7. Speed i) Average Speed
ii) Uniform Speed
iii) Non Uniform Speed
8. Velocity i) Average Velocity
ii) Instantaneous Velocity
iii) Uniform Velocity
iv) Non Uniform velocity.
7. Speed: Distance covered by a body per unit time.
Speed = Distance / time.
 Unit: CGS cm/s
 SI m/s
 Vector Quantity
i) Average Speed: It is the total distance travelled by a body divided by total
time taken.
Average Speed = Total Distance/Total time.
ii) Uniform Speed: If a body covers equal distances in equal intervals of time,
however small the time intervals may be.
iii) Non Uniform Speed: If a body covers equal distances in unequal intervals
of time.
8. Velocity: It is the distance travelled by the body per unit time in a particular
direction.
 Velocity = Displacement/time
 Unit: CGS cm/s
 SI m/s
 Vector Quantity
i) Average Velocity: Total displacement made by the body divided by total
time taken.
ii) Instantaneous Velocity: Velocity of a body at a particular instant.
iii) Uniform Velocity: If a body covers equal distances in equal intervals of
time in a particular direction.
iv) Non Uniform velocity: If a body covers different distances in equal
intervals of time or same distances in unequal intervals of time in a particular
direction.

1. Which of the following can sometimes be ‘zero’ for a moving body?
i. Average velocity ii. Distance travelled
iii. Average speed iv. Displacement
(a) Only (i) (b) (i) and (ii) (c) (i) and (iv) (d) Only (iv)
2. Distinguish between speed and velocity.
3. From the table given below, can you identify which one is having uniform and non-
uniform motion? Give reasons
4. Will speed and velocity are always equal in magnitude? Support your answer.
5. ___________________ of the body is the total distance travelled divided by the total
time taken to cover the distance.
6. Assertion (A): The velocity of a body is a scalar quantity.
Reason(R): A vector has both magnitude and direction.
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true but R is not correct explanation of A.
c) A is true but R is false. d) A is false but R is true.
7. What is the difference between uniform velocity and non-uniform velocity? Support
your answer with example.
8. Read each of the following statements and write if it is true or false.
a) Magnitude of displacement can be equal to or lesser than distance.
b) A body can have constant velocity and still have varying speed.
c) The movement of the earth about its axis is an example of uniform speed.
d) SI unit of speed is cm/s.

LESSON-5:CELL THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE
Synopsis :
DISCOVERY OF CELL :
The smallest functional unit of life is cell, discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665. A cell
can independently perform all necessary activities to sustain life. Hence cell is the basic
unit of life. There are two types of cells → plant cell and animal cell.
CELL THEORY :
Cell theory states that living things are composed of one or more cells, that the cell is the
basic unit of life, and cells arise from pre-existing cells
UNICELLULAR AND MULTICELLULAR ORGANISMS :
DIVISION OF LABOUR :
Multicellular organisms are made up of millions and trillions of cells. All these cells
perform specific functions. All the cells specialised for performing similar
functions are grouped together as tissues in the body. Hence, a particular function
is carried out by a group of cells at a definite place in the body. Similarly, different
functions are carried out by different groups of cells in an organism and this is known
as the division of labour in multicellular

Civic : Le 2 (What is Democracy why Democracy)
PART 3 SYNOPSIS
One person, one vote, one value one value
Democracy is based on a fundamental principle of political equality. However, there
are many instances of denial of the equal right to vote. Until 2015, in Saudi Arabia,
women did not have the right to vote. Estonia has made its citizenship rules in such a
way that people belonging to the Russian minority found it difficult to get the right to
vote. In Fiji, the electoral system is such that the vote of an indigenous Fiji has more
value than that of an Indian-Fijian. Definitely not a democratic government. The feature

of democracy this highlights is that in a democracy, each adult citizen must have one
vote and in turn, each vote must have one value.
Rule of law and respect for rights
Zimbabwe attained independence from White minority rule in 1980 and from then
the country has been ruled by the party that led the freedom struggle, ZANU-PF. Its
leader,
Robert Mugabe ruled the country since independence. Even if elections were held
regularly, it was always won by ZANU-PF. President Mugabe was popular but also
used unfair practices
in elections. There was a law that limited the right to criticise the President.
Television and radio were controlled by the government and gave only the ruling
party’s version. There were independent newspapers but the government harassed those
journalists who went against it and so on. Not a democratic government. Democratic
government rules within limits set by constitutional law and citizens’ rights.
Hence, we can deduce that democracy is a form of government in which:
Rulers elected by the people take all the major decisions
Elections offer a choice and fair opportunity to the people to change the current rulers
This choice and opportunity is available to all the people on an equal basis
The exercise of this choice leads to a government limited by basic rules of the
constitution and citizens’ rights
