Our PSR Family PicnicWas a Wonderful Time for All

Held at Engler ParkOur Parish School of Religion had its last class by celebrating with a picnic at Engler Park. We sincerely thank everyone for another outstanding year of religious education for our children. The evening was very well attended. Our sincere thanks to Amy Williams and Marge Dill for organizing the evening and to Dolores Eddleman for being the chef of the grill.

Worker Sign Ups THIS Weekend!!Our Parish Picnic is Only

5 Weeks Away…Our parish picnic is just 5 weeks away!!! THIS WEEKEND May 19 & 20 after all masses we will have worker sign ups in the Parish Center Hall. We need everyone to be involved so that we can make this year’s picnic one of the best ever for our parish! Please mark your calendars now for the weekend of June 23 - 24 to be present to help with the major fundraising event of our parish. We really need everyone’s help!!! Please sign up to work and give of your time and talents for our parish picnic, see page 12 &13.

Plants for the Greenhouseat Our Annual Parish Picnic!

We will again have our St. Joseph Greenhouse this year. This is where you can donate houseplants, bulbs, seedlings, anything from your garden that can be planted. Do your lilies, hydrangeas, irises, flowers need thinning? If so, we would love to have them to sell at our greenhouse!

Our Picnic Bottle Booth Needs Your Help

When you do your weekly grocery shopping could you pick up a couple of bottles for our bottle booth? Our picnic bottle booth has absolutely NO overhead and always generates a great profit. Every year we run out of bottles with people still wanting to play. As long as it is nonperishable, unopened, and hasn’t expired, we would love to have it. Please see page 13 for ideas.

Our Father’s Table Today! We hope to see you TODAY, May 20 at 4:00 pm in the school cafeteria for a great meal and great fellowship. This month’s menu is Baked Fish with Rice Pilaf. Our Father’s Table is an amazing meal and a ministry that truly reaches out to our community.

And Finally… “Always remember that as long as we keep the Eucharist the center of our lives, everything else will fall in place...of that I am confident”!!!

Blessings of Peace…Fr. Rickey

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.

-St. Augustine

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same

Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord;

there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in

everyone.” – 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6All of us are blessed, regardless of our own individual circumstances; God has given each of us many gifts. How we use those gifts is our gift back to God. For God’s plan to work, each must do what we are called to do and guess what – we are not all called to do the same thing!

The feast of Pentecost invites us to reflect prayerfully upon the Holy Spirit. Our readings today reveal three distinct views of the Holy Spirit. In Acts, the Spirit moves powerfully and unpredictably, sometimes in disorienting ways, to renew the world. In Paul, the Spirit unites the church in Jesus into one body, and provides many varied and complementary gifts to the church. In John, the Spirit continues the healing and forgiving presence of Jesus, and empowers his followers to extend the ministry of Jesus to the whole world. Pentecost teaches us that the Holy Spirit speaks and acts in many ways: to comfort us, to shake us up, and to open us to something new. Always, the Spirit is communicating God's love. Just like those who first heard God's proclamation in many languages, we might hear the Spirit who penetrates our hearts, speaking the many languages of love.

ENCOUNTERING CULTUREWe listen today, in Acts, of how very diverse individuals, all Jewish, heard the proclamation of Jesus in their own languages. These were likely diaspora Jews who had lived in other lands and had learned different languages and cultures. Throughout the book, the author of Acts is hinting at what will happen later. The Good News will be received by different peoples and cultures. There will be dialogue between Jesus' message and each culture, and the message will take root within the culture. Many persons will reject Jesus, but those who accept him will learn to proclaim Jesus, and join in the Spirit's work of transforming the culture. We too are invited to join God's mission in our own culture, approaching with both humility and boldness. We are to be servants, companions, and some-times prophets, always with charity and openness. The Spirit calls us both to engage in dialogue with others and to proclaim Jesus with our lives.

GIFTS TO BE SHAREDThrough Paul's ministry in Corinth, the Christian community there had sprung up quickly. A variety of spiritual gifts were enthusiastically shared. But that variety led to arguments among them. Some believed that some gifts, such as speaking in tongues, were more important. Those with certain gifts gained honor and status in the community. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul challenged this. He wrote that all are gifted, and all gifts come from the Holy Spirit. The gifts, though quite varied, are fundamentally equal in importance. They have one shared purpose, to proclaim and live the good news of Jesus. Each of us is invited to consider how the Spirit has given us gifts within the Church to participate in God's mission in the world. Our gifts are valuable and distinctly ours. But they are no better or worse than the gifts of others. All are given to serve our common purpose. With both humility and boldness, let us share our gifts.

