Page 2: St Joseph Catholic Church † Iglesia Catolica San Jose · that God can do more than man can understand. He ... Maria L Cortez, David Fuentes, Maria G Xinaxtle, Ofelia ... Kevin Ocampo,

In the Catholic Spiritual Tradition, we require certain basic attitudes that will facilitate our love for Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. Primarily we should abstain from the tendency for a curious and vain examination of this Sacrament which will only lead into the depths of doubt. We must recognize the truth that God can do more than man can understand. He will allow a pious and humble search for truth. This search is ever ready to learn and seeks to walk in the reasonable doctrine of the Fathers.

We have to have a level of simplicity that leaves the difficult way of dispute and goes forward on the firm path of God’s commandments. Searching beyond our limits only results in our loss of the devotion which is essential for every believer. We have to submit ourselves to God and humble reason to faith and we will receive the light of understanding. There are some who are gravely tempted concerning the faith and the Sacrament. When the tempting moments arise, do not dispute in the mind nor answer the doubts sent by the devil. We must believe the words of God and the teachings of His saints and prophets. The evil enemy will flee from you. Satan does not tempt unbelievers and sinners whom he already holds securely. In many ways the devil does tempt and trouble the faithful servant. We must approach this Sacrament with sincere and unflinching faith and humble reverence. Whatever we do not understand we must leave to the all-powerful God who does not deceive us. If we trust in ourselves, we will be deceived. God walks with sincere persons, reveals Himself to humble people, enlightens the understanding of pure minds, and hides His grace from the curious and the proud. Human reason is mostly weak and can be deceived. True faith cannot be deceived. All reason and natural science ought to come after faith, not go before it, nor oppose it. In this most Holy and supremely excellent sacrament, faith and love take precedence and work in a hidden manner.

God, eternal, incomprehensible, and infinitely powerful, does great and inscrutable things in heaven and on earth, and there is no searching into His marvelous works. If all the works of God were such that human reason can easily grasp them, they would not be called wonderful or beyond the power of words to tell.

Simple faith and humble devotion are two habits that we should train our children very early in their lives, even before they get glued to the media messages and gadgets of the enticing entertainment world. God bless you all.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eucharistic Prayer IV is, like Eucharistic Prayer III, a fresh composition from the 1960s, based on a prayer from the tradition of the ancient church of Alexandria. It has an interesting structural feature. The new prayers all nod toward the East with the epiclesis, or calling down of the Spirit, over the gifts. In this prayer the Spirit is asked to come down again, after the consecration, to make holy the communicants who “partake of this one Bread and one Chalice that, gathered into one body by the Holy Spirit, they may truly become a living sacrifice in Christ to the praise of your glory.” This beautiful phrase is well worth meditating on. What is the goal of your reception of Holy Communion today?

The preface for this Eucharistic Prayer is firmly attached to the prayer, and the directives for using the prayer anchor it to Ordinary Time. It is not intended to be an option if the Mass has a proper preface of its own, like a funeral, a Lenten weekday, or a great feast. It is not often used these days, in part because of these limitations. At first, it was suggested that this prayer was better suited to small groups of people who were well educated in scripture. This was kind of an odd stipulation, especially since its images are so beautiful and worthy of attention. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD’S WAYS

In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The Lord’s way is not fair!”(Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
