Student Support

Gifts to Student Support directly help to fund the many student bursaries, grants and scholarships that St John’s offers, encouraging bright applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds and helping to provide access to those who need it most.

What can my gift achieve?

We hope you had a wonderful time whilst you were a student at St John’s. Giving to the Alumni Fund is an opportunity to support the next generation of students so that they can benefit from their time here as much as you did.

St John’s is proud to be one of the best colleges in Oxford for supporting students and ensuring that financial background is not a barrier to success. The diversity of students studying such a wide range of subjects is what makes St John’s such a lively and stimulating environment. We achieve this with your help, and hope the kind and loyal generosity of our alumni community may long continue. Thank you.

If you have not already done so, please consider making a regular gift today to help ensure that St John’s continues to thrive for many generations to come. The Alumni Fund addresses immediate need in College on an annual basis; with your help we aim to raise £500,000 per year.

“St John’s generosity to its students is incredible and it creates the optimum study environment. St John’s is open to every individual and works hard to remove any barriers blocking people from coming here and studying successfully.”

Joseph Larvin (2009, Medicine)

College Life

Besides student support and the tutorial system, many alumni choose to help fund other areas of College life: buildings and facilities; research; arts, music and sports. You can express a preference for the area you would like to support when you make your gift.

£20 per month for a year could fund the average Hardship Grant

£5 per month could fund a Book Grant

Why support St John’s?

What can my gift achieve?

The Tutorial System

The tutorial system is the hallmark and strength of an Oxford education. Gifts help the College to maintain tutorial Fellows in as many subjects as possible, enabling us to provide a world-class education.

All donors to St John’s become members of our Benefactors’ Network. Members receive invitations to benefactors’ networking receptions and regular reports on how their support has made a difference to the College.

The 1555 Society recognises benefactors who make regular and sustained contributions to St John’s, acknowledging the value of the education they received here and showing support for our vision of the future.

Members of the 1555 Society have pledged to give £1,555 over 5 years, the equivalent of £21 per month plus Gift Aid. For those under the age of 30, membership to the society starts at £10 per month plus Gift Aid.

All 1555 Society members receive a donor pin depicting the College crest.

“St John’s...gave me the chance of a lifetime for a wonderful tertiary education and many great experiences. I am very grateful for that and decided to help some other aspiring students have similar experiences...” Brian Swale (1961, Forestry)
