from the Pastor
In “Going, Teach…” a Commentary on the Apostolic Exhorta on CATECHESI TRADENDAE of Pope John Paul II, the Holy Father invited us to consider that Mary, the mother of God, is also “Mother and model of catechists.” Mary is model because she collaborated in the forma on of Jesus and because she is the first of His disciples. Mary is mother of catechists because every person is entrusted to Mary according to his/her own charism and voca on. In the case of the catechist, the words of Jesus, “behold, your son” (JN 19:26) signify that Mary exercises her maternity also with regard to this disciple who has received the duty of following Christ and of announcing the Gospel.
In Mary we find the basic a tude of the catechist, which is that of poin ng out Christ as the goal: “Do whatever he tells you” (JN 2:5). And this is also the a tude of the Precursor (i.e., St. John the Bap st): “He must increase, but I must decrease” (JN 3:30).
It would be an error with unforeseeable consequences to make catechesis consist only in the teachings of a culture or of an ideology. Human ideas and culture are channels and means, but they are not the message of Jesus.
Catechesis must be centered in the very person of Jesus, son of God, and our brother, who died and rose, is present among us, and calls us to encounter and configura on with Himself through a process of conversion and of “Bap sm”.
Consequently, “the defini ve aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in in macy, with Jesus Christ.” To catechize also means to teach how to dialogue with God. Chris an truths, which are assimilated in the dialogue of prayer, remain rooted in the most profound of convic ons.
The interest of the catechist and evangelizer is not to form disciples who are enthusias c about an idea, but rather to form followers of Jesus, of his person and of His teaching, to the point that they truly live of Him, “in spirit and truth” (JN 4:32).
Let the simple, humble and unshakeable faith of Mary find a home in the hearts of Catechists. (From: “Going, Teach…” Commentary on the Apostolic Exhorta on CATECHESI TRADENDAE of John Paul II / pp.255-56, St. Paul Edi ons, ©1980.)
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Albert

Gospel Reading for Sunday, September 20 Ma hew 20:1-16A
Sick List Bob LeMay, Maurine Taylor and Keith Venard
Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. A er agreeing with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out about nine o’clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.’ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and around three o’clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o’clock, the landowner found others standing around, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They answered, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You too go into my vineyard.’ When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Summon the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and ending with the first.’ When those who had started about five o’clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat.’ He said to one of them in reply, ‘My friend, I am not chea ng you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
