LENTEN REGULATIONS
1.Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2.Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meat-less meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. Stations of the Cross Come join us, as we pray and meditate on Jesus’ Stations of the
Cross. Every Friday beginning March 3rd , at 6:30 pm (English) and 8:00 pm (Spanish).

Each day at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet we meet individuals and families who need an angel -- veterans who have lost their homes, single mothers who seek warm clothes for their children, and seniors who are forced to choose be-tween paying rent and buying food. Thankfully, we have found someone who is so special and generous… that he is almost like an angel on earth. This anonymous donor wants to team up with you to continue to help our struggling neighbors. For every dollar you do-nate, our special angel will match it – up to $50,000. Please be generous. This is an opportunity to help someone who will have nowhere else to turn if Catholic Charities isn’t there to help. Please send in a donation by May 31st. Make checks payable to: Catholic Charities Angel Fund 16555 Weber Rd. Crest Hill, IL 60403 Donations can also be made at catholiccharitiesjoliet.org or by calling Claudia at 815-724-1140. Bless you for your support of Catholic Charities. Together we are doing God’s work – changing and saving lives! If you can’t send a gift, please remember the vulnerable and needy in your prayers.

F ifth Sunday of Lent Greater Than You Expect Sometimes a prophet says more than he intended.
Ezekiel in the first reading is talking about restoring Israel after the Babylonian exile. The Jews saw the Exile as pun-ishment for their sins, especially the sin of relying on false gods or political leaders for their safety. God demonstrates forgiveness by bringing them back to Israel; God also shows them divine power and glory so that they return to the Lord for their protection. Ezekiel uses the image of the dead rising from their graves (37:12). Jesus came to show us God in a new way and to fulfill the promises of all previous prophecies. Notice how the first reading repeats two phrases: "open your graves" and "know that I am the LORD." Jesus demonstrates that God's promise is much greater than anything Ezekiel ex-pected. First, the Gospel. When Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus, he apparently waited till his friend had died. He knew that he was going to raise Lazarus from death to help his disci-ples believe. So why was he "perturbed and deeply trou-bled"? It could be that he was disappointed that his friends did not seem to believe that he could raise Lazarus. Notice Jesus became perturbed again when some of the crowd question Jesus' ability to do so (John 11:37-38). Like Ezeki-el, the people of Jesus' time did not expect him literally to raise the dead. But God used the prophet's message to pre-pare for Jesus' message that not only would he rise from the dead, but we will also. And like the friends and rela-tives of Lazarus, we too may find it hard to believe, or at least question how it could be possible. Fortunately, Jesus helps with that, too. Look at the second reading to the Romans. Because we have God's Spirit living in us, we who are sinners can be raised to new life by that Spirit. When our sins are forgiv-en, we begin to live a new life by loving the people we hurt by our sins, forgiving people who have hurt us, being more concerned for the poor than for our own comfort. We are freed from worrying about the future, from holding onto grudges, and perhaps even from the fear of death itself--all be-cause we have experi-enced the new life of God's Spirit and, as Ezekiel says, know that God is the LORD. In the last few weeks the students of Holy Family Catholic School have been treated to classroom visits by Father Josh. On Friday, March 17th he visited the 8th grade during Religion class. He led a discussion about preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, what Confirmation means, and how it is an im-portant part of our faith journeys. Father Josh enjoyed his first experience using the SMART board and has promised a return visit. The students are already thinking of new topics to discuss.
