Gospel and Reflection: Luke 9:18-24
One day when Jesus was praying alone in the presence of his disciples he put this
question to them, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ And they answered, ‘John the
Baptist; others Elijah; and others say one of the ancient prophets come back to life.’
But you,’ he said ‘who do you say that I am?’ It was Peter who spoke up. ‘The Christ
of God’ he said. But he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone anything about this.
‘The Son of Man’ he said ‘is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief
priests and scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third day.’
Then to all he said, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up
his cross every day and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who
loses his life for my sake, that man will save it.’
VISION STATEMENT
St John’s Primary School strives to foster a community of faith that is centred on the teachings of Christ, where love and
concern develops the whole child, empowering each individual to realize his/her potential.
Reflection
When Jesus asked the disciples “Who do the crowds say that I am?” the replies indicated that the people were trying to
place Jesus in terms of their previous knowledge and experience of prophets. The people had sensed that Jesus was more
like a prophet than a political agitator. But they seemed unable to expand their thinking beyond that of their experience of
current prophets like John the Baptist or the ancient prophets like Elijah. It was Peter, led by the Holy Spirit, who went be-
yond his experience to identify Jesus as the Christ.
Experience is a major factor in our interpretation of the world around us and the people we meet. Experience can help in
the making of wise decisions, but it can also limit what we see and it can limit our openness to the inspirations of the Holy
Spirit.
The people saw Jesus as having the same standing a prophet, therefore he was someone to be listened to and respected.
This categorization worked in his favour with the crowd, who had nothing to lose and everything to gain from having a
prophet in their midst. For the Pharisees and others in authority the possibility that Jesus was a prophet was alarming as it
represented a challenge to their power.
We can stereotype or categorize people in ways which can be either positive or negative. Negative stereotyping is always
harmful; positive stereotyping at least allows a person the chance to be accepted, but it can also limit our understanding of
the individual with all his or her potential, talents and weaknesses. The people stereotyped Jesus in a good way, as a proph-
et, but did not make the leap to seeing him as the Messiah. Peter’s faith-filled statement about Jesus was inspired by the
Holy Spirit. The same Spirit can lead us beyond our experience into new insights and understanding of others and of Jesus
himself, if we are prepared to let go of our pre-conceptions and stereotype.
Have a wonderful week and God Bless
Anthony O’Leary

SCHOOL FEES NOTICE
If you have chosen the option to pay your school fees by the Term, a gentle reminder that Term 2 fees are due Monday 20 June 2016.
If you have set up a payment plan (Direct Debit; Credit Card; Centrelink deductions) to clear your fees by the end of this school year, you do not need to pay the Balance Outstanding that is showing on your statement by the due date. However, please check that the payments you have made to date are correct. It is also a good idea to check it against your bank state-ment. File in a safe place if needed for further reference.
If for any reason you have overlooked adjusting your payment plan for this year, it is not too late to do so. Please contact the St John’s Primary School Fees Office on 6884 8504 to make the necessary arrangements.
As we are nearing the end of the financial year, the question has been asked as to whether or not the Diocesan Capital Works Levy is claimable as a tax deduction. As this is a Compulsory Levy it is not claimable.

Technology News:
Year 3 students are developing further capabilities with technology through creating a product about “Old Dubbo”. They are researching different aspects of how Dubbo looked in the past and the changes that have occurred. Students have used their tools to create a slide show of their learning to record and share their work. Stage 2 and 3 staff are using our Hapara system to distribute, collaboratively construct, give student feedback effectively and monitor student engagement. Technology Safety:
It is good practice to regularly check and reset your security and other settings in the many different accounts you have. Gmail/Google settings are accessed through the gear icon in the top right corner. You can click on general to review your settings. You can set or change many settings here, including your signature and an “undo” tools for recalling emails within a minute of sending them.
Library News
This week in the library we will be listening to Roald Dahl’s BFG to coincide with the release of the new BFG Movie. Roald Dahl was a famous British novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and also served as a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He has been referred to as “one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century”, writing almost 50 books in his career, along with many more screenplays, poems and short stories. The BFG was said to have been Roald Dahl’s favourite of all his stories. The character of the Big Friendly Giant and his idiosyncratic way of talking, known as gobblefunk is one that has delighted audiences ever since its publication in 1982.
Every night, when the world is sleeping, big gruesome giants guzzle up whoppsy-whiffling human beans. And there’s only one giant who can stop them – the BFG. He’s the kindest giant there is and, with his friend Sophie in his top pocket., he sets out to rid the world of the Bloodbottler, the Fleshlumpereater and all their rotsome friends forever…. .
This year the talents of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg unite to bring Dahl’s
beloved classic The BFG to life. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s BFG tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant
who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG comes to the big screen on June 30.
Now is the time to reread The BFG or discover the Big Friendly Giant’s story for the first time!
Happy Reading,
Maree Williams
