Are you passionate about social justice? Would you like to help Anglican Overseas Aid work towards a peaceful, just and sustainable world for all? We are looking for volunteer ambassadors to be advocates of our work within your local parish or community group.

As a volunteer ambassador you will receive training, support and regular updates on our work. Your role would be to inform your parish or community group about our current projects and emergency appeals, inspiring and encouraging people to get involved. Throughout 2013 we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary with a series of events and talks that we would also ask you to promote and be a part of.

Messy Church

All Welcome Messy Church is soon to kick off for the year. Sunday March 3rd is coming around and everyone is keen to start the year—especially the children. There is a dedicated team who work together to ensure all that attend have a fun filled and entertaining time. Each month a meal is shared after the children have completed activities, including craft making and games as well as a brief service in the Church.

If you would like to become involved in helping with Messy Church we would love to hear from you! We are always looking for people who could assist with the cooking (simple meals such as Spaghetti Bolognese, Roast Chicken and veggies etc) all ingredients are supplied and can be cooked either in the Buxton Hall kitchen or at home. Setting up and clearing away of tables is also a job we could use a hand with if you are free 20mins prior to Messy Church or could lend a hand for about 20 mins after

Please speak to Brad or email Nicky [email protected] if you would like to be involved even as a once off!

THE LORDS PRAYER The Lord’s Prayer is said by all, immediately after the Thanksgiving Prayer. At St. John’s the traditional form of the prayer is said by all as written below Vicar: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory For ever and ever. Amen.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. The Ash Wednesday service at St John’s will be at: 7.30pm on Wednesday 13th February The service includes the traditional imposition of ashes on the foreheads of those attending, in the context of the Eucharist. An introduction to the season – from Common Worship (The Church of England), Lent may originally have followed Epiphany, just as Jesus’ sojourn in the wilderness followed immediately on his baptism, but it soon became firmly attached to Easter, as the principal occasion for baptism and for the reconciliation of those who had been excluded from the Church’s Fellowship for apostasy or serious faults. This history explains the characteristic notes of Lent – self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter, to which almsgiving has traditionally been added. Now is the healing time decreed for sins of heart and word and deed, when we in humble fear record the wrong that we have done the Lord. (Latin, before 12th century) As the candidates for baptism were instructed in Christian faith, and as penitents prepared themselves, through fasting and penance, to be readmitted to communion, the whole Christian community was invited to join them in the process of study and repentance, the extension of which over forty days would remind them of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by Satan. Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence; from the middle ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross.
