

love for each one of us, and also that life is fragile. Care is required in all relationships — particularly in marriage. The First Reading teaches us that human beings are made for each other. Take some time to make a list of the people with whom God has enriched your life. Thank God for them, and let them know you are grateful for their presence. We begin this Sunday with a Month dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, primarily because of the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th. Our Carillon bell system outside will play Marian hymns all month, and today nationwide is Respect Life Sunday. Throughout the Diocese, this weekend is a Second Collection for pro-life activities. Today at 12 Noon we will bless the animals in celebration of tomorrow’s Memorial of St. Francis. All animals are wel-come, so bring them. I had hoped to visit the SPCA tomorrow on behalf of the Parish to offer God’s blessings over the ani-mals, and am awaiting word on whether I have permission. Finally, our Chosen series continues to grow. We con-tinue to have one of the largest-attended events post-COVID. It is still not too late to join this series. Honestly, each epi-sode builds on the last and continues to draw you into the series. Come all to tomorrow’s series. You will love it! In Christ’s love, Fr. John. [email protected]

Our 2022 Mass Intention Book is open. $15/Mass Intention; $10/Candle. (Note that our 2021 Mass Intention Book also has openings). Let’s pray together for your loved ones as we enter the Season of Fall.

PRAY THE ROSARY The Rosary helps us meditate on the great mysteries of salvation. Pius XII called it a com-

pendium of the Gospel. The main focus is on Je-sus—His birth, life, death, and resurrection. The Our Father’s remind us that Jesus’ Father is the ini-tiator of salvation. The Hail Mary’s remind us to join with Mary in contemplating these mysteries. Mary was and is intimately joined with her Son in all the mysteries of His Earthly and Heavenly existence. The Glory Be’s remind us that all life is God’s glory.

WEST SENECA, NEW YORK Week of October 3, 2021

From the Desk of Jennifer Lang, Director of Faith Formation Today at 12 Noon, our Parish will have its annual pet blessing on the Vigil of St. Francis of Assisi Day (traditionally October 4, 2021). This is a time to remember that God cares for all of creation. St. Francis is the

Patron Saint of Ecology — because of his great love for animals — and, perhaps his ability to communicate with them. (He was the first Doctor Doolittle, even before Rex Harrison and Eddie Murphy). The first pet blessing I attended included an ant farm, the smallest of insects, and a police officer brought his horse, one of the largest animals. “All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all” — by Cecil Alexander. Jennifer Lang, Director of Faith Formation Email: [email protected]

Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, “It takes three to make love, not two: you, your spouse, and God.” Apart from the incar-nation of God in Jesus Christ, nothing speaks better of God’s incarnate love

than marriage. God designed it this way. We place great val-ue on love and rightly so. What we fail to realize, however, is that love, its very presence and place in our lives, is not simply part of the human package deal. Love comes from God. When we begin to realize that our very ability to love is sacred, it changes up how we see the essence of life, and pur-pose and sanctity of marriage. Honor, celebrate, and support those who have accepted a vocation to marriage. Find hope and inspiration from others on the same journey!

Our Lady of the Rosary (Oct. 7th) Saint Pius V established this Feast in 1573. The pur-pose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto—a victory attributed to the praying of the Rosary. Pope Clement XI extended the Feast to the Universal Church in 1716. The develop-ment of the Rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Mary’s. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giv-ing of the rosary to St. Dominic, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of St. Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the Apostle of the Rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th Century. In the 16th Century, the Rosary was developed to its pre-sent form—with the 15 mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added the five Mysteries of Light to this devotion.

TODAY’S GOSPEL. Beginning with today’s Gospel, Jesus returns to Judea (i.e., Jewish ter-ritory) and resumes His public ministry. The first verse of chapter 10 of Mark’s Gospel tells

us that crowds gathered around Jesus, and He taught them, as was His custom. Immediately, the Pharisees ap-proach Jesus to test Him. The Pharisees question Jesus about the lawfulness of divorce. These passages present a strong picture of Jesus’ emphasis on the importance of family. God intended for women and men to be joined together in marriage. Among the purposes of marriage is the raising of children. By welcoming children and fostering their relationship with God, parents and fami-lies bear witness to the Kingdom of God.

INSIDE THE APOSTLES’ CREED

“… HE DESCENDED INTO HELL; ON THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD; …” As truly man, Jesus experi-enced death. As truly God, Jesus went to “hell” in order to announce the Good News of Salvation. However, by “hell” the Creed does not mean only the place of the damned, but also the realm of those people who were deprived of the vision of God until the coming of the Sav-ior. Jesus announced the Good News of Salvation to the “righteous” dead (cf. Acts 3:15; 1 Cor 15:20; 1 Pt 3:18-19, 4:6), and opens the Gates of Heaven to them through his Resurrection. On the third day, Jesus appears as the Resurrected Lord to his Apostles and other disciples (cf. Mk 8:32, 9:9-31, 10:34).

St. Bruno (October 6th)

St. Bruno (1030-1101), was born in Cologne,

Germany, became a famous teacher at Reims,

and was appointed Chancellor of the Archdio-

cese at the age of 45. He supported Pope

Gregory VII in his fight against the decadence

of the clergy, and took part in the removal of his own scan-

dalous Archbishop. He had a dream of living in solitude

and prayer. St. Bruno and six companions went to the

mountains of Chartreuse where they built a Chapel. Six

years later, he was called to Rome by Pope Urban II. He

gave up his life of silence and prayers to be an advisor to the

Pope. St. Bruno is considered the founder of the Carthusi-

an Monks, who live a life of poverty, silence, prayer, and

penance. The Carthusian motto is “While the world chang-

es, the cross stands firm.” He was canonized in 1514, and is

the patron of the possessed. St. Bruno, pray for us.
