Dec. 10th, Second Sunday of Advent:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This second Sunday of Advent is in the middle to two Marian celebrations, the Immaculate Conception of the Blesses Virgin Mary,

December 8th and Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12th. How appropriate that these two Feast Days fall within the early days of Advent. Mary’s Immaculate Conception in the womb of her mother Ann is the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s promise that the “Virgin will be with child.” As we heard in the reading of the Book of Genesis last Friday, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike at your head while you strike at his heel.” Mary gives birth to her offspring, Jesus, who will crush the head of the serpent. The angel Gabriel brings the fulfillment of the promise with his announcement to Mary that she will conceive a child whose name will be Jesus, which means “God saves.” God chose to allow the Virgin Mary’s “yes” to be the decisive moment of salvation. This Tuesday, we celebrate the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Juan Diego. At a time of paganism and the culture of death, God, once again, chose the Virgin with child to be a moment of salvation for Mexico, and all of Latin America and as far as the Philippine Islands. Mary appeared to Juan Diego pregnant. When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth she was pregnant with Jesus and Elizabeth said, “Who am I that the Mother of my Lord should come to me.” Who does the Blessed Mother bring, but Jesus. Mary is an image of “Hope.” Mary is a model of how to bring Jesus to a troubled world. As Mary’s “Yes” allowed room to be made for Jesus, so we too say “Yes” to God’s word and allow it to be made into flesh in us. When we say yes to God, we bring Jesus with us. As Mary’s head is bowed in humility to God as we see in her image that she left imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma. Out of humility to God do we bow our head to Him and give in to His will for our lives? Mary’s fidelity did not allow clutter to inhibit God acting in her and through her. Rather, Mary’s fidelity and humility allowed her to be “full of grace,” the highly favored daughter of God. May we constantly advance toward God, closer and closer, with the help of Mary’s prayers, so that He may take flesh in us, and may we, like Mary bring Him to the world this Christmas. Mary our Blessed Mother help us to always say “Yes” to Jesus. Happy Advent,

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Este segundo domingo de Adviento se encuentra en medio de dos celebraciones Marianas, la Immaculada Concepción de la

Santísima Virgen María, el 8 de diciembre y nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, el 12 de diciembre. Qué apropiado que estos dos días de fiesta caigan dentro de los primeros días de Adviento. La Inmaculada Concepción de María en el vientre de su madre Ann es el comienzo del cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios de que la "Virgen estará con niño". Como oímos en la lectura del libro de Génesis el viernes pasado, "pondré enemistad entre tú y la mujer, y entre tu descendencia y la de ella; él va a golpear a su cabeza mientras usted golpea a su talón.” María da luz a su descendencia, Jesús, que aplastará la cabeza de la serpiente. El ángel Gabriel trae el cumplimiento de la promesa con su anuncio a María de que ella concebirá un niño y su nombre será Jesús, que significa "Dios salva". Dios eligió permitir que el "sí" de la Virgen María fuera el momento decisivo de la salvación. Este martes, celebramos la aparición de la Santísima Virgen María a Juan Diego. En una época de paganismo y de la cultura de la muerte, Dios, una vez más, escogió a la Virgen con el niño para ser un momento de salvación para México, y toda Latinoamérica y hasta las islas Filipinas. María apareció a Juan Diego embarazada. Cuando María visitó a su prima Isabel estaba embarazada de Jesús y Isabel dijo: "¿quién soy yo para que la madre de mi Señor me visita ?". ¿a quién trae la Santísima Madre, sino a Jesús? María es una imagen de "esperanza". Como el "sí" de María permitió que se hiciera espacio para Jesús, así que nosotros también decimos "sí" a la palabra de Dios y permitimos que se haga carne en nosotros. Cuando decimos sí a Dios, traemos a Jesús con nosotros. Como la cabeza de María se inclina en la humildad a Dios como vemos en su imagen que dejó impresa en el tilma de Juan Diego. De humilidad a Dios ¿inclinamos nuestra cabeza hacia él y nos rendimos a su voluntad por nuestras vidas? La fidelidad de María no permitía que el desorden inhibiera a Dios actuando en ella y a través de ella. Más bien, la fidelidad y la humildad de María le permitieron estar "llena de gracia", la hija muy favorecida de Dios. Que constantemente avancemos hacia Dios, cada vez más cerca, con la ayuda de las oraciones de María, para que él pueda tomar carne en nosotros, y que nosotros, como María lo traigamos al mundo esta Navidad. María nuestra Santísima Madre ayúdanos a siempre decir "sí" a Jesús. Feliz Advienimiento,
