Reflections, Announcements, News, Thoughts The Pastor’s RANT…

that touches off this special experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Traditionally the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, be-tween the feasts of St Peter and St Paul. Please join us once again as we pray and work for the commun-ion of all, joining our prayer to that of the Lord Je-sus Christ, "that all may be one" (John 17:21).

FYI… The Parish Office will be closed on Monday Jan-uary 16 in observance of the Martin Luther King,, Jr. Holiday. There will be ONE MASS ON-LY AT 9:00AM.

PRAYERS & PATIENCE PLEASE… I will be away for the next few weeks while having a surgical procedure and then time for recovery. It shouldn’t be more than a few weeks. We ask for your patience and understanding in any issues with priest availability during this time. We are grateful to the priests who will be covering the masses and sacramental needs during Fr. Pat’s recovery.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

We are grateful to Bishop Chavez and all who par-ticipated and helped with last week’s celebration of the Black Nazarene Mass. May we all be blessed in our worship of Jesus under the title of the Black Nazarene.

Have a blessed and holy week. In Christ’s love, Fr. Pat

Respecting Human Life Recalling the Anniversary of

Roe v. Wade 40+ years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States, in their Roe vs. Wade decision, legalized abortion in our country. The tragedy of this decision is the millions of lives lost over these several dec-ades, the women and men who have been devastated by a choice often made in crisis, and the diminished reverence for the sacredness of every human life. Please make a daily commitment to pray for conver-sion and repentance that we might build a culture of life. May we come to embrace and defend the dignity of every human life created in the image and likeness of God!

San Diego Walk for Life You are invited to attend the Fifth Annual San Diego Walk for Life on Saturday, January 21, 2017, from 8:30 a.m. to Noon in Balboa Park on Sixth Ave. and Laurel St. Speakers this year include: Bishop Robert McElroy, Fr. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 18-25

Reconciliation-The Love of Christ Compels Us. (cf. 2 Cor 5:14-20)

At least once a year, Christians are reminded of Je-sus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecu-menical celebrations and prayer services. The event

Faith Formation is a vital element of every Catholic parish. The role of parish faith formation is to provide organized and systematic approach to the instruction and practice of the faith for everyone in the parish community. The goal of this formation is to give each member an understanding of their faith so they can evangelize and witness to the faith in the greater secu-lar community. The programs offered at Saint Jo-seph’s Cathedral parish reflect the diversity of an ur-ban Southern California parish. In addition to the weekly catechetical program special events and speakers are presented throughout the parish’s pastoral year.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) RCIA an Invitation for everyone

to Community in Christ. At St. Joseph Cathedral’s parish community we be-lieve that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA process. The RCIA’s invitation is for those individu-als who have not been baptized and wish to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic Faith Community. The invitation is for those from other Christian Faith communities who wish to be-come members of the Roman Catholic Church. Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist will find the invitation is for them to complete those sacraments. Catholics who have not been active in their faith and wish to return to an active sacramental relationship with the faith community will find the RCIA a place to have that journey. Also, Catholics who wish to renew their faith by refreshing their knowledge of the church’s teaching are most welcome. Evangelization and Catechesis are the hallmarks of the RCIA at St. Joseph Cathedral. For more information write Bill Bischoff at [email protected] or call the Parish Office.

Sunday Children’s Faith Formation - Classes meet every Sunday in the Auditorium.

English Classes 9:00 - 10:30am Spanish Classes

Youth Confirmation - The Sacrament of Confirma-tion is a two year faith journey. During those two years, the youth and their families are expected to par-ticipate in Confirmation Preparation Ministry. Classes are held every other Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00pm in the Auditorium. Please contact Sr. Ruth Marie Barreda [email protected]. Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator, Sonia Escamilla at the Parish Office at 619-239-0229 or [email protected]. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least two (2) months in ad-vance of a desired baptismal date. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sac-ramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor. If you are a registered parishioner at St. Joseph Cathe-dral and need a letter of good standing in order to be a godparent for a baptism at another parish, please call the Office.

Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacra-ment of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website www.scdcathedral.org to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at (619)239-0229 and ask to speak to the Wedding Coordinator, Lynn Martinez. Couples are expected to contact us at least 9 months in advance of the date in which they hope to celebrate their wed-ding.

Faith Formation

St. Joseph Cathedral January 15, 2017 Page 7 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