“Citizenship Essay - Going to the Peripheries”Madelyn Williams

St. Kateri Tekakwitha by Madelyn Williams

When I think of going to the peripheries, I don’t necessarily think of the literal peripheries like the border of a country. I think of your own, personal peripheries. For example, going to the limit and beyond with either your job or school. Going to your peripheries could also mean pushing the limits in your knowledge of something and having a major breakthrough. Personal peripheries don’t have to be something big like the major breakthrough, but just by doing as much as you can to help your city and doing all you can for God to show you are thankful for all he has done. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is an example of going to your own personal peripheries. Saint Kateri was a Mohawk woman, whose father was a highly favored warrior. When she was four years old, her father, mother, and little brother died of smallpox. Kateri survived with scars and became nearly blind. Due to her tribe’s rules, she was adopted by her extended family.

When Kateri became a teenager, she heard the word of God for the first time. As soon as she heard about the God who sacrificed himself to save humanity, Kateri wanted to become a Catholic. She believed that faith should be treated as a gift to God for what he has done for us. She wanted to learn everything she could about God and his works. Her family strongly disagreed with her. Kateri was beaten, underfed, overworked, and neglected for her new beliefs.

At age twenty, Kateri was secretly baptised into Catholicism. People did eventually find out about her new religion. They rejected Kateri and threatened her life many times. Kateri did not let them stop her. Everyday, she would sneak off into the woods to pray to God for an hour.

A few months after her baptism, Kateri left her village. She went on a two-hundred mile journey to a Christian/Indian village in modern-day Montreal. At the mission, Kateri wanted to become a part of the convent, but was unable to join. There is no documented reason why she could not join. That did not stop her. Even though Kateri could not become a nun, she still decided to take a private vow of chastity and love to only God. She wanted to live a life of service to others and help people in the village. She taught young children simple prayers and took care of the sick and elderly in the village who could not help themselves. When she died, her last words were “Jesus, I love you!”. After her death, Kateri’s face miraculously healed from its scars. Her skin became smooth and her appearance reflected her inner beauty. Saint Kateri is widely known for her strong belief in God, even though she suffered and was rejected by her tribe. She never complained about anything nor did she blame God for how she was treated. Kateri was praised for her kindness and help for others. She did not choose to serve others for her own gain. Her only goal in life was to give back to God all that He has done for humanity.

In conclusion, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha went to the peripheries for a native woman of her time. She showed everyone that following her belief and loving God no matter what made her a strong woman. She showed everyone that a life of service and love for God should be our main goal in life. We should not care about what others think of us as long as we know that God still loves us and will always take care of us. Saint Kateri was an example of how God’s love can make us, our family, and our lives truly happy, patient, generous, and full of love and peace.

It has recently been brought to St. Vincent de Paul and St. Joseph's attention that even if you make your check to St. Joseph in the St. Vincent de Paul envelope you will not get the 50% tax credit as if you wrote the check out to St. Vincent de Paul.

Because of this, if you are wanting the 50% tax break, then when using the St. Vincent de Paul envelope please make the check out to St. Vincent de Paul instead of St. Joseph. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please call the parish office at 756-4250 if you have any questions.

We say we are pro-life, but do we show it?

Want to help? The Pregnancy Resource Center has asked local churches to host a MOMs’ (Mothers Outreach Ministries) Night Out during the summer for clients and their families. Our parish has agreed to sponsor MOMs’ Night Out on June 11 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The two hours are broken down into several segments, including childcare, providing a practical lesson, touring our church and giving moms and their families a small meal or snack. By inviting them to visit our church, we have the opportunity to impact not only the clients but also their families. Many of the clients have never attended a church and this gives them a chance to experience the love and care a church family has to offer.

If you can help, we will have a planning meeting on May 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Please come! If you can’t come to the meeting, please call Dotty Bach (756-1357) or Pat Boatright (756-4169) and they can give you the details. We appreciate any help you can give - the clients are so grateful for the support they get at these events!

Calming the Emotional Storms
